  1. Rule of thumb: See who good pitchers credit as a mentor and as a helper. Or, in other words, if you have the guy who taught Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson and Johan Santana their out pitches (and they all credit him loudly for it) sitting in the bullpen, you suck.
  2. Prospects? He is over Rookie eligibility for next year Does not count.
  3. if any moderators are here, could you please venture over to the "communal pictures" post. Danke
  4. Macphail got a better job as a President/CEO for the Cubs in September of 1994, and I suspect that there were discussions about the Twins matching that, but did not happen. Macphail led the Twins to 2 World Championships. '94 was a lost season because everyone knew that it was a strike year mid-season and there were no adjustments at the deadline. Ryan did nothing. zip. zero. other than cutting payroll. The 94 team was a .500 team with bad pitching. Get a couple of decent free agents, replace Hrbek with someone else than 22 year old Stahoviak, bring back Shane Mack, get a DH bat to replace Winfield at DH and ... Nope. Ryan could not do that.
  5. About Gilmartin and the 40-man: Who would you rather have? Darnell or Gilmartin (because with Sano & co who really have to be added to the roster) not both of them fit, plus they are the same guy as Milone (who is arbitration eligible.) Goodrum started the season well and it was hopeful, but ended up another disappointment. Matter of fact, he had his worst full pro season with a .672 OPS. He is a year younger than Levi Micheal and Michael had a .776 OPS in the same and higher level as a second baseman vs as a third baseman. They should be flipped at least. When Goodrum was a light hitting shortstop it was ok, but his performance as a third baseman makes him expandable IMHO. Too bad, but...
  6. while Matt Garza had a combined 1.99 ERA and a 0.807 WHIP in high A, AA and AAA that season and was not chosen to replace the injured Liriano for some reason who was actually pitching games while injured. The starting was there. Ryan, Gardenhire and Anderson just did not know how to get it. Plus, the bats scored 2, 2, and 3 runs. And Bonser was ahead when he left the game. No excuses.
  7. I am convinced that the Twins cannot win a world series with this manager and coaches (they had enough post-seasons to prove it) and this general manager and front office (they had about 20 years to prove it.) Unless that changes, 2002-10 is probably what that bunch can do regardless the talent. Hard to think that a team with 2 aces (including the Cy Young award winner) two co-MVPs (one winning it actually), Cuddyer and Hunter on their primes, the best bullpen in the game anchored by the best closer in the game (Nathan's 2006 was his best season arguably) that won 96 (and then when belly up in the post-season) could be bettered any time soon in talent.
  8. Ryan led the Twins in how many World Series? Agreed. He is doing now what he has done before when he destroyed the championship team that Macphail build, and engineered the team to be contracted. Look at what the Red Sox did in 2013, the Orioles in 2012, the Rays in 2008, the Tigers in 2006 and 2009, the Royals in 2013, the Angels in 2014 and in 2004, the Mariners in 2014 and 2009, the Rangers in 2009, the Braves in 2009, the Pirates in 2013, the Brewers in 2011, the Reds in 2010, the Cubs in 2007, the Marlins in 2008, the Dodgers in 2006, the Diamondbacks in 2011, the Astros in 2008, the Rockies in 2009, the Padres in 2010, the Giants in 2014 and 2009. And that is in the last 10 years or so. And I can probably add Toronto & Cleveland to the list with less spectacular comebacks, but definite comeback. The list includes pretty much every team other than the ones that had sustained success like the Yankees, Rangers and Cardinals, and the Twins. No. This is not how every team does it. Most teams and their fans care about winning. The last thing that the people who are ru(i)nning the Twins need is more excuses and time to continue doing what they have been doing.
  9. Ryan signed Morales, instead of promoting Vargas, and Gardy was playing 2 DHs at the corner OF positions and SSs at CF.
  10. Those are symptoms of the big problem... I could say that some other symptoms are: Kubel, Willingham, Correia, Fuld, Morales, Pelfrey, Burton, Anderson, Vavra, Florimon, Gardenhire (add them on) And I do not think that anyone could have expected Buxton to be ready (even if healthy) for the bigs this season.
  11. I have to see what they do this off-season (i.e. if they will hold people accountable for 99+96+96+91+,) see how the team feels in Spring Training and then I would form an opinion about 2015. But I know one thing: Every single Twins official or player who says something close to that they did better this year, it was a better season and the like, should be fired/cut/traded/tarred/feathered...
