A couple of guys have laid out a very interesting and detailed plan. It's always fun to read them over and agree or disagree with various moves. I don't know if it's realistic but I would make Wheeler my FA starting pitcher priority and if I can swing a deal for Syndergaard (even if it includes Buxton) I just MIGHT do it. That said, if we hang on to Buxton (which I would be fine with--I only give him up if I'm getting Thor) I go for Wheeler 5yrs $100 million, Odorizzi 3yrs $42 million and Porcello 2-3 yrs 8-10 million per year. Balazovic will be up soon and i think sometime in May Graterol is up and pitching 2 inning relief appearances with a look to move him into the rotation later in the year or next season (much like how the Twins handled Johan Santana). Keep 'em coming boys, this is fun !!

I can't speak for everyone looking to trade Eddie, but I will speak for myself. I LIKE Eddie Rosario. No "Hate" involved here. But we need to fill FOUR of our 5 starting pitching slots and we've got not one, but TWO young corner outfielder types in Larnach and Kiriloff that WILL be better hitters than Eddie. I look at our roster and where else are you going to get a GOOD starting pitcher? There's a reason Eddie's name keeps coming up. He's not as bad as people are making him out to be. he's actually pretty darn good. There will be more than a handful of teams that could use a 32 HR 109 RBI guy in their lineup. But honestly, our lineup can withstand losing Eddie's bat if it brings us back a solid #2 or #3 type. I guarantee you, once Larnach and Kiriloff make it to the big leagues, with whatever team they end up on, they will be more productive overall than Eddie. They will both see more pitches and be tougher outs. But Eddie could really help a team that needs some sock in one of their corner outfield positions.

Front Page: Assessing Eddie Rosario's Trade Market
TopGunn#22 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That's a great point HrbieFan, the Braves are a possibility. Oakland has a need. But I think the D-Backs are the fit. Archie Bradley intrigues me, but the Twins need starting pitching more than bullpen. I'm using Eddie in a package to get Robbie Ray. Ray takes the place of Kyle Gibson, which would be a tremendous upgrade in flat out "Stuff" to our pitching staff. If they want, the Twins and D-Backs could expand the deal to include both Ray and Bradley---maybe the Twins offer Nick Gordon and Blaine Enlow ? -
I agree with a lot of what Doc Bauer says, but I truly believe Larnach or Kiriloff will be ready sometime in 2020. They won't break with the club, but to see one of them up in May or June wouldn't surprise me at all. Eddie has warts and we've all become very familiar with them. But 32 HR's and 109 RBI's just don't fall out of trees every day. Not many teams have a Larnach or Kiriloff knocking on the door. I still think a package of Eddie and Nick Gordon to a team like Arizona could get us Robbie Ray. If the Twins were to trade Eddie for a pitcher like Ray and then sign a veteran OF'er like Garcia or Dickerson (I prefer Garcia, he's a RH bat) then they can afford to be patient with Larnach/Kiriloff. But one of them is going to make it up in 2020 and whoever it is will be a tougher out than Eddie.

Adding an Outfielder for the 2020 Twins
TopGunn#22 commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Dickerson is probably the best option for me. Unlike others, I beleive Eddie WILL be on the move. Dickerson gives Larnach and Kiriloff at least half the year to make the jump. Dickerson is a good glove and a bat with some sock. Eddie needs to be moved for a starting pitcher. Reunite him with Escobar in Arizona in a package for Robbie Ray and Bradley.- 6 comments

Front Page: The Defensive Future of Royce Lewis
TopGunn#22 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting comments and thoughts from all. Here are a few of mine: 1. Remember how Polanco was moved around and played some 2B and SS in the minors prior to his callup? 2. Kiriloff & Lewis are always talked about as our top 2 position player prospects, but don't sleep on Larnach. He should be right there with those 2. 3. The mystery man in the Twins minor leagues is Wander Javier. Once thought to be our BEST SS prospect, he's had 2 injury marred years. This is a big "IF" but, what if he comes back strong this year? That could have an effect on Lewis and his future position. 4. I think the best plan is to have Lewis play the majority of his innings at SS. But I would certainly give him innings at 3B and CF. I think those who point out added versatility could speed his move to the majors are correct. 5. There is no doubt in my mind that Sano is a future DH/1B. 3B will be a hole to fill in one or 2 years.- 39 replies

