Pineda Is Getting A Raw Deal If Something Doesn't Change

Yet...... it takes a voluntary movement to eat. It takes no movement to not eat. Most things that are worth it are not easy. It still happens everyday, all the time. It is all in commitment. -

Cleveland MLB team reportedly considering name change
h2oface replied to Nine of twelve's topic in Other Baseball
That is what I was always told in my limited conversations with Indians. Yet, even here, people prefer to assign them Native Americans. Interesting, no? From another poster: "The problem is this: naming a mascot after a now-living ethnic group--we don't do this to any group except First Nations people." I guess, regardless of the qualification, we find from further discussion, that this is not true. Although, Indians and variations are certainly preferred in the history of naming athletic teams. And I don't know that I am part of the proverbial "we" when it comes to naming. The Negro Leagues 100 year anniversary just passed, and celebrations recently happened. There is no call by anyone, as far as I know, to change the name of the leagues that were, nor the name of Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in KC. In fact, those involved that still live would be furious if somone, anyone or group, tried to change it, even those of their own race. https://theapopkavoice.com/on-the-100th-anniversary-of-the-negro-leagues-a-look-back-at-what-was-lost/ The main point I would make in this discussion, is that "Redskins" is nothing like Braves, Warriors, Chiefs, Seminoles, and Indians. It is so far to the extreme, and there is no question of honor. To classify without nuance is irresponsible and accademically unsound. I don't have the answer(s) going forward, but just like people trying to say Colin Kaepernick was saying something he wasn't by kneeling, and not listening to the only message it had, I will ignore the prejudice. I will tend to pay most attention to the Tribal people who are being offended, or not (as many aren't), and not the blevy of extemporaneous opinions. -

I wonder if the Celtics are getting pressured. "Today, the term Celtic generally refers to the languages and respective cultures of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man, and Brittany, also known as the Celtic nations. These are the regions where four Celtic languages are still spoken to some extent as mother tongues." -

I see the sarc, and this is just a note.....most of the "native americans" I know don't really consider that a proper reference, but one made up by others again, and they prefer the tribal names. -

I have always had big problems with The Redskins. I think the logo trademark mascot was offensive that the Indians used for a long time. But Indians? I grew up in the Black Hills, and remember Russell Means and AIM naming themselves the American Indian Movement. I don't see it as a slur, or the Braves, or the Warriors of Sioux Falls Washington High School I went to. I don't like the tomahawk chop and call the fans do (a false stereotype). I don't mind Florida State being the Seminoles, or using particular tribal names, as it seems like in honor of them. I think there should be care to represent the logo pic, and not ever have it be a caricature that is offensive. I have attended many tribal celebrations, and they always include traditional extravagant dress and dances. So I don't get the uproar about Indians. But I'm listening. Maybe I am part of the problem. I don't mind it changing either. I just don't see how it is grouped with the Redskins, at all. Are Trojan ancestors upset? Do pirates care about Pirates and Buccaneers? And the Cavalier the University of Virginia uses is pretty weird as a mascot, and what is a cavalier, anyway. Can one only name a team an animal or fish or bird or insect (etc) now? -
Three Twins Prospects Could be Stars of 2020
h2oface replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Every season is different. If you know the season is 162 games, you have a certain game plan. If it is 60 games, a different game plan for the season. It will show the good teams, the teams that get the same set rules to compete by, and shine. It doesn't make them less deserving when they win. In my mind, it makes them even more deserving, because they were able to adapt, find the edge they needed sooner than later, and powered through. It will force moves that will bring young players to the forefront as some tired vets tank out of the gate. No hanging around because of seniority. It will be extremely challenging. I think the intensity will be fun, if the COVID doesn't ruin the plan. Starters can be more like relievers as they only need to make 12 or so starts. Time to put up or sit. Managers decisions will be amplified. Every at bat will be important. I don't like runners on second to start extra innings, but then, I don't like umpires guessing at balls and strikes. But it is all baseball, and I can't wait to see who the new young fearless stars will be.- 7 replies

Sure. Why not? No names like this on trophies that are for another player or team are ever needed. Statues? Move the art, museum the art, but never destroy it. More art. New art. Move it later too. We are the art we leave behind.

