  1. This analysis is curious. Rick Anderson is a huge 2 seam guy, to a fault in the past. He was routinely shoving it down the staff throats. I think that this 2 seam hard on the pirates have is successful because of their personnel. It's been great in the regular season and I'll be interested to watch how this "weak contact" works in the postseason. If anyone else remembers, this is almost exactly like what the twins had in the 2000's..... and we all know how well that staff did against good lineups.
  2. April? You do mean April of 2013 I hope. The CF situation is more than a problem, it has been a catastrophe.... one that likely won't be fixed with Terry Ryan running things until Buxton is up (granted, could be 2015). The Twins could very well drastically improve in 2015. New manager, new LF, and elite SP. That, will get this team moving in the right direction. I would rather bring in a guy like Span/Rasmus to play CF for a few months than focus on LF. I do like Hunter though, and really wouldn't mind a stint with him in LF to end his career.
  3. Half the coaches? Have those moves produced the desired results?
  4. The media brigade against the Twins continues.....
  5. Hughes is crazy to decline that much money. Seriously, 500,000 dollars for one out.... No way I'd decline that, no way any of you would either. It's not about greed, it's about 5 minutes making you a ton of money for a great season.
  6. Looks like he'll be starting the va-ca early! j/k, I hope he sticks around to support his team and young guys the rest of the season. He is going to be needed to take on a bigger veteran/leadership role in the next few years so I hope he's up for it. He put on 20 lbs of muscle in the offseason, so I hope he realizes how much that extra effort pays off and continues to improve this offseasn.
  7. Nice article. That is pretty much my opinion. It isn't a great statistic, but it tells you something about a pitcher. I don't think it should hold much weight for a Cy Young, but it is still going to be a consideration. Side note. I feel like Santana was often screwed out of Wins by Gardy. He would end the 7th or 8th at 100 pitches constantly and go on to lose or get a n.d. One of the other variables against w/l.
  8. That can't be true. The best pitchers in the league usually win the most games because they give their team a better chance to win the game. I believe there is a big difference between winning 20 games and winning 15. Plus, w/l percentage means something too. Now, a pitcher can't control run support, but they do control how often they go deep enough into games to get a decision. I think there is something to be said for starting pitchers that have good winning percentages. A bad pitcher won't win 2x more games than he losses, but a bad pitcher could be over .500. That is the problem, you have to have perspective with the stat. Looking at wins, Gibson and Cosart both have 13 wins, 11 losses and 10 losses respectively. Cosart has a few more strikeouts. Pretty similar pitchers. Gibson's ERA is 4.5, Cosart's is 3.7. Gibson did allow a few more hits, but walked less. Pretty similar pitchers, with the outling statistic being ERA.
  9. Wins are important. Pavano also had a very good team playing behind him that season. I once thought they were meaningless, but I do think they have value now. A pitcher had to pitch well enough to meet the qualification for a win, and that hasn't been too common for the twins in the last few years.
  10. I don't see how ownership can't see this happening. If it hasn't been apparent yet, by the opening day next year it will. They are not just losing attendance, they are losing fans. I've never felt more discouraged about this team since I started watching them. Nick, you point toward the talent coming up. How long until that talent is turned into wins? 2... 3... 4? When you lose 90+ games 4 years in a row, its pretty tough to envision being even .500.
  11. I get your point, but until Buxton comes up and graces us with his sparkling smile (assuming his smile is great); the OF defense just isn't going to be a plus. The Twins could just go out and sign 2 of Rasmus/Span/Hunter and that would bolster the defense by a large margin. Then you are almost guaranteeing Hicks gets shipped to AAA to start the year (where he belongs). There is less pressure on Buxton to develop quickly. Rosario is able to get back into a groove and hopefully play more 2b. I'm just not sure Terry Ryan would do that. I fear this break-out by Shaffer has him penciled into starting CF next season with a dumpster pick-up as a LF. That is what has happened in the past, so that is what I expect to happen. O yeah, and other terrible year for the OF.