Moving Eddie Rosario, but Where?
TopGunn#22 commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Hahahaha. We get what you mean though. To those who say "how do you replace 32 HR's and 109 RBI's ?? Well, the Nationals let Harper walk and they did just fine. All offensive stats from this last season are a little inflated, but that shouldn't diminish what Eddie did. Still, this team has 4 of their 5 starting rotation slots to fill. I don't want this to seem like I'm diminishing Eddie, but both Larnach and Kiriloff will be better, more productive hitters wherever the Twins put them in the lineup. Both young guys have better strike zone awareness than Eddie. They will get on base at a higher rate. They won't hit 32 HR's or drive in 109 runs in their rookie seasons, but they won't be hitting cleanup either. But you deal Eddie becasue you have Larnach and Kiriloff. Maybe you deal him to the D-Backs for Robbie Ray ? Maybe it's a bigger package with more players, but we need starting pitching MORE than we need Eddie's bat.- 26 comments

Mike, I get what you're feeling, but I would agree with an earlier post, it's not hate. It's that Eddie is a good player who would probably get us a very good starting pitcher and with 4 out of the 5 spots needing to be filled in next year's rotation the Twins NEED to get one SP thru a trade. Even with the payroll giving them a LOT of room to operate, they can't just "sign everybody." I want the Twins to aim high for starting pitching. No Carl Pavano, Martin Perez types. Go get a Cole or a Strasburg. With Larnach and Kiriloff waiting in the wings we can't keep everybody. I think BOTH will be better, more productive hitters than Eddie. And that's not a slam on Eddie. I watched Larnach come thru in the clutch time and time again 2 years ago in leading Oregon State to the NCAA Championship. I was thrilled when we drafted him. Kiriloff was drafted out of high school one year before Larnach. He looks like a STUD. Many are targeting Eddie for a trade because those two guys could be up in the bigs very soon, sooner if we trade Eddie.

The Twins MUST be players on many levels for starting pitching this off-season. They SHOULD go hard for either Cole-7 yrs $250 million or Strasburg 6-yrs 210 million. That's what it's going to take to get either of these guys. They need to make a qualifying offer to Odorizzi and then either make a trade or add a guy like Wheeler. They really have 4 spots to fill because only Berrios is a lock. Perez will not be back. They have a tremendous opportunity with the way the everyday lineup stacks up age wise/talent wise and especially cost wise. But there is a reason starting pitching costs so much on the open market...it's rare you have an opportunity. With Cole, you have a chance at arguably the BEST starting pitcher in baseball this year and he's 29 years old. Imagine him fronting our staff with our lineup. That said, imagine what the Yankees, Dodgers, Angels etc...all think of that idea as well. The Twins need a #1 like a Cole of Strasburg. If you go Cole/Strasburg, Berrios and Odorizzi you can afford to allow a Dobnak or Smeltzer as your #5 and trade for your #4. I really think Larnach and Kiriloff are close to being major league ready. And both of them could be better hitters than Rosario. They both have better strike zone awareness than Eddie so should get on base at a higher clip. Maybe you use Eddie to get a Robbie Ray type to be your #4. Wheeler has talent, and would fit in well too, but our "depth" for starting pitching should be Dobnak, Smeltzer, Thorpe.

The 1969 Twins are my favorite Twins team. I was a 6th grader. As good as the Twins were, that 1969 Orioles team was LOADED. The Twins were swept in the League Championship Series in both 1969 and 1970 by Baltimore and nearly every game was a close---one run type of game. I was disappointed to see the Twins scrapped those wonderful 1969-era pinstriped jerseys prior to this season. Sharpest looking uniform the Twins ever had.

The idea of doing the Stroman/Giles for Larnach and Graterol and then spinning Stroman to the Mets in a Syndergaard package is interesting. Absent that, what major league pitcher would the Twins include in a package with the Mets for Syndergaard ?? Gibson, Odorizzi and Pineda are all FA's after the season. Could one of them be included ?? Or would the Mets not be interested in acquiring a major league pitcher who would be a FA after the end of the season ?? Would that mean, by default, that the needed pitcher would be Martin Perez ?? Or is there a minor league starter that the Mets would be comfortable sliding right into their rotation ??

