  1. Hey, my suggestion was mere tokenism. So DON'T* drive me over with the snark bus.
  2. Bad game for Sano, 4Ks
  3. Or perhaps filter Butera to Butera, "The Latino Whisperer," -- so we avoid the downside of word filters... just an idea
  4. Sounds like Dempster deal may fall through. I still think the Twins should wait to deal Liriano until the 31st as the market has been set pretty high imho, and teams might get pretty desperate.
  5. The Yankees gave up crap for Ichiro and are only pay two mil on his contract. Maybe Ichiro will hit better in Yankee stadium, but the Ms got smoked for their icon player. Ichiro evidently wanted out.
  6. There's nothing to suggest that they'll sign him long term, other than their absurd spending. Sanchez is a great pitcher, but he's not dominant, and he'll have to adjust to a new league with better hitting and moving to an offensive ballpark. We'll see. Over the past two months (small sample size admittedly) Liriano has been the better pitcher. It's good news for the Twins that Sanchez fetched a top 20 prospect, without taking a potential landing place for Liriano.
  7. So far, I'm pretty surprised by what teams are willing to give up...
  8. A Sanchez (plus Infante) fetched, Turner a top 20 prospect.
  9. Ichiro to the Yankees. So cross their interest for Span off the list. Can't believe the Mariners trades Ichiro.
  10. Anibal Sanchez to the tigers for Turner. Again, this is good news for the Twins.
  11. Major leaguer might be a phrase used to characterize talent level rather than time-table for the big show. In other words, TR wont just dump Morneau's salary.
  12. Right. Moving Morneau only makes sense if you are going to spend that money. I'm not sure how that 14 mil could be spent next year to make us more competitive in the near future without binding us to a long term contract. Morneau on a one year deal, while not ideal, seems like an appropriate risk for a team that might not compete and given his history with the org.
  13. I'm not sure that's all they got. Delgado is already in the majors, so my thinking is if the Twins are willing to take someone not as close to the majors, they should be able to get someone with higher upside. I was worried that the compensation rules would devalue trading for impending FAs... But you've been advocating resigning Liriano (right?), so you value him a bit more than many of us do...
  14. Well the Cubs get Delgado, which is high price for Dempster, and encouraging news for setting the market for starting pitching. Liriano, please, pitch lights out tonight.
  15. As kab suggested, if you trade both Willingham and Span, signing Hunter to one year deal (with an option year) to help make up the gap between Arcia/Benson/Hicks makes some sense.
  16. Righthander Kyle Gibson, on the comeback trail from Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery, threw a six-pitch scoreless inning on Saturday for the Gulf Coast League Twins in a 5-1 loss to the GCL Red Sox in Fort Myers, Fla., then threw about 15 more pitches in the bullpen.
  17. The way the Brewers have been run of late is a good model, even if not perfect. They actually pursue frontline players both through trades and FAs, in spite of their expense. The Giants, Nats and Cards are others. I like what Colorado tends to do, but they ****ed up their pitching in inconceivable ways. TB and Atlanta are world class, but part of their success is continuity and they really never put themselves in the position to rebuild...
  18. Poorly titled thread, honestly....
  19. In cases of both Medicare and Defense budgets, the government is essentially overpaying private business (healthcare providers and bomb makers) to provide public services. There's a huge lobby that no doubt pays everyone off to keep the status quo. Having all that government money artificially inflates both the costs of bombs and health, because they can essentially charge what they want. I'm not sure how you get private enterprise to avoid screwing the government, without more bureaucracy and regulation (more government). As Smerf says audits, but I think that's another layer that could be easily manipulated too. Look, my stance on government run institutions is this: I can live with inefficiency because there's no incentive for the government to screw its employees or to inhibit its service to make more and more money. (A government institution would never have an idea like planned obsolescence or patenting biological seeds or withholding technology for the iphone 2020) I know that its a bit rosy, but generally i think there's some truth there.
  20. Not with your team. By the time you're competitive Joey Bats will be old.
  21. Because Baker is a front line starter when healthy. A two year contract, with the second year being an option would help alleviate some risk. Say 5 mil the first year with a 9 mil option. Any FA pitcher we sign that has a track record will want a long term contract; there's risk with any pitcher when you're not going year to year. I'd rather have Baker than another Marquis or Livan Hernandez...
  22. Gibson, Hendricks, Broomberg, Blackburn, Baker (i think they bring him back on a Matt Capps like deal), and probably two FAs will compete for four spots in the rotation. Diamond is the only lock at this point; how odd is that! As for the FAs, I think it will depend on how the team finishes whether or not we take a few from the scrap heap or sign a Marcum type.
