  1. I'm considering ending this conversation because it's difficult on a phone, but this is a teaching opportunity. I want you to slow your roll for a second. Ground balls are not most likely turned into outs, ground balls go for hits very often. In fact, i believe they are second to line drives. The worst type of contact is infield fly balls. They are converted almost every time. And of fly balls are next. Most pitchers only have minimal impact on babip, same with most hitters. A .350 babip is high, unsustainable high. It will drop to normal, and his era will drop with it. This is the basis for pitcher independent earned runs, which says he has been very good. Now, you are citing historical data for him. That 45 ip in 2014 isn't very convincing, especially considering it was his first in the mlb. The walk rate is the only outlier if you factor his minor league career. But, he is young and control can be improved with development. I doubt he'll continue to walk under 2 per 9, but he has done it for over 80 innings so far.
  2. Sooooo you're saying not to trust he can keep limiting walks (completely in his control, and something he's been excellent at), keep striking people out (which he also has control over, and also been excellent). Yet, continue to bank on hitters maintaining an extremely high babip? That makes sense *sarcasm*. These magical peripherals you speak of were created to predict future performance. They are used throughout mlb, and extensively by some very successful clubs. What do you propose we trust to predict future performance?
  3. If like to see some advanced metrics for Stewart. Despite a high amount of hours given up, he has only allowed 1 hr this season. Seems to be a trend for him, not allowing hr. His last 4 outings have been pretty good. He is still walking too many guys. I really hope things click for him to end the year. If he even continues to do what he's already done i bet he still starts in aa next season. If he struggles or misses time due to injury he repeats.
  4. I agree John. I'm just skeptical about the make up of this team being able to compete down the stretch. With a win total in the mid 80s, they will be playing meaningful games regardless. This will be a fun summer no matter what the end results are.
  5. I really hate or education system.... Can we talk about zombies again?
  6. 86 wins. No playoffs. La, Houston, Baltimore, nyy, kc will all win more games. This still isn't a playoff team. Hughes is having a pumpkin year, it's only a matter of time for pelfrey/milone, Santana hasn't pitched all year and will be rusty, bullpen is a joke, lack of production is key positions. Again, this isn't a playoff team. They are a winning team, which is a nice change.
  7. That screams trade to me. If they send him down he had to stay down for a number of days. Not worth it. He is one of the better pitchers on the staff. Do not want to get in a situation where you agreed on a trade but he can't be put into the rotation. If not trade.... please be a trade.... he bring talent to the bp, which needs it desperately. I'm in favor of that too.
  8. As far as pitchers have gone he can't be very high on the list. I think he's done ok with position players though, for the most part.
  9. Seth, is max murphy the new Eric lis? Seems to hit well but isn't really on national radar.
  10. Well done on the article Shane.
  11. I was kinda serious, but I'll willingly take credit for the win. You're welcome JR. Badsmerf WAR-1
  12. Hu and Meyer top high. If put thorpe ahead of them both. Meyer is dropping like a rock in my mind. I wasn't impressed in the futures game last year and continue to be underwhelmed. I'd also put Stewart behind Jay. Gonsalves and Rogers have had nice seasons, but Stewart still has the pedigree. While the strike outs haven't been there he is still getting weak contact and most likely refining his approach. I'm a believer in him still.... For now at least.
  13. Couldn't be happier about this. I saw this a long time ago and truly believe the Obama administration deserve a pay on the back. If it wasn't for obamacare, I'd be pretty happy about his terms in office.
  14. Holy **** i missed a debate about whether or not zombies are considered alive! Missed the boat there boys and girls. Was too busy watching third eye blind at the cabooze and the going up near the Canadian border. I'm not reading through the rest of the thread until now... Right now at least. Some food for thought. Today the Confederate flag was taken down in south Carolina. First off, how has that piece of **** been flying on government property this long? Secondly, on npr this morning i heard some disturbing statistics. 48% of the population doesn't think the civil war was about slavery. Even worse, 60% of the youth in the south don't think it was about slavery. Texas treats Davis and Lincoln as moral equivalents in their text books. Should we still give educational power to the states? Last state ranking i saw the other day put Minnesota 6th in the country. Just sayin.
