  1. The Twins have more of a starting pitching situation than the Astros at this point. I think that the Twins first off-season priority should be to clean house at the Front Office and Dugout levels and then take it from there. My opinion is that they should go young. Also I really do not care about signing had beens like Cuddyer and Hunter. That would be Kubel and Bartlett and Mattie 2.0. I'd rather see kids at the OF and players like Arcia will not improve unless they play... Agree about staying away from FAs. Bigger fish to fry than corner OF and SP positions.
  2. Indeed. The issue is that his speed decline has been since ST. I would hate to see that it is due to an injury that went untreated. They are talking shoulder. Hopefully is just fatigue. It will be ok if they shut him down for the rest of the season. Don't need him right now
  3. Didn't see Parker's article. Could someone merge please? Thanks
  4. And it is not the blown saves that make him look more like Eddie than Joe lately... I think that this is the symptom. I am concerned about the 2 mph velocity drop in the fastball and the 1.5 mph velocity drop on the slider. When Perkins was hitting 96 and 97 he was an excellent closer. At 93 and 94, he is not that effective. I think that the Twins should have a long look this off-season and address this or at least try to figure out the root cause. Is it injury or decline due to age or mechanics or ?
  5. Whatever. Span declined every season he was with the Twins. "Held back" because Gomez, a much better player was deemed the starter over him at CF that one season? His play had decline from slightly above average to below average in his last season with the Twins. Hard to blame the Twins for that or for the multiple times he fell asleep on the bases and got picked off...
  6. I think that age of the pitcher when the deal was signed matters. And value is relative. Example: What was Don Baylor's or Steve Carlton's value for the '87 Twins? Objectively and without context: not much. Subjectively within that context: without those guys, the Twins would not had make the post-season. Thus, paying a tad for 10 games of Clemens vs a rookie as your 5th starter, might matter a lot. One of the issues I have with "value" (as in the dollar value in fangraphs based on WAR) is that real value depends on the return of the investment. e.g: If "overpaying" $5 million is what you gets you to the postseason and you make an extra $40 million because of that, I'd say it is pretty good investment. Context is really important. Also are results
  7. Schafer looks a lot like Clete Thomas to me, more speed, less power and one felony drug arrest more. My litmus test for players is whether or not they belong in a championship team. And if yes, in what kind of a role. Does Schafer belong in a championship team? Maybe as a bench player/ pinch runner? So does Danny Santana and I'd take Santana over him because of fielding versatility. Got to aim high sometimes...
  8. Dozier did not have much protection this season. He is quietly closing towards a 5 fWAR season. I'd love to see what he can do in a better team. Weekly ups and downs are immaterial...
  9. Welcome to the dark side
  10. Meyer and Nolasco could be better next season than Hughes was this season. The Twins' problem now is that they have too many pitchers under contract for 2015. I see it hard to get another free agent pitcher unless they trade Pelfrey and I really see no takers. He might actually return and be pretty good. May and Milone might lose in this scenario... Meyer Nolasco Hughes Gibson Pelfrey could be a pretty nice rotation. I think that performance is partially a matter of the pitching coach and this will (hopefully) change soon.
  11. Pretty biased poll up there My vote was for "other": Escobar SS, Hicks CF...
  12. If I were to point fingers for the contraction, I would first point them to Pohlad and his employees who followed his direction and did not care about the product on the field, including Mr Ryan, before I point fingers at Selig. And I don't care about Seilig. At. All. But you cannot talk about contraction and think that Ryan was innocent.
  13. But made the late 80s and early 90s great.
  14. One of those does not belong in the list. Because it happened when the ball was in play and was really not an assault by any means.
  15. Brawls are silly. But they are staged. And I suspect that more players and coaches got seriously hurt in home plate celebrations (including a former Twin), dirty slides and honest collisions (including several former Twins in friendly fire) than brawls. I'd rather have a manager who seems to care about winning and is fighting to win and even use a fistfight as an allegorical didactic tool ( ) instead of one who does not care. Minnesota Nice can take you so far; if your opponents are breaking your starting second basement's leg, you do not have to give them parting gifts during their exuberant retirement ceremonies. It is a matter of caring about winning. These days baseball is more of an "experience" (See: 3D movies etc) than a competitive sport for most of the fans. Sorry. I don't like that. I want my team to win. And I want the umpires and the other team to play a fair and not dirty ball. And kudos to people who are still like that and fighting for that (like Dougie. They care too, or at least show their players that they care and teach them by example to care. Instead of the others who care about post-game meals and paychecks.)
  16. Lots and lots of examples about that, especially if the new manager lights a fire under the players, establishes a culture of winning, treats everyone the same and does not accept lack of effort. Look at what difference Sam Mele made in the same team over Cookie Lagavetto, for example. Or Billy Martin over Cal Elmer, or Tom Kelly over Ray Miller. You don't have to go very far...
  17. Good insight. A couple of food for thought rhetorical questions: a. How many of those teams still exist? b. What was the prescribed fate of the one that does then, if the owner had his way? I hope that this puts the current 96+ 3+ season Loss steak in perspective
  18. Agree 100%. But the whole organization begins with St. Peter who was defending the Twins' performance mentioning the (weak) division wins of the 00s (but not the one and outs) as positives. Everyone has to go.
  19. I suspect that even one might not really care about their boss, if asked in public and on the record they will say how wonderful he/she is. Simple.
  20. Interestingly enough I agree with about 95% of this. The only disagreement is that Ryan will be gone before he will be able to fire Andy
  21. I think that at this point the question should be "who should stay" instead of "who should go" (Sorry Clash). And why that person should stay. And this should be not only for the coaches and manager but for everyone in the front office (including St. Peter) as well. Also, I think that the "four 90+ loss" seasons is a bit misleading. It is actually a three 96+ loss seasons and one TBD. The Twins did a full 21 games worse than 90 loss seasons, the past 3 seasons.
  22. Nah. Math is: $20 for a ticket plus $15 for parking, if someone is after cheap beer, better go buy a keg. Less traffic.
  23. Half of the pitcher roster looks like a rehab assignment. Guess too early for Corey Williams to be included.
  24. And out for the E-town post season. Cannot even make it up...
  25. Here is the thing: Cannot have it all. For a team that has lost 99 + 96 + 96 + 9? something must be broken. Cannot blame it on "luck", the spruces or whatever. Either the players, or the front office or the manager and his coaches. I think that is the reason of the particular reaction to the original article. Most of the Twins' fans are convinced that Gardenhire and Ryan are not part of the problem. So it has to be the players (but the players go hand in hand with the GM who brought them on, which in another long discussion.)
