  1. My thoughts exactly as I was reading thru this thread. A very visable portion of a GM's job is making trades, an ex-scout will know more about players than a person that has risen thru the business side of the company. Look no further than Bill Smith.
  2. Good article!!! I think another factor is a losing team = declining attendance = less $10 beers and $8 hotdogs sold. Less revenue = less money to spend on players next year = a losing team again. The longer they let it spiral downward the harder it is to reverse the spiral.
  3. I didn't like last year’s signing because there wasn't a 2nd year added on, he rehabbed on the Twins dime with no further commitment. Now he'll be another innings eater, hopefully keeping the Twins close so the bullpen can take over. As far as the slow pitching pace, the Twins knew what they're getting themselves into; they wouldn't have signed him if they weren't ready to live with it. Don’t you think that was part of the discussion during the contract negotiations?? Hopefully Gardy and Rick Anderson can convince him that he can be more effective pitching faster. Since I mostly listen to the games the slow pace doesn't matter to me. In fact I think that baseball (and football) are too slow paced to devote 3+ hours too, they're fine if they're playing in the background. When Johan was pitching I always made a point of listening to the Twins, if people don’t like the pace of Pelfrey’s games, don’t watch that game.
  4. I'll probably get lambasted for this but I have to disagree, I was assigned 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' in a college novel class, it was horrible, I love to read but I couldn't finish it. If I found a copy at a garage sale I would buy it, take it home, and have a book burning party. Then again I can't understand the facination with the 'The Great Gatsby' either, twice I was assigned to read it, slogged thru it but wouldn't recommend it to anybody. I think TR is spending some money because he realizes that the 'cash cow' called Target Field is going to dry up if they don't try to put a winning team on the field. Fans will just stop going to games, less $8 beers and $10 sandwiches sold.
  5. Agreed Willingham, Pressley, and Arcia will be the starters in 2014. Hopefully Willingham rebounds so the Twins get a good return for him at the trade deadline. No matter how good Hicks plays in spring training he played himself into AAA last year and will start there this year, back when Willie is gone or in the case of an injury.
  6. I was actually thinking about starting a post titled 'Buxton for Price'. Forget adding other prospects, would you trade Buxton for Price straight-up? Even if the Twins could sign him to 4 more years? Personally I wouldn’t, Will Myers will haunt KC for the next 15 years, but some of the people on this board are sooooo desperate for a winning Twins team that I’m curious what they would say about ‘Buxton for Price?’
  7. I think what the Twins will do is find out once and for all whether Plouffe and Parmalee can play on a regular basis. If Plouffe fails early, Sano is up - provided hes hitting well in AAA. Otherwise hes a September call-up. If they both rake, its a nice problem to have. Parmalee will be fighting for at bats with Arcia, Willingham, and Doumit but that should clear up once Willingham and/or Doumit are traded at the all star break. I'm sure Twins management and everybody on this board hope that they have good first halves to increase their value. Hicks played himself into AAA to start the season regardless how good he plays in spring training. Pressly will play until he plays himself off the team. If Hicks and Pressly both play well, again its a nice problem to have. The trades of Willingham and Doumit will solve the problem. The Twins aren't going to win in 2014, adding another veteran player or two just muddies up the water, by letting these guys play they either increase in value for a possible trade, show that they have a longterm role on the Twins, or they play themselves off the team.
  8. yes!!!!
  9. Glad that the Twins didn't resign him, I heard too many short sarcastic answers from him during interviews - until he got a little humility after his injuries. You wonder why he would even want to keep playing, one more concussion could affect the rest of his life, he already banked one big contract, how much money does a person need? Good luck to him.
  10. I think the Twins learned their lesson with Hicks, no matter how good he plays in spring training on opening day he'll be in AAA and will have to earn his way back. They picked up Presley for a reason. I heartily agree with your idea of jettisoning Doumit and Willingham, but not until the trade deadline. Right now their value is at its low, if they could get hot, they might be worth more by then.