I agree Ted, Kiriloff and Larnach (I believe) will BOTH be good major league hitters. But they are redundant. Both are corner OF/1B types. And with the youth and talent currently in the Twins outfield, we simply can't play them all. PITCHING wins in the postseason. Especially POWER pitching. That's why I think the Twins should build a package around Kiriloff and blow the Mets away to get Thor. The last time the Twins had anything close to Thor/Berrios potential at the top of their rotation was Johan Santana and a young Francisco Liriano. This is a deal the Twins need to decide they WON'T be outbid for. As Ted also said, the Twins need to decide if they are going to deal in $$$ or prospects. Thor should be acquired with prospects. The other 2 spots in next year's rotation will need to be dealt with in $$$.

To add to the above: I align my thinking primarily to ChiefsKid and Thrylos. We currently have tremendous depth in our farm system. In addition to Larnach (who led Oregon St. to the NCAA College World Series Championship a year and a half ago and was the guy who came up with clutch hit after clutch hit) and Rooker as corner OF/1B prospects behind Kiriloff, we have Wander Javier and the kid we JUST drafted in the first round this year as a SS (behind Lewis) we can certainly give up one of Lewis or Kiriloff. If the Mets want BOTH, I counter with "O.K. then send us Diaz and Wheeler and we'll throw in Gonsalves and Gibson." We'd be parting with our top 2 prospects but gaining a front line starter for several years (Thor) an elite closer who is 25-years old (Diaz) and a tremendous arm for the rest of this season in Wheeler. Figure out any additional "sweetener.". This is adding All Star caliber players who are 26 and 25 years old for "prospects." Granted, these are great prospects, but you're getting YOUNG, CONTROLLABLE, ALL-STAR talent in return. I would NEVER trade pieces like this for rentals but I WOULD for young and controllable All Star talent like Thor and Diaz. (and maybe we even convince Wheeler to stick with us if we have a great post-season ride and possibly win a World Series.

I would never give up BOTH Lewis and Kiriloff. But I would give up one of them to get Thor and the guy I'd give up would be Kiriloff (it pains me to say it, because he's going to be a GOOD M.L. player). We currently have Kepler, Rosario and Buxton on the major league club. With Larnach and Rooker in the minors and getting closer we simply cannot play all of these guys. Kiriloff would be a GREAT get by the Mets. And I still think I'd give up a pretty big package headlined by Kiriloff and go for Thor AND Edwin Diaz. Thor is 26 years old and has "Ace" stuff. He headlines your staff with Berrios for years to come. Taylor is a tremendous lefty out of the pen, but Diaz is 25 years old and saved 57!! games last year. He's your closer for years to come. How does Taylor in the 8th and Diaz in the 9th sound if you're battling the Astros or Yankees I'd part with Kiriloff and Graterol (2 of our top 3 prospects) as well as one of Gibson or Perez if the Mets MUST have a back-end SP as part of the deal. I'd probably include a Gonsalves as a sweetener. If I HAD to in order to close the deal, I might offer another decent piece. Thor just has higher upside than Stroman. Look, I wouldn't be adverse to Stroman OR Giles (or both in the right deal). I just like the tremendous potential of Thor at the top of our rotation.

A Suggestion for the FO for The Trade Deadline
TopGunn#22 commented on mike8791's blog entry in mike8791's Blog
Mike8791 You are hitting the nail right on the head. Look who we would be dealing with here---The NEW YORK Mets! Not Kansas City, Not Tampa Bay etc... This is a team and a GM who desperately need a quick turnaround NEXT YEAR. Thor is 26 years old. Edwin Diaz is 25. These are young pieces the Twins could build around going forward. Doc Bauer, you make a good point about trading a starting piece (Sano) in the middle of a pennant race but my counterpoint is that I believe we have a better lineup (offensively & defensively) with Marwan and Arraz in the lineup than Sano. If you disagree with me I can respect that. Players like Gibson & castro COULD be resigned by the Mets at a reasonable cost and sending out the contract of Diaz and the arb. eligible contract of Thor could certainly help. I think the Twins lineup is dangerous. I think a 3 man playoff rotation of Thor, Berrios and Odorizzi would be formidable and could stack up with an Astro staff of Verlander, Cole and whoever they acquire (and they WILL acquire somebody like Mad-Bum). Then Taylor Rogers and Edwin Diaz (57 saves last year--57 !!!) with Trevor May and Ryne Harper in the bullpen would match up well with the talented Yankee bullpen. I want a BOLD move. I don't want a #3 starter like Stroman and a sore elbow reliever like Giles. -
Making the Stroman Deal for Minnesota
TopGunn#22 commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
That Giants trade is a JOKE. Nothing more than rumor mill gristle. The Stroman/Giles trades are O.K. but I wouldn't give up Kiriloff. I would go for a 26-year old pitcher with MUCH better stuff who is also under contract thru 2020. That pitcher is Noah Syndergaard and Wes Johnson and Co. could do a LOT with his talent. I propose trading Graterol, Sano, Castro and Nick Gordon for Thor and Edwin Diaz. The Mets are a MESS right now and Thor COULD be had for the right deal. Sano replaces Todd Frazier, Castro gives them their first major league catcher since Piazza. Graterol & Gordon give them young talent. Throw in Gonsalves for good measure. The Mets need some talent ready to contribute immediatly (Sano, Castro) and some future talent that could contribute soon (Graterol, Gordon) and someone to take a flyer on (Gonsalves).- 8 comments

