  1. We've had the Ace pitcher discussion already. The Twins love affair with toolsy HS OF has put them out of the potential to draft an Ace. Garza was the last draftee that had that potential. He has yet to grow up and overcome the mental part of the game, but the talent is still there. You don't always have to be at the top of the draft to get an Ace, it certainly helps, but you pretty much HAVE to draft them in the 1st round, especially in the last 10 years. This is why I am against the Twins drafting a position player so much this season. To get top of the rotation talent, you have to draft them in the 1st.
  2. Nice assumption, doesn't always work that way. I just wish Benson would have played a little better. Then the Twins would at least have another option. Before cutting bait with him, I would have at least given him a shot with the Twins to give him that change of scenery in-house. So much of professional sports is mental, and it was obvious he was beat. Unfortunately, the Twins really have no option right now. I'm on the Clete Thomas bandwagon right now (and there is plenty of room lol). Not that I think Clete will be a world beater, but he would probably play better than Hicks right now and allow Hicks to get a little time in AAA to find himself. I doubt it will happen. The Twins can spout the BS about Hicks not letting the game get to him, but I just don't buy it. Any competitor is going to be frustrated after failing so badly. If he isn't frustrated, that isn't a very good sign either. You don't just kick the dirt and say dang-it after hitting .150 for 2 months.
  3. I'm joking. Whoosa John.
  4. Thats a good question. I think you could ask it to 10 scouts and the only thing in common would be stuff lol. Smooth deliveries are a big part of it. Too much effort in a delivery fatigues an arm quickly, thus effectiveness drops off. Other than that, just effectiveness. Many relievers are simply failed starters. There are obviously examples to the contrary, but you don't know until you try.
  5. Yikes. Tough first start for Baxendale. Plus, another error for Santana... that makes 18! Vargas is closing in on Sano with his 10th HR. He is starting to really hit. Not counting tonight's game, he has a 1.000 OPS for May. Really nice.
  6. Meh. I don't mind it. For the most part I get his sense of humor. His baseball terms and things like that can get old, but they are at least tolerable since he seems to know most of what he talks about.
  7. I'm not very confident in that defense at NB. I'm not saying he would come up and a better defense would automatically make him awesome, just that I think it has made a difference in some of his starts. When they get into August I hope the Twins have had enough of the retreads, Meyer has pitched well, and we get to see him for a few months. That, and Harden coming back healthy would make my season. Ending the year with Gibson, Meyer, Diamond, Worley and Harden would be perfect.
  8. 10 years too many if you ask me....
  9. I really like Bert. Not sure what you people don't like about him. He is awesome. Plus, he throws out random things about fighting and hitting guys on purpose.
  10. I'm in agreement on Florimon. He's looked much better at the plate and in the field. I view him as the type of player we had all hoped Casilla would be. I see him as having a little more pop with less contact and patience. I'm fine with him at SS for awhile too. Plus, he still has room to keep improving. Danny Santana has started hitting a little bit in AA, but for 2013 and probably 2014 Florimon will have an everyday spot.
  11. Season. Over. *was working today and missed the opportunity this morning
  12. I would have to go with 38 year old Kenny Rogers.
  13. He's having a great year. Regardless if he fits into the future with the Twins, I'm 100% confident he would out-play Hicks right now (not really that hard). Give Hicks some needed time in AAA and come back up when he's turned things around. Also, you want to give starts to AAAA journeymen Deduno and Walters over Gibson yet letting Thomas have a cup of coffee while a struggling rookie gets demoted is crazy? You make no sense. The inconsistencies in approaches has been a huge factor in being one of the worst teams in baseball for 3 years now. If you have a mantra, you shouldn't pick and choose when to implement it.
  14. Sorry to everyone for continuing to beat this down. What exactly will more AAA starts teach Gibson at this point? He would have been up with the Twins 2 years ago had he not gotten injured, and the idea was that the Twins needed to be sure he was physically ready. I'm pretty sure he's shown that he is. I was cautious at first too, but he was having command issue in his poor starts. Its been clear for over a week now he should be in the rotation.