Award's like this don't need superfluous names attached to them, ever. They should only honor the winner of the year. Who knows how they will behave later (Puckett). And if you must, who cares if it is named one thing and changed later? They do it with stadiums all the time now. Sure, that is for $, but there is not a second thought. Perhaps just make it a size 8 or less font.....

Neal: Twins Radio Broadcast Team Will Not Travel
h2oface replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I think the less said the better. We are finally going to "hear" baseball again, I hope. The players conversation, the chatter, instead of the incessant blast of superfluous sound and tired promotions at the ballpark. Might need a slight time delay.... and someone on the mute switch. -

Pineda Is Getting A Raw Deal If Something Doesn't Change

The cancelled games should count as games of the suspension, period. Just like the off days count for a pitcher as part of a suspension. Diuretics (think of passing urine and and not the other option as in diarrhea to remember the spelling) as a plan for weight loss or control is really pretty...... not smart, anyway. It is pretty simple, really. Will power and eat less (sure, design a diet to maximize the plan) is a sure fire way. Will power. -
Twins remove Calvin Griffith statue

Sure. I know someone that everytime he says something or tweets something that exposes his true nature..... it is always a day later called a joke. I'm not buying that at all, in either case. And not at all like the actor analogy. There is no mystery that the actor is acting. And he doesn't have to ever explain that isn't the real person. -

Griffith's statements were only a "mistake" in that he said what he always felt outloud for all to hear, and truly exposed who he always was and the dogma that he came to infect his life with and spread it to others around him, if he could. It was not a "one time thing". Rod Carew exemplifies a grace and wisdom that is truly inspiring. For me, the fact that he can teach us that grace and practice forgiveness and understanding regardless, is a lesson that I can aways take a refresher course in. -
Owners of baseball teams have historically, since the beginning of the game, reaped the rewards and declined sharing any windfall with the people/players who actually make the game happen. Billionaires own baseball teams as a hobby, and use the 'business' rhetoric to screw the players. Always have, and always will. Because they can. No matter what dogma is spewed, baseball is not a normal business, and really has no rules (and unlike other sports, has no salary cap anyway, and allows for them to literally spend whatever they want for owning this hobby). It is time for them to take the hit. Bite the Bullet. Any agreement and any start up could all fall apart in a heatbeat anyway, as irresponsible pig headed fans disregard whatever protocol is set up, and selfishly expose the other fans that respect it. It is happening in every restaurant and every public place I have seen in this 'start up'. The owners could easily take the hit. And they should. They won't be exposing themselves to fans and the masses and will be staying safe, in their opulent digs, either at home, or in the kings box at the stadium. Just like oil companies, who use any random event to justify raising prices in a false option driven market, owners are attempting to make the players share their 'risk' for chosing to own a team and not keep their contractual obligations, but will not be sharing any future windfall, just as they haven't in the past. I am pretty sure that it is in no contract written, that if a pandemic hits, this contract can be renegotiated, just as if someone like Garver has a season that is actually worth 20 to 25 times more than his contract, that the owner will renegotiate and give him a bonus with a smile on their face. It is their time to take a hit, and see if they can get a season in, and hope they can make it safe for the players, who will be taking all the personal health risk, and hope it doesn't all fall apart, and the players are compromised and have to quarantine, and the whole thing is shut down as fast it it was in spring training. They have already made their money, and will again in the future. In Minnesota, they even got the fans/constituents to pay massive amounts for the stadium they played in, and then didn't do what they agreed, and spend more money on the team for about a decade, charged people to park to come to the game they are already paying for, made them pay 5 times the value of any concession, and hoarded the money. Owners are screwing 90% of the players (especially if you consider the minor leaguers), and will every chance they get. This is no exception, only now they want to make it 100% of the players.

