  1. Nah Nothing to do with physical make up (other than the fact that tall guys are slow bloomers - ask Randy Johnson, if you don't believe me.) pure nastiness. Meyer is nasty. And he got the change-up working last season. That is scary by itself. Add a plus slow curve and this is more than Johan had to work with when he made it to the show (for real - not the first time)
  2. Lots of high school first rounders start at E-town (e.g.) T. Harrison: .301/.383/.461 Plouffe: .283/.340/.380 Span: .271/.355/.319 Mauer: .400/.492/.491 And I suspect having a dad and a brother in the game (as in Gordon's case,) might be more beneficial than playing streetball in DR and VZ...
  3. There definitely was more hype about Stewart and he apparently did not buy on that. Here is a good comparison with Gordon (who I don't think is even the Twins' best SS prospect) This season in E-town as an 18 year old he hit .294/.333/.366. As an 18 year old in E-town, Jorge Polanco hit .318/.388/.514. For completeness' sake Sano was 18 in E-town also and hit .292/.352/.637, Rosario was 19 and hit .337/.397/.670, D. Santana, 19: .264/.285/.421, Buxton, 18: .286/.368/.429, Vargas, 20: .322/.377/.489, Goodrum, 19: .275/.352/.382, Arcia, 19: .375/.424/.672. (Not many other recent high drafted high school kids to compare.) So Gordon looks a lot like Goodrum for some reason, and in that list, these are the two who do not belong to the group (Santana, of course, but that is another story.)
  4. What Sickels might not realize is that Meyer was coming back from shoulder issues and in 2014 he pitched about double the innings he ever pitched in a single season. I saw him dominate earlier in 2014. He was practically unhittable in innings 1-4 and on the beginning of the season. Then he got tired, thus the mechanic issues and the "inconsistency". That reliever talk is baloney I am working on my list and have contemplated on ranking him higher than Buxton (who has all the potential, so does Meyer, but has been much more inconsistent than Meyer) to tell you the truth.
  5. Polanco and Minier too low, Gordon too high IMNSHO The other weird thing: He projects Meyer as a number 2 starter and then ranks him lower than Berrios whom he projects as a number 3 starter...
  6. Not all ailments are equal. If someone can worsen his condition by playing instead of resting for a day or two, and, thus, missing more time he should not play. If he cannot worsen his condition, but just a discomfort (like flu-like symptoms) he should play. The biggest issue is how the Twins are handling the DL. I hope that Molitor handles that different than Gardenhire and I hope that he does not carry 3 catchers and 13 pitchers. It is a combination problem.
  7. To answer the question "how much has Molitor helped", you got to look at the bottom line between 2013 and 2014: Plus 4 wins. I got to argue that Hughes probably deserves at least one of those. So 3. Divided between Molitor and Brunansky. That's about 1.5 wins a piece, unless Gardy and Andy & pals cost the team 10 more than they cost in 2013. Just does not add up at the end....
  8. They got to go with D there and Escobar's is better than Santana's. I suspect that when pitchers adjust, Escobar's bat will be better than Santana's as well. The issue with Escobar as utility is that he cannot play third all that well (despite Gardenhire playing him there.) Given that either Nunez and/or Plouffe (depending on where Sano is starting the season) will be one or two utility guys, I'd say: think outside the box, sell high and trade Santana. And not only because of Escobar. If "the arrival of Buxton is imminent", Polanco, who is the same age as Buxton, and has performed better than Buxton at the same (and higher) levels should be there before Buxton, at least as soon as 2016, if not at 2015, and he will be the Twins' starting SS.
  9. I think that you are mixing the Kelly/MacPhail era (of the 2 World Championships) with the Kelly/Ryan era of the bottoming out and contraction... The Kelly/Ryan era was an era of suckiness, not of success...
  10. The Twins should had offered Maddon the top job in the organization, like LaRussa has in AZ, have St. Peter report to him and deal with the stuff he deals, and have Maddon bring in his own front office and manager etc. If he wanted to manage on top, let it be. They blew it...
  11. I think that addition by subtraction (Gardy, Andy, Scotty, Vavry, Steiny) is a huge thing. A new good pitching coach would be like having a new rotation and someone who understands platooning, will help...
  12. Nope. I remember TK as a mega curmageon who really disliked rookies and young players later in the day. He is fine where he is. This organization needs new blood, hopefully from outside.
  13. This is good stuff, because it comes from minor leaguers and from people outside the organization. But. I'd love to hear what they had to say about Gardenhire in the same sentence, to see how much validity to give to those opinions.
  14. I would have no issues with the Twins getting CarGo, if the package started with Nolasco and Pelfrey.
  15. The first season they wore those pinstripes was '87. But it is time. Bring back the alternate red.
  16. Bobby Cuellar does not? Pedro, Johan and the Big Unit... (and that is about 2 HOF careers...)
  17. Here is the full list of Free Agents who were offered Qualifying Offers: Max Scherzer (Tigers) Victor Martinez (Tigers) David Robertson (Yankees) Melky Cabrera (Blue Jays) James Shields (Royals) Hanley Ramirez (Dodgers) Pablo Sandoval (Giants) Nelson Cruz (Orioles) Russell Martin (Pirates) Francisco Liriano (Pirates) Michael Cuddyer (Rockies) Ervin Santana (Braves)
  18. Pat Neshek is a free agent and GardyNAndy are gone, so... The bullpen was a week point for the Twins. I am not convinced that Perkins could and should be the closer. He looks a lot like Yesterday Eddie, who would had been a set up guy (at best) in a championship team. Fien and Thielbar are AAAA guys. Would not mind if the Twins take a chance with Pelfrey as a late inning reliever if healthy. But this pen does need lots of work... (and 85 mph Milone 'fast'balls won't cut it.)
  19. I think that Vavry, Steiny and Scottie were part of the problem as well and will be terribly disappointed if they return. Bruno and Cuellar are enough of outsiders that I would not mind. But cannot be sacred cows (players or coaches or FO people) after 99+96+96+92. If nobody is part of the problem, you will have the same problem. And most of them (in all 3 categories mentioned) are part of the problem.
  20. Cuddyer will be 36 next season. For comparison's purpose, Mauer's contract runs through his age 35 season. He would be nuts not to accept that $15.3M Liriano as well. He is young enough that he can go out there and have a great season (he did not have on in 2014) and then shoot for a multi-year contract.
  21. Santana with a qualifying offer now, is not realistic...
  22. Looks like teams are handing out qualifying offers left and right for $15.3 M. Including to former Twins Liriano and Cuddyer. If this continues, I suspect that a lot of players will accept those offers and the market will go crazy.
  23. Mike Marshal is 72 years old...
  24. Yasmani Tomas & Pat Neshek
  25. Indeed. And see whether the Dodgers would like Nolasco to be there, as much as he does...