  15. Why does it matter if he's a Christian? I'm not, but go to church with my wife at least twice a month. My morals agree with living that life and making good choices. Being a Christian doesn't stop someone from making bad choices, we have to do that all on our own. I really find it revolting that the Republican party has taken on this ultra Christian identity.
  16. Should make you hesitate before going on another Gettysburg internet address does it? Least it should with what you've written in this thread so far. Just kidding. I enjoy discussing politics with you all.
  17. Leave it to a political thread to take me out of a posting hiatus. I don't care to post about baseball much anymore. The forum is bland and devoid of any snark outside of game threads. Pass. Politics, especially the current political political structure, is much more interesting. I'm very much on the same boat as Brock. I can't support a party that lies through their teeth and outwardly promotes self proclaimed superiority. I vote libertarian. I voted for a dead candidate in the Iowa Senate race instead of joni earnst because i detest her. Sure, my vote didn't make a difference in the outcome, but it still counted. Unfortunately, millions of people choose between two manufactured candidates instead of legitimate third party contenders. For some reason they are deemed inappropriate, insuperior, unelectable.. Ect. The climate is changing in the general populace. My generation doesn't identify either party. Picking between two evils has become the status quo, but at some point i believe the cracks will be exploited. We need big changes. The unrest in poverty stricken communities, the expanding gap in net worth, over populated prisons, humiliating foreign relationships, expanding national debt... Some issues have changed over the years, but the absolute lack of solutions hasn't. Later in life I'm hoping to get into politics, hopefully with an emerging party that starts solving problems instead of blaming them on someone.
  18. It depends a lot on how 2015 goes for Plouffe. If he can play at least as well as 2014 I doubt he is moving off 3b. Sano is going to spend a lot of time in the minors this season. When there is an injury he will likely come up, then go down again when the player comes back. He should be playing LF, RF, 1B along with 3B. It should be pretty obvious he isn't going to stay at 3B. He would already be considered a "bad" fielder, his increasing size is only going to make that worse. You're all kidding yourselves. At 21 he is 260, you really think by 25 he is going to even stay at 260? Especially when he's quoted as saying he eats whatever he wants? Come on! There is also another huge issue in this discussion: Mauer. The big contract, the lack of production, and the need to find a spot for Sano's bat. I'm not hating on Mauer, but he needs to be in jeopardy of losing 1B as much as Plouffe does. Again, 2015 will be important for him to prove he owns it. Whatever happens in the next few years, I highly doubt we'll be seeing Sano at 3b in 2020.
  19. I like the edge he, Rosario, and arcia all have. Should be fun.
  20. No, he really wasn't. Other than defense, but sure what measures you're using.... and Joe want even a stand out there.
  21. Halsey your hatred is baffling. I say no only because some things need to play out in 2015 before committing to Plouffe at 3b. Sure, you could move him or Sano to the of, but you'd be losing value. They could bring more in a trade. I'm not really worried about Plouffe into his 30's. His game isn't about speed, and that is what goes first. He has an athletic build and should retain bat speed and quickness. Let 2015 play out a little. He could start the season like 2014 and just keep hitting.
  22. Have any coaches during Gardy's tenure go on to have success in other organizations? Nobody jumps at me. That is telling, IMO. If you're a manager for a club that wins a bunch of division tittles and no other organization lures coaches away.... ain't good.
  23. This topic again? Twins are not going to trade Plouffe. There is no dumb GM that is going to throw a prospect good enough that Ryan pulls the trigger. Plouffe just doesn't have enough equity yet. By mid summer he might, or even next offseason. He was a 4 WAR player in 2014, which is pretty good. Ryan would be foolish to give him away for a marginal prospect. In contrast, Escobar was only a 1.1 WAR SS this season, despite a decent offensive season. He will be a downgrade from Plouffe, probably in every single way.
