  1. Josh Marshall gives a clear-eyed run down of the events, providing video links etc. I tend to agree with his conclusions, that both the Black Israelites and the MAGA kids were acting inappropriately.
  2. Didn't the Twins sign Parker to a similar deal, where if they cut bait sooner they take less of a haircut?
  3. You really covet Duffey and Granite do you? If he stinks, I doubt he makes the 25 man roster.
  4. Has the structure of the deal been announced? I imagine the Twins can get out it, ala Annibal Sanchez's contract last year, if things aren't working, but the longer they keep him the more they are on the hook for.
  5. The smugness of that MAGA kid glaring at the Native American veteran drumming makes my skin crawl. CNN article for context.
  6. Imagine if the pool of people negotiating was all of the Americans, do you think that kind of leverage would get us a better deal in terms of health costs?
  7. Thanks for sharing. Damning.
  8. I had seen the headlines about Wetteland but did not bother to look at the details. The details are disturbing. Years, family member, sexual abuse. Wetteland deserves due process, but nothing more than that. Our culture is shifting to the point where we will see a continual stream of these kind offenses coming forward. There is the specter of false accusation, but what we will find is that there will have been committed many sexual offenses by whom we thought to be the good guys. We should stop making excuses for such, and take a hard look at ourselves. Sometimes the friend that we believe is falsely accused is actually a person whom we should so obviously not empower.
  9. Schoenfield of ESPN would like to see Buxton traded to the Rockies for Gray.
  10. Seems somewhat relevant to this thread: Gillette's new ad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koPmuEyP3a0&feature=share
  11. Thanks for the correction, but my general point stands. That it is difficult for mid-markets to sustain a 200 million contract not working out.
  12. It's a caveat going forward--that the Twins will maintain a farmsystem well-enough going forward to push-off the need to augment through FA. I was unclear. The Mauer deal is just an example, demonstrating the downside of the risk. The downside is really, really big, and should not be poo-pooed. Contracts of this size rarely live up to their price. Even with Arod, didn't Texas have to eat cash to send him to NY?
  13. I think the 15 million is premised on that he gives up football. I'm under no illusions that he'd be like Bo or Deon, but I think he's an MLB asset nonetheless. Retain him. He could be a Tebow/Jordan novelty or he could be much more than that or he could be nothing at all. But don't pay him the 15 million; that's not at all what I'm advocating.
  14. I don't think your caveat is reasonable--"with a better farm system"; there's too many unknowns, both in terms of the health of your system (sure you can put in a scouting/development process that produces good results, but that process needs to adapt, which is just really hard to do) and the health of the player you are signing. Sure, if we could sign an Machado and get everything else right, we'd be golden. But my sense is you try to plan in the error rate of things going wrong when you make a signing of this sort, which I'm not sure the Twins can sustain. Prospects and stars sustain career injuries, the game changes in a way your front office didn't anticipate, your FO hit on some but not at all of your first round picks, on and on.
  15. I get where you are coming from. But the draft pick is sunk cost, and the A's need to ask themselves whether the money is worth making some kind of value out of that draft pick. If Murray succeeds in the NFL, it would be a media boon for the MLB to have him (esp. if he's allowed to play in even limited games). If Murray fails at the NFL, the A's retain their asset. (I understand there's plenty of scenario's where Murray tears both ACLs and can't play either.)
  16. The Twins carried over a 100 million in payroll (near or at record levels) for the entirety of Mauer's contract (iirc); the loss flexibility is felt squarely in not being able to make up for poor drafts and trades.
  17. That's supposition. We don't know what Machado's health would hold. Only Mauer's position portended health concerns (when did bilateral leg weakness occur?). I don't dispute that Machado is more valuable, and he's likely to get paid as such (70 million more or so than Mauer). The point about whether the Twins could actually operate with a contract that size isn't moot, whether we are talking about Machado or someone else in the future. (But I'm fine with letting the argument be.)
  18. Hugely generous!
  19. I can't square the criticism that "the twins lost their flexibility by choice" with your underlying point that the Twins should lose their flexibility by choice now in signing Machado. Is Machado so much more valuable (and worth that much more in cost) than Mauer at the time of his deal?
  20. I thought he need to accrue a certain amount of MLB time before that happened. IIRC, two appearances are not enough.
  21. I'd actually like to see evidence of lower-to-mid-market teams signing a player/contract of this sort which results in World Series trophies. This is kind of the opposite of what, say, the Cardinals do; they do make big acquisitions but when it comes to this scale they usually cut bait (I'm thinking of Pujols). The Twins signed their superstar and lost the roster flexibility that has largely allowed the Cardinals to remain competitive in Pujols' wake.
  22. Speaking of Burdi, is he still in Rule-5 purgatory?
  23. It would be smart for the A's/MLB to acquiesce and allow him to play football, and hold onto his rights, while inviting him to spring training or as much competition his NFL team allows. I mean Wilson went to Spring Training a couple times, right? And Seattle must have been okay with it; maybe there's a way to work it out where he plays both, but defers to the NFL where there are conflicts.
  24. The question for me isn't so much whether or not Machado is worth the value of an outsized contract, but rather, should Machado not turn out (say like Mauer, but worse?) can the Twins, with its market and revenue, sustain such a happenstance. If the answer is no, it's reasonable to not take the risk. That doesn't mean it's the right decision, but it is one I understand.
  25. Me too. Again, Parker does not preclude them from signing such a pitcher. No need to rag on this signing, when your issue is actually elsewhere.
