  1. A 95 rather than an 88 for a fastball might account for the difference in their careers. I wish there was a coach who knew how to get that sped out of a pitcher. Maybe Verlander's catcher frames pitches better so he gets more strikeouts
  2. Yes the Twins need significantly better. That is why it baffles me why these people have been so gung-ho on all of the third tier free agents. Marcum is not a third tier.
  3. TJ was early May Pelfrey made 5.7 million last year. Of course the Mets non tendered that. Given his first couple years in the majors, how much of a raise do you think Boras could have won?
  4. Like many contracts in baseball Upton had a limited no trade clause. He, like many others were able to negotiate their ability to be picky. They are usually picky about going to losing teams.
  5. As TV becomes a larger source of revenue then you would have to look at a market that could bring in the numbers to make the money. Tampa is at 13, Portland 22. Charlotte 24, Rahliegh/Durham is close and is 27. Atlanta would not be happy with the latter. Florida just does not seem to be interested in regular season baseball. 20 thousand a game in Tampa. Close to 30000 were coming to the dome to watch the same level of play. Miami is a different argument for attendance. They need to figure out they need to sustain winning to build a fan base.
  6. Kudos to Marcum's agent. If Marcum stays healthy and if the Mets have some defense behind him Marcum may get a nice payday. Even if the Mets came in lower than a mythical Twins offer he would stand to make more than the money back with good numbers.
  7. The holes in the roster are so huge that one player is not going to make the difference. If they had signed one of your guys rather than Correia, the focus of the wrath would be elsewhere,
  8. Is it personally insulting to say to you have a limited memory when you chose to only remember half the line? Is it a personal insult to say you are snarky butt head? That you chose to half assed remember something you disagree with and throw it out in a snarky comment is not a personal attack on me. I just look at it for what it is. Your eagerly awaiting comment is what it is. Really, you are eagerly awaiting? Wow.
  9. It is called limited memory on your part. The comment was top free agents are not going to sign with small and mid market team that have been at the bottom for two years. That you can only remember less than half the comment and still be a snarky butt head is what it is. Can't expect too much
  10. you can argue one way or the other that the total player payroll limited the Twins in 2012 and before. That debate still goes on. I have not seen a payroll is near the limit in any post for 2013 or beyond.
  11. That argument was used lst year and the year before. Your statement does explain a lot
  12. Denard Span for Shields? Compared to what KC gave up. Get a reality check. What middle infielder who could hit had any sort of range left that was available on the free agent market this year? Go ahead and be snide and tell me who I missed.
  13. I would have been real interested in knowing how much it would take to overpay a mid level talent free agent to go to a last place team two years running. Willingham and the others came to a team that had won the division two years before. There was no reason to think a pitching staff could implode twice..
  14. Did those that continuously bash here do much the same at BYTO and other sites when the Twins were winning?
  15. The point was his comment on hard throwers. You show me a hard-thrower that’s available and I guarantee you we’ll take a good look at him. That, in light of comments made by others on a thread, I thought was interesting. If the draft was a failure who would get the blame but Ryan? If a trade is bad, who gets the blame but Ryan? When they do or don't sign mediocre pitchers as free agents who gets the blame? Ryan makes the decision presumably from data. Who is the one in all of the cases collecting the data, scouts. If there are bad decisions and Ryan is to blame, than he gets the credit when they do well.
  16. Thanks, I needed to reminded I lost my son.
  17. nice article, thanks. Liked this one, too. DL: There is a perception that your organization drafts and develops strike throwers, but not hard throwers. TR: Well you can’t make a guy a hard thrower — more than likely — unless he already possesses arm strength. You can get a young, frail-bodied guy and once he develops and matures and so forth… and we got plenty of hard-throwers. But we do like strike-throwers. There’s no doubt about that. Number one, usually when you get strike-throwers, that means they’ve got pretty good mechanics and pretty good deliveries. That usually means they stay healthy. Everybody likes that. So, if there’s a hard-thrower out there, we like him. We’ve had a lot of success with the Radkes of the world. Santana threw hard. You show me a hard-thrower that’s available and I guarantee you we’ll take a good look at him.
  18. John Gaub, Jack Hanrahan, bring up Cole DeVries and they can market all the Minnesotans on the roster. They are all one of us.
  19. By prospect top list posted here Ryan did good on drafting. By the same lists and comments, Ryan has done well so far on trades. Except for pitchers, people seem to be ok with Carrol as a utility player, Willingham and Doumit. So Ryan must be doing a fair job for the most part by your recommendations
  20. You can give me a dozen starting pitchers on the free agent market who had better peripherals, but your original claim was on speed only. On speed only Correia is average. More than likely the problem isn't when he throws a good fastball. It is when the fastball, or any other pitch for that matter, is less than perfect is the problem.
  21. Everybody but lightfoot seems to know that. Puck got what I meant.
  22. They paid for a guy with a career FIP as a starter somewhere around 4.4. If they paid him to be his average self, that is about the number they were looking for. (to the critics: I know it was a NL number, but to expect a number higher than that like 4.85 is to say they would be better off with Cole DeVries and I would get thrown out of the mythical apologists fan club)
  23. Fangraphs says Correia's fastball sits on average between 90-91. Other than Jackson, velocity wise Correia's speed is about the same as some of the other options available.
  24. Obviously he does. Want to explain why he shouldn't value a win stat?
  25. "Right now, when accounting for standard inflation, we're at '07 payroll. Of course, players payrolls haven't gone up by standard inflation rates..." Nice change of what you originally said. The second comment in this thread of comments/retorts still stands true.