  15. Wouldn't have much of a problem with this if they were consistent. Arcia is sent down when he starts struggling yet Hicks is allowed to be terrible for months? If they don't view Hicks as a piece for the future thats fine, I just feel like we deserve to see someone like Clete Thomas that might actually show some signs of life.
  16. Benson gets claimed off waivers today and Ramirez got flattened by Willingham. Not sure if he'll go on the DL, I just thought the irony is hilarious.
  17. There is nothing wrong with being a casual fan. If you stick around and read a little bit you can pick up a lot of knowledge pretty quickly. Thats how many of us learned more about the game. Also, many of us have been on internet forums for 10+ years now (some, the same message boards for that long). A lot of inside jokes and snark. Don't be afraid to post, state opinions ect., it only makes it easier to teach when someone's position is known. Have fun. Great site... meh, I'd call it good... lol.
  18. Bad decision. The Rangers baseball philosophy might really help Benson. Hard for me not to root for him just to spite the Twins. Every player like this makes me wonder if this is the result of the Twins trying to change him a la Ortiz or just unable to develop a la Restovich. I hope the best for Benson, and secretly hope this decision is another nail in Terry Ryan's coffin. As bad as that sounds, I just can't help it.
  19. I've been souring on Anderson for the last 5 years. It seems any pitcher with talent just can't get along with this guy. Slowey, Garza, Lohse, Liriano, and I think BOOF! even had some spats with him. I'm not sure Santana ever really cared what Anderson said because he was a Cy-Young winner and pretty much just dominated games. Kinda hard to screw that one up (unless he gets injured... whoops). I think its pretty clear Anderson's time here is over. If the organizational philosophy is changing to strike-outs, Anderson is not the guy for the job, and it is clear he doesn't know how to follow through with it.
  20. free slama!!!! FrEe SlAmA Take that stupid all-cap filter. Don't like reading all-caps? Try reading alternating caps!
  21. Here is the problem. Gibson needs innings in the MLB to adjust. These two getting 4 starts, are 4 starts they are taking away from Gibson's development. I believe it is a poor choice by management to do this since it is unlikely Gibson will be pitching an entire season anyway. I'm not arguing that these two can't put together an acceptable couple of starts, there is just no reason they should be the choice over Gibson right now other than saving a few million in arb. If the idea is to sink or swim with a last chance audition then whatever, I just don't believe now is the right time for that or that either has earned another "chance." How can guys like Walters and Deduno keep getting a "chance" when Slama has been shunned for 5 years (really, he's been in AAA with a >10 K/9 rate). ****ing irritating that they can't be consistent in their logic. If they don't feel Slama has the "stuff" when he has an extremely good K rate, how the hell do these two keep getting to tickle Gardy under the desk?
  22. Either of you, expand on this. There is absolutely no reason a catcher that can barely hit .200 should be on a 40 man roster, or wont pass through without being claimed. The logic behind keeping a catcher because he's a catcher is infuriating.
  23. Damn. Hermsen/De Vries or Butera.
  24. Flashed talent? Are you kidding me? Deduno turns 30 in a month and Walters is 28. These guys haven't stuck because they don't have the talent. Don't give me the BS about Deduno's WBC results. They've been in professional baseball for almost 10 years, the jury is out of them. Each passed through waivers without a team claiming them because they aren't worth a spot on any other 40-man roster. The Twins are idiots. Neither of these two fit into the future. They should be bottom of the barrel, last option guys, which is essentially what they are. I have no problem with them getting starts (like in 2012) when there is no other realistic option. When you have a guy like Gibson who is even borderline ready, unanimously thought to be called up at some point, has the talent to be a pretty good pitcher, and pass him up for these two? For what? Saving a few million by avoiding super-2 (which, by the way, isn't a concrete time like avoiding arb). I hope Terry Ryan is fired.