  12. A single where a baserunner goes from 1st to 3rd happens a few times a game.... maybe. And, how often is a certain player even in that type of position? The statistic would be worthless based on lack of data alone. On the other hand, you can assume that a catcher might receive something like 150 pitches per game. There is hardly any defensive statistic that will impact a game more than pitch framing. Right now, Suzuki is costing the Twins pitchers 1.5 strikes per game. Now, that might not be much of a difference. But if you're costing that strike on a 2-1 count with runners on 2nd and 3rd.... yeah, thats going to be a big deal. And the fact he is having a negative effect every game compiles the significance.
  13. IMO, the Twins should get heat for not getting rid of Gardy, or some real attempt of a change in staff. You can't be this bad for this long and keep the same people that ****ed this thing up. I hate that all fans and Twins FO keeps spouting is their "top minor league system." Well prospects don't win MLB games. If you keep Gardy, what message are sending the fans? Since I don't have direct tv anymore, I might not even get to watch a single game next year.... and I'm not sure that I'll care. Coming from someone that used to watch 100 games every year, that, is how disgusted I am with management decisions.
  14. Do you really think that statistic is correct? Hunter could be 50 and play better defense than Willingham did this year. I don't think difference in defense from Hicks to Hunter would be that great either. I think Hicks is a terrible defender. Has the tools, takes bad jumps, bad routes, bad fundamentals. Plus, Hicks can't hit enough to be a GG SS. Rosario needs to start playing baseball in March to get any kind of chance at the MLB in 2015. There are no in-house options. People advocating for Rasmus need to see that he isn't going to sign some 2 year deal. He'll want 5 years at 50 million. Want to pay that? I think it would be great to have Hunter come in for a couple years at the end of his career. I'm not sure if he would go for it, but he has had much better longevity than I ever expected.
  15. Determining rookie status: A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or ( accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list). I don't think either will be considered rookies next season. May has 39.2 IP, but has been on the roster for more than 45 days. Vargas already has 212 ABs. I take that back about May. 25 player limit, to me, means outside of September. So unless he hits 50 IP, he will be a rookie next season.
  16. Wow you are low on Jorge. 42? A huge fall IMO. Jorge did have a terrible year in CR, but he still has stuff and projectability. I don't think he is a top 20 guy with what he showed this year, but that is just too low.
  17. We don't want to ruin his confidence with a snark gone wrong. Maybe next year after some consistent snarking he can come up and contribute to the snark at the mlb level.
  18. While his defense is slipping, he still has a .772 OPS. I'd take that all day. Plus, his power will play up in TF.
  19. I looked through his defensive stats too. He is obviously not the same fielder he used to be. Seems like he's been bad since getting to DET. I have to wonder if that is a complete coincidence. Either way, I'm sure he'd be upgrade to what the Twins have been seeing out there.
  20. I'm sending you to the minor league board to sharpen your skills.
  21. To me, that isn't the point about listening to fans. You don't sign a SP because the fans want a guy, you sign a SP because your staff ERA is last in the MLB. You don't upgrade your OF because the fans don't like Aaron Hicks, you upgrade your OF because it is the worst OF defense in the MLB. It doesn't take a baseball genius to attempt to fix obvious flaws. Fans want to watch a good team. If the GM can't put a good team on the field he doesn't deserve to be there. If a manager can't win with what the GM thought was a good team he doesn't deserve to be there. Fans, want to see results one way or another.
  22. Seth, at some point you have to make a change to get different results. It isn't a guarantee a new GM will bring a WS tittle to the Braves, but they weren't getting one with the incumbent so there isn't as much risk as you are implying. At this point with the Twins, they really couldn't get much worse if they made a change.
  23. Jamie, you share a lot of the same sentiments I do. However, I do believe Gardy would be a fine manager in a different situation. A place with a lot of veterans like NY or LA would be a great place for him.
  24. How much does that matter? Speed isn't the end all be all (and I'm sure he is still pretty fast). His instincts are what made him great, and those don't just go away. Again, I'd like evidence to support that claim.
  25. Can the "terrible" defensive stats be given for the argument against Hunter? I have a hard time believing Hunter went from the best OF in the league to "terrible." He isn't elite anymore, but I don't believe he's as bad as everyone is making him out to be.