A Suggestion for the FO for The Trade Deadline
TopGunn#22 commented on mike8791's blog entry in mike8791's Blog
I JUST commented on this very scenario in another article !! I agree with you 110% Mike. I had Thor and Edwin Diaz coming to the Twins for Graterol, Sano, Nick Gordon and another player. That player would be Jason Castro. Mets catching has been a disaster since Piazza retired. If I had to throw in a Gonsalves I would. An overpay? Maybe. Not enough? I don't think so. Sano replaces Todd Frazier who they will probably trade anyway. Castro becomes their starting catcher. Gordon could play SS or 2B (they have Rosario at SS who has been a disappointment and Old geezer Robbie Cano at 2B). Sano and Alonso along with Conforto gives the Mets a nice middle of the order. We go into a playoff rotation of Thor, Berrios and Odorizzi and Perez can come out of the pen where I think he'd be VERY effective. I don't want rentals like Mad-Bum and Will Smith. I want assets that stay with us. Thor is 26 years old. Acquire him and immediately start talking 4-year $100 million dollar extension. Wes Johnson and Co. could do wonders for Syndergaard. DO IT !! -
Article: Miguel Sano: A Fading Superstar
TopGunn#22 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The article is 180 degrees in the wrong direction. Sano is starting to hit. I just think the lineup would be better with a better situational hitter in his place and a better glove in the field. I'm hoping the Twins could include in in a trade to acquire a big time frontline starter. There was a lot of debate weather Boyd and Greene would be worth giving up Lewis or Kiriloff and A LOT of other quality. I say no. If I'm giving up one of Lewis, Kiriloff or Graterol I'm going for a combo of Thor/Edwin Diaz or Bauer/Hand. I don't want rentals like Mad-Bum and Will Smith. I would be willing to part with someone like Graterol, Rooker, Nick Gordon and another decent prospect for either combo I previously mentioned. The Mets are a mess. They spent a ton of $$ bringing in Wilson Ramos and he's so poor behind the plate Thor and deGrom are done pitching to him. Diaz is a mess because he can't throw his slider in the dirt with men on base if Ramos is catching. A better situation would do wonders for each. Bauer/Hand would also be outstanding. I don't want half-measures from our front office this deadline. i want a bold move that strenthens us this year and for a couple after that.- 114 replies

I just don't understand the idea that Kimbrel might have to accept a role other than our CLOSER. What in the heck are we talking about here? Compare his track record and pedigree with anyone else in our bullpen. It's not even CLOSE. Is this just dumba$$ speculation? Because no matter where the Twins are on Kimbrel's "LIST" if we were to torpedo our own chances by not making him the closer that would be just stupid. I wouldn't mess around. I'd make him a solid offer for 2 or 3 years. He's a STUD closer. If we expect to contend for several years (not just this year) having a guy like him to close games out would be essential. His presence has a chain reaction down the line for our bullpen and makes everybody better. And as someone else pointed out he only costs us money---no prospects. The other good point made earlier was this: Is he throwing mid-high 90's ?? If so, RUN, don't walk to get this guy in the fold.
-
I agree that patience, to a certain degree is good. But, if yah snooze...yah lose ! Cody Allen would be a GREAT pickup. And at his age, a 2 or 3 year contract would be justified. Someone like him at the back end means pitchers like May, Rodgers and Reed can be used in high leverage situations. For years we've read endless stories about all these young flamethrowers in the minors being groomed for our bullpen. These guys are all still MIA. Go get a Cody Allen and continue to see Romero as a starter. Keuchel would be a good consolation prize. But I'm concerned about his drop in velo.