  12. I think that they get castigated because those fastballs barely hit 88 (see: Wimmers, Alex) and not because of their sink.
  13. There is more that what meets the eye here, I suspect. And Gary Lucas has been one of the most soft spoken (yes he is if you do not know that) Twins' coaches. And pretty darn effective. And pretty darn caring both about his kids and the organization. Had a talk with him last ST about Hughes. He was adamant that he was "our" (and he said that) "number 2 starter". Gee
  14. Yeah. But his boss was Bell who was also Ryan's boss.
  15. I think that all 3 of the people pictured should go. Unless Pohlad cares, he should sell to someone who cares, and if he cares he should fire his president and start over with a baseball person who can build a winning culture. Jerry Bell (who was hired before the '87 season, btw) retired before the 2011 season and St. Peter took over. I think that this and the Twins' record afterwards are not coincidental but consequential. The Strib writers can really go for the low hanging fruit, otherwise they will lose "privileges" with the club.
  16. Big Volquez fan. Matter of fact, last off-season, with a little analysis I did, I concluded that he would be a good match for the Twins. (Hughes is in the list, too) RE: the Twins having a couple pitchers like Liriano and Worley: They did. The pitching coach could not make it happen. The big elephant in the room might be not the pitchers themselves, but the coach...
  17. The foundation idea maybe makes sense. Giving him the bonus anyways it does not. Maybe they should give Swarzak the bonus on the games started next, he is pretty close. (Not that close, but I think that the point is made; "close" is up to interpretation...)
  18. I think that Mackey's article kinda misses the point, because it does not take the next logical step. Inability of field management to win and inability of the general management to both put a winning product on the field and hold the field management accountable for loosing is a symptom. That is not where the "Bad culture" starts. I think that the root cause of the problem is that on the top of the Twins' management structure, they have someone who is focused more on the "experience" than baseball. Clearly, winning baseball games has become a secondary consideration. I'd love to see a press conference from the Twins' president outlining what the Twins will do to win 90 again, instead of what are the next food and beer offerings at Target Field and who will be performing in the summer concert that will fill the ballpark ($) but will rip apart the outfield grass. The Twins got their new ballpark, the All Star game and all that jazz. About time they get a baseball man to run the show and focus every single person in the organization towards their core business: winning baseball games. Unless this happens, I seriously doubt that thing will change.
  19. I dislike the geography move as much as you (with Reading, Harrisburg and New Britain being so close I used to see them about 20x a season.) But I think that this is good for the Twins overall. Might have to do a few roadtrips down south the next few years (feel free to hitch )
  20. Care to compare with Perkins' and Nathan's line their last year as starters?
  21. That ERA was an argument in Pinto's favor. It is not a predictive stat. But it works to describe how effective the pitchers were in surrendering earned runs when each of the three catchers worked with them. Based on that, the pitching staff is as effective in avoiding opponents runs, when Pinto is catching as it is when Fryer is catching and just less than when Suzuki catching. (Small sample not withstanding) Add the fact that Pinto will improve with more reps, and is in the part of his career to improve, and I think that it is ridiculous that he is not catching meaningless games... (But big Pinto fan here, so my position should not be a surprise; like that on Gardenhire ) Lots of defensive matters (and opinions from certain pitchers and coaches) about the effectiveness of a catcher to call a game, but nothing as factual about how many runs does a pitching staff give up when someone is catching them.
  22. Pitcher ERA (Innings caught) Suzuki: 4.52 (973.7) Fryer: 4.81 (181.3) Pinto: 4.82 (200) OPS+ (PA) Suzuki: 107 (481) Pinto: 101 (181) Fryer: 66 (76)
  23. I think that the Twins should toy with the idea to try him as a reliever. I suspect that he would be a better late inning option than Tonkin or Fien (Burton is gone) and maybe Perkins when all is said and done.
  24. The Lookouts were the Twins' franchise first minor league affiliate back in 1930 when Griffith sent Engel (a Senators' Scout) to secure a franchise there. Some pretty interesting stories about what Engel (who became the team president) did for the locals during the depression, by pretty much turning the ballpark into a homeless shelter and serving free food. Lots of franchise history, they stopped being affiliated with the Senators when they moved to MN. Good to see that. That whole New Britain/Hartford stadium mess was not a good one. Will miss having a Twins AA franchise close to me, but it is good for the Twins.