Max Kepler and the Cost of Silence
h2oface replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, it sure pissed off the white nationalists that he was elected, and woke up and accentuated their racial agendas. But Obama didn't cause that "racial division". I guess it was caused by the majority of the American people that voted for him, both elections. Usually, when the person that gets the most votes becomes President, it is more unifying. Seemed to me to be a much more comfortable time. -

Wow. First electing a black president is progress, and in the same breath, it apparently hurts the country, and sets us back by stirring up racial divisions, which is not progress. That doesn't really work for me. I read that Brock called the guy's point asinine. I think, if asked for my third party opinion, I would agree, but I'm also betting that surely he can come up with points that aren't asinine, therefore he is not asinine, nor did Brock call him that. Pointedly, I'm not a mod..... but I can read pretty good. -

Now that's funny! .....Only Kepler's mother's father was in the military - US Military, not German, he was American - US Army Intelligence Officer ...... sneaky ....... could be an outlier..... -

Well, I certainly understand that is your opinion of this 27 year old that was born in Germany, the son of an American mother (daughter of a U.S. Army intelligence officer, who moved around the country and the world as her father received different postings, finally setting in San Antonio, Texas as a teenager - Max might even be able to get dual citizenship?) and a German father. And we do fundamentally disagree. But I doubt he isn't fullfilling his contract with the Twins, and I doubt there is language in it that obligates him to some of the things you are assuming are not in his plans for the future. I know you are of a generation that views the world in a significant lens through twitter and instagram feeds and likes. The story isn't over, and neither is Kepler's part in it, probably. Thanks for speaking out. Words are great. Actions will do more, and I suspect you have some up your sleeve. But yup. I don't put baseball players, or professional athletes on a pedestal, or expect them to be more than an athlete for the short time of their lives that they can. I just expect them to get better every year, and be MVPs. The whole team. So there is my fanciful, demanding expectation. And it only leads me to disappointment. Such is my tragic life. -

This whole leader thing is something created by others that want heroes. Just because someone is a professional athlete, does not make them a leader. It makes them lucky. Lucky that their natural talent and hard work has gotten them something others aspire to. It doesn't automatically give them a platform that they have to aspire to or engage in. That does not automatically come with the territory. That expectation is not a fair one to have, in my opinion. But then, baseball players are not heroes to me. They don't have to have a command of the language, politacal aspirations, be a poet, be an activist, or include me into their private life at all. They can, but to me, it is not what he is required to do. At all. Entrusted to be a representative leader in this city where he is known and admired? Not by me. I expect him to get a bunch of hits and not not drop the ball and throw some runners out. No hero. No leader. Just a lucky 20-something that gets to play baseball for a lot of money. He is in his 20's! Not a leader in my book, at all. Time for Billy Bob's acceptance speech at the 2015 Golden Globes again....... -

Same here! I pay way too much attention and probably shouldn't. I would probably have lower blood pressure and like people more. When I had several different radio shows, each with a niche (Folk & Beyond, Zydecajun Conspiracy, Acoustic Windows, and Jazz Songlines), people would come up to me all the time and say "hey, do you know so and so? No? Oh you gotta hear them!" I always felt like I should, like wtf is wrong with me..... until I realized it is OK to not know everything. One just can't know everything, no matter how hard they try. I had no idea there was a blue lives matter flag/symbol/emblem or mask. And I am not going to punish myself for being ignorant in that regard. I am certainly not going assume Kepler did, or should if he didn't. Nor am I going to assign "leader" to baseball players or any athlete just because more people might know them because the are a professional athlete. I fear for the world being left to our grandchildren and children. Nothing will be solved on this thread, that is for sure. I am grateful for the post, though, for now I know so much more about those that post here. Made some good notes. Thanks for the post. "Today I’m sad. Sad that conditions were such that such events as happened in the last week were inevitable. Sad that people who love and are loved by others hate some on sight. Sad that sometimes that hate is perhaps justified. Sad that an expression of a righteous message is tinged by, conflated with and justifies acts of violence, destruction and theft in so many beautiful cities and on the eve of the reopening of some of the businesses now destroyed. Sad that some of this destruction has nothing to do with the dynamic and is being brought by other factions trying to stir things up. Sad that I’m told I “dont get to have an opinion on this” because I’m white. Sad that I can’t quite agree with this when so many whom I respect do. Sad that my perspective is so incomplete. Sad that I am part of the problem, Sad that I don’t know the solution. Sad that knowing the solution would not make it so. Sad that I believe that."