  11. I agree!! I loved watching the Twins when Johan was pitching but I don't want to watch a shell of Johan, don't want to watch him come in and go 1-6 and get released, I'd like to remember him as he was.
  12. This is a great site, I followed Seth over here from his site but I’ve become more of a lurker because of: 1) The Negativity. Someone else mentioned it and I thought I’d second the thought. I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t read the comments, or if I do I just skim thru and read the ones from the original founders. 2) Lack of tolerance for lack of baseball knowledge. I participate in a lot of other forums on fishing, hunting, farming, etc. and everyone is always very helpful, not here, I’ve been blasted for posting something ‘stupid’. That keeps me from replying to posts, I just lurk instead. 3) English lessons. I’ve been blasted for using the wrong argument, had ‘Occam’s razor’ thrown at me – what difference does it make? Is this a Twins baseball forum or an English lesson forum?? Again it inhibits posting. It IS a very informative site, I’ve learned a lot about baseball, and I never used to follow the Twins minor league system. Keep up the good work!! Side note to the administrators, you need more horsepower, the site is getting slow to load...
  13. One fact that nobody has brought up is that the Twins philosophy has always been that if they make the playoffs, anything can happen. So they built teams that would win the division and then hoped for the best. I would settle for those teams again, teams that had a chance to win every series vs. the team that we have now. I shake my head at all the 'World Series or bust' posters, you're setting yourself up to always be unhappy, only one team can win the series every year.
  14. This is one of the problems I see with TD, everyone thinks they're an English professor and if you screw up on your post, use the wrong term or wording, you get called on it. It discourages posting. I've had terms like 'Occams razor' thrown at me and my posts!! WTF??!! Concentrate on the baseball content of the posts and try not to make it into an English class.
  15. Good analysis!!!! Thanks for taking the time to write it!!! Gives some of us that aren't in the 'Ron Gardenhire and Terry Ryan suck' camp some hope.
  16. Good article Seth!!! Gives Twins fans some hope!!! Also shows that sometimes you need some luck.
  17. Is anyone really surprised at this??!!!!!! Every time I read a post here on TD that says that the Twins have X amount of dollars to spend and should go after this free agent and that free agent I'm thinking that they're %$@#% dreaming!!! That’s not the Twins way. Terry Ryan will pick up an innings eater and a couple of projects this winter and that’s it.
  18. When was the last time that Terry Ryan and the Twins signed a big buck free agent pitcher??? It’s not going to happen. He'll continue to bottom feed, sign an 'inning eater' and maybe a reclamation project, but he won't sign a high priced pitcher until the rest of the team is competitive in a couple of years and that high priced pitcher will push them over the top ala Jack Morris. I don't think the Twins see the urgency to spend big bucks on a pitcher in order to appease the fan base; they're counting on the all-star game and the arrival of stud prospects Sano and Buxton to keep fans interested. Starting rotation next year will be a combination of Correia, Gibson, Diamond, bargain basement signee - with Worley, Hendricks, Hernandez, and other similar pitchers fighting it out for the last spot.
  19. Good post!!! KC will regret trading Will Myers for the next 15 years!!
  20. Last Friday I went to listen to the Twins on the radio and both stations where I can normally catch the Twins were broadcasting high school football games - and I didn't really care. Thank you Pohlads on two counts, broadcasting on a network thats unreliable and putting a product on the field that is very uninspiring.
  21. Let him walk unless he gives a serious hometown discount, something in the range of 2 years at $4 million a year. Do you suppose he could feed his family on that? Remember, he's already banked $80 million, let him show that he truly wants to stay here. Will his pride let him accept $4 million a year from the Twins if some other team offers him $7??? My guess is no. What will other teams offer?? Thats the key.
  22. No. I loved listening to the Twins when Johan pitched, I don't want to listen as a shell of the old Johan struggles, I want to remember him as he was.
  23. I was just surprised that people were actually praising Terry Ryan, normally posters are saying he's dumber than dirt and can't do anything right.
  24. Tough crowd here, Terry can't do much right can he??! Whats the title of the other thread where he's actually getting compliments?
