  1. If you were associating baseball salaries to what is happening in the real world shouldn't you be comparing baseball salary increase to the general rate of growth for other jobs in this economy?
  2. You totally missed wise guy's point. The claim that the payroll is going down is what the Twins have always done is as full of holes as can be. As Ryan built the team. The payroll grew. That is fact. Players indentured servants? Then, as now, the minimum salary and the ability to make more through arbitration makes the thought of a player being indentured rather funny. The indentured servant Delmon Young made over 18 million dollars before getting the opportunity for "fair market value". Personally I think they all should be free agents after 4 years but only able to sign one year contracts.
  3. The A's under Beane have been to the playoffs 6 times, won one series. Same as the Twins. Beane finds better pitchers, Ryan finds hittres and fielders. In the end, Beane didn't find enough good pitchers as his across the bay rival.
  4. Is he the type of quality free agent people keep saying the Twins should be signing?
  5. Then are you abandoning your negativity as Physics Guy posted what could optimally match the 2012 Oakland pitching staff without using the C word? Rather than Meyer, Hendricks would have to step up as would Hermsen or any of the suspects from last year's staff.
  6. Don't tell Phil Rizzuto that.
  7. In 2004 Pavano had a similar k/9 ratio. In 2005 the Yankees signed him for top of the rotation money. In terms of the current Twins now having more cash and signing top (not just any) free agents, show me where the bottom teams have ever signed a top free agent. The term quality would have to be better defined. As used most often here, quality means anyone the Twins did not sign.
  8. Cute but not incorrect. The Buehrle figure came from a reporting of a Ken Rosenthal feed some time ago,
  9. Wouldn't need to, Willingham and Mauer would do it. People have posted how great Hermann is without any naysayers chiming in.
  10. If Blackburn came back and posted a Slowey like 13-7 record by being in the right place at the right time, what would the Twins do? You would have greater odds of getting into Harvard Law School than that happening, but it is not out of the realm of possible. Need a second Twins example, Carlos Siva 2004.
  11. Point is the claim the Twins won't extend players or sign players is without merit. Top of the rotation arms are a scarce commodity. Pavano was that arm in 2010. They extended him. For 2012 they thought they had 2 in Pavano and Liriano. Take a look at where the proven top of the rotation players go. It is not to teams in the current state the Twins are in.
  12. Any player on the roster could be extended. That would include Pelfrey, Willingham and Blackburn along with Morneau . Those that are on the payroll is dropping to nothing bandwagon will not think it is possible because that is their view. Doumit was extended. Hermann could have taken over that role.
  13. Yep, bring the fences in so rather than doubles the players hit home runs. Bring them in far enough so they can put seating in. Hardhats required.
  14. I think the thread got a little sidetracked. Harrison should be kept at third as long as he can progress. I don't see where anyone ever advocated drafting one with this year's first round draft pick. However, if there was a high potential power hitting third baseman out there I don't think you could pass that up if he is the best player on the board..
  15. Buxton, Arcia, Kepler and Benson. Sano or Rosario if they don't work out in the infield. The pipeline to the outfield is pretty full. One less year of team control of Hicks is not going to hurt the future if he is ready now.
  16. He also completely ignores that Boston needs Bogaerts for short, thus making the trade not a good one for Boston
  17. I know what point I was going to make. Your conjecture belongs in a bedpan. In terms of dollars per year by what starters were paid, in 2011 Pavano was well paid. The point you didn't bother to refute was they could have been even cheaper and let him go. In terms of length, I would hazzard a guess that may would say the contract was one year too long. It was fortunate that Marquis contract was only for one year. This is the first year that Ryan has had the need to chase after a free agent pitcher of higher quality. Do you really think that Grienke, Sanchez or Jackson were going to come here? Guthrie resigned with the club he was with. Who else signed a long term contract? No one.
  18. For 2011 he was the 40th best paid starting pitcher. By WAR in 2010 he was the 43. In better searching, I would say that he was paid about where he should have. The point I really got side tracked from was that the Twins could have been cheap and let him go. They had faith in Liriano to develop, Baker, Blackburn, and Slowey (13-6). They put forth the money. The Twins haven't been cheap with signing players within their organization to a contract even though they are eligible to be a free agent
  19. posting just to piss you off? There is a concept. Can you find the gaping hole in your argument?
  20. Not a victim unless that is the way you want to look at it and you obviously do. I did take it as a personal attack to be called trolling. It had nothing to do with the point being made. That some here insist on personal attack rather than focus on the idea is annoying. Would I have been better to just said that was a butt hole remark, the type I expect out of you?
  21. Still can't comment without using vitriol? If I were trolling I would have said that Saunders should come here because he could have Butera as his personal catcher. I could have included Butera would instantly make him a lot better pitcher with his superior game calling ability. I really can't go any further with an example of a trolling type of comment for fear of someone actually not reading very well and thinking I am serious about Butera.
  22. Now wins count towards a player's value? Lost count of the people blasted for saying wins matter on this board. Forgot about the draft pick. That draft pick though was top 15 protected. The Cubs, White Sox,and Mets were all teams that would have been in the top 15 thus pushing the pick to the second round and thus not a top 50 pick. Did the big spendings clubs really worry about the pick when they thought the player would help them win? For a player that was not a superstar, that year it was a very good contract. Consider that two years prior to that contract he was worth 1.5 million. Traded for Yohan Pino. 18 million is great money for that track record.
  23. Perhaps they have. That is why they offer what they do. That is why they pay what they have. bit tongue on Burhle comment
