  1. Right players in the right spots. During the post-season. Lemme see: 2006. Phil Nevin (1) and Jason Tyner (2) as the DHs and Nick Punto (3) as the starting third baseman. Right players. 2006. Starting post-season rotation: Santana, Bonser and Radke's half shoulder. Riding pine: Silva, Baker and Garza. Traded mid season because he refused to throw Andy's two-seamer: Lohse. 2006: Game 1: Santana is cruizing after an unfortunate second inning, but hits 100 pitches. Crain in Oopsie Daisy, 2 hits. a homer.. Guess he was saving Santana's arm for something else, and Joe Nathan for the lead. Did not happen. 2006: Game 2: Tied game at 2. After 6. Bonser cruising with 87 pitches. Gardy brings in the pen. Neshek, senor Sweat, and Juan Rincon happen. 2-5 before Nathan closes the loss. 2006. Game 3: Must win. The aforementioned half shoulder Radke pitched instead of healthy Silva, Garza or Baker. Does admirable for about 2 innings then starts falling apart. Of course, Gardy keeps him in. Then he takes him out after 4. Crain and Reyes (who sucked a couple days previously in.) Sweep. Right players in the right spots, if you are the opposition. Would love him to manage against the Twins.
  2. I read this as replacing Pelfrey during the off-season vs. extending him phew
  3. Holding onto my horses, but Detroit would be on top of my list for GardyNAndy to ru(i)n... Maybe Chicago... Choices, choices, choices.
  4. The Metrodome. For obvious reasons. If you cared about watching a baseball game, and not about drinks with pizza in them and 'entertainment', it was a great park and a great home field advantage...
  5. No, did not happen. He preferred Hunter/Mauer over Vargas
  6. Thanks for using ERA and BS as stats.... Unfortunately, that's what Ryan is using
  7. Let's qualify that "one of best relievers". Here are some of Perkins' 1st half stats and their ranking among MLB relievers in parenthesis. Perkins 1st Half: 25.2% K% (56th), 2.32 FIP (16th) , 3.41 xFIP (51st), 0.83 WHIP (with .240 BABIP) (4th) Normalized for .290 BABIP (29th), This averages out as one of the 30-40 best or so relievers. Great for a set up position, but not a closer in a contender, which is where Perkins belongs. Plus he is going to be 33, and his fastball and slider are 2-3 mph off their peak and getting hitable. Definitely an improvement over O'Rourke, but that should be his job.
  8. Even though his FIP got a bit better this season as mainly a swing man, he still is a pretty mediocre pitcher who cannot strikeout anyone out. Think Swarzak. I consider this a bullet that the Twins have dodged. If he was not from MN this discussion would not be had. About time the Twins think of themselves as a contender and not as a landing spot for mediocre Minnesotans. That's what the Saints are for. BTW, a couple inaccuracies about the 2008 draft: a. Ryan was not around then. b. the Twins picked 3 (Hicks, Gutierrez, Hunt) before Hand was picked by the Marlins. Regardless, the Twins have bigger issues to solve than who the mop up pitcher would be in 2016. They have plenty of AAA pitchers, including Duffey, who will be fine in that role.
  9. Why exactly did Nolasco "stink"? He led all Twins' starters in FIP (and winning percentage if one prefers Blylevenian metrics... )
  10. When you have a chance to win a post-season spot, you have the best players in the organization in the majors and you worry about 40-man rosters when you have to worry about them... Everything else is smoke and mirrors and lies and excuses, unless he is that incompetent...
  11. I don't see Santana getting called up if Polanco and Arcia are not and I cannot see Tonkin getting called up if Meyer is not. Same with Fryer and Pinto....
  12. Wonder how many people would had say 'no' to this trade if it were "Danny Santana" instead of "Berrios" after last season? How many of those people would say "no" to that today? Got to sell high. Buxton is such a case. If the Twins can get a couple of good arms or a catcher and a front line pitcher, they should do it. Not Berrios though. They are hurting.
  13. Depends. I'd say keep him over Hunter for a DH/1B/cOF role. But I'd rather see what Kepler does in that role. So, yes, trade him. Unless they are planning on re-signing Hunter; Plouffe will be better than that.
  14. I think that something is going on here. In July he was Rochester's hottest hitter (.261/.352/.576) and come August the wheels fell off...
  15. As much as they are chasing Toronto... They are both division leaders and the Twins are 5+ games behind each. TX and CA are +/= one game...
  16. Ryan next. Hopefully.
  17. a. That's not game 163 and b. There are bigger fish to fry before the Twins get in the Wild Card game in the post-season than that
  18. Must have hit the lower (but further) ring. Ground rules say those are HRs.
  19. HRs and RBIs (and .312 OBP) I refuse... I'd rather vote for the best player in that team, Kepler...
  20. That would be Sano but they should not trade him.
  21. Is "already been yourself before" that much different that "already been"? (I see the "yourself" as repetitive in that phrase. Same with "before", "already" implies that) Gee
  22. No worries. His BABIP in the minors has been at around .400 plus in three different occasions. Might decline a bit down to .380 or so (which is pretty close his MiLB average,) but if he hits 40-50 balls out of there (not in play,) it will not matter at all. For power hitters with decent BB% (and K%) BABIP is borderline irrelevant. Santana is a different story. Last season his BABIP was much higher than his career (low .300s) and he does depend on a high BABIP to get on base because he does not walk much, so the writing was on the wall for him... Buxton btw, is the same kind of player as Santana, as far as BABIP dependencies; his .364 in the majors is bit higher than his career average, but has not translated into result. This is sure-fire indicator that he is not ready. And the eye test shows it too...
  23. Agree with this. And if they do matter in the regular season (that they do,) they matter twice as much in the post-season. I would seriously like to see both May and Hughes (check his record as a reliever) in the pen in 2016 and push 33 year old then Perkins to the LH set up spot. This trio is not as good as the Reds' bad boys, might be approaching it. You got to look at context: a. The Twins do not have an Ace in their MLB staff, and their best starter(s) are decent number 3s in competitive teams b. There is one guy in the organization with Ace potential and he has had a terrible 2015 c. There is one guy with number 2 or so potential in the organization and he has had a very good 2015 d. The 2016 free agent SP class is stoked: David Price, Johnny Cueto, Ryan Zimmerman, Zack Greinke, Jeff Samardzija, Scott Kazmir are solid number one number 2 types and they are yound. Then you got Lincecum, Latos and Leake who are likely better than what you have today and 2 of them have been aces. It is silly for the Twins not to go after one or two in that list. Have Santana as the long man in the pen and send Nolasco to CA, for all I care...
  24. If that were true, this millennium the Twins should had: Gone to the ALDS 4 times, to the WC twice and won a WC once Not. Even. Close. Regardless of what a GM plans in the beginning of the season, if you see your team contending in July and August, you should: a. have the best 25 up at all times and b. try to improve your team. If you always look at your future, your present will become your past... Ryan on the other hand... I think that the series with the Rangers and Angels are equally important (or even more, because the Twins are not chasing the Astros.) If the Twins beat those teams, win or sweep the home series and don't get swept on the road, they are in...
  25. Nah. That's "already seen". Deja vous is french colloquialism for "already been"
