  1. You are incorrect on BABIP for pitchers in the long run evens out. While BABIP is variable for a pitcher season to season is variable, in larger sample sizes is stabilizes. Johan Santana was around .279 in the first decade of this century Over the same decade, Sidney Ponson was .310 There were many between them
  2. 43 days on the roster for pension, 1 day for lifetime healthcare. The minimum pension is 34k/yr. 10 yrs/100k for pension. For everything else it is pro rated. For some of the fringe players cycled through the Twins, the last few years, their time here was very valuable. Albers, Komatsu Kris Johnson and a few others should be thankful for the Twins. Pension does not kick in until age 62. They still have to find some work.
  3. Smith makes the trade for Pavano because there was more than one under performing Twins starter that year. Besides, that year Pavano was cheap at 1.5 mill/yr. 7 mil the next year while significant, would not have been bank breaking on a winning team.Correia would have probably still been signed because there were far too many holes in that staff. Maybe they take 2 prospects for Revere or not sign Pelfrey. Garza over Pelfrey and the AAA starters would be a significant swing.
  4. His tenure has been longer than Ryan's. His teams have exactly one playoff series win. He is viewed favorably and in no danger of being fired. Should teams get rid of GMs because of only one playoff series win? It seems like an odd standard to use to judge a GM. Beane would be why it would seem odd.
  5. What was done in the past is the past. What was done before his first retirement is ancient history in baseball time. The baseball world has changed since Ryan started. Compensation for free agents, draft slotting, IFA money pools have all changed how teams can do business. In the new environment how will Ryan fare? I am not sure, but I kind of doubt anyone else here has an answer, either.
  6. Ask the same question about Billy Beane if playoff victories are the bar for keeping your job..
  7. You use Garza vs Pavano. Try Garza rather than Blackburn or the bottom of the rotation instead.
  8. Ugh is right. When being criticized for signing free agents, the critics ignore the fact that Ryan was under budget constraints. What you are looking through is a collection of players that a team did not want anymore for a free agent, The type of player people would have liked Ryan to sign would be similar to some of the players he traded away. So the question would be was he better at dumpster diving than other GMs. Nobody really keeps track of that stat. If Zenser has a fallacious argument, so does those that rip Ryan for free agent signings as they ignore the constraint. Signing players with a 3 WAR ceiling, or years removed from elite status is not going to make you a better team. It is stopgap until a younger player develops. The argument that he does not make the team better with free agency does not play as he is limited in what he can sign. Too funny on the Mike Lamb comment. Smith signed Lamb.
  9. Ryan comes across as a pretty straight shooter. Then you remember something about not rebuilding the other year and temper your opinion.
  10. Maybe the should sign Johnson to a minor league contract this winter. He fits the profile.
  11. 2 years and 22 mil for Jackson. 46 million left on Upton. Is Minor the pitcher he was in 2013 or the rest of the time. 24 million is a lot to pay to find out if you have a good pitcher or a mediocre one. Nolasco for Upton and Minor, probably not.
  12. The grievance was settled between Perkins and the Twins. Perkins was still not eligible for super 2. If after discussions and negotiations Perkins thought he was demoted unfairly he could have filed. He may have had a case, but he did not think he would win or he would have continued his grievance. 1 borderline case in how many years?
  13. The fans will know good baseball when they see it. Complaining about the team will go away for about a week after they win a championship and then return. That is some people's nature. Very few teams will be perfect. No team will stay that way. There will always be something to pick at.
  14. How much better would the Twins pitching look with a top 6 defense rather than a bottom 6 defense. Metrics or not, that isn't a very good defense out there.
  15. To put it politely, you may think that if you like. I do not recall players that the Twins have held back to avoid arbitration. I would cynically say someone out there will say they held bag Vargas for arb. The Twins do have a little caution in promoting pitchers but they generally go with the best player possible. Generally. not always
  16. Hermann needs to break the string of Twins hitters mashing in AAA after a demotion only to fizzle at the mlb level
  17. Ibarra went from being blocked by over 30 bullpen pitchers to scrap heap this season.
  18. Every team gets an All Star, even if the person is not deserving. Fans select players, even if they are not deserving. Host team bias comes in. Ii is a unique way to look at things.
  19. There is a manager and a pitching coach in Rochester fully capable of assessing Meyer.'s performance It is a fairly good bet they have an understanding of what Meyerr needs to work on and his performance goals. That is more telling than a minor league stat line available online. The service clock theory kind of goes out the window by July.
  20. I do like this from b-ref's om bwar We present the WAR values with decimal places because this relates the WAR value back to the runs contributed (as one win is about ten runs), but you should not take any full season difference between two players of less than one to two wins to be definitive (especially when the defensive metrics are included).
  21. But they are using it as a precise tool to rank the batters in their listings. They are misusing their own tool.
  22. no one has ever rationally argued that WAR is precise to the decimal point. The reality is that WAR has always been best used for grouping players of similar levels of contribution, not for arguing that a 0.1 WAR difference means that Player X is having a better year than Player Y. No one actually argues for using WAR as a precise tool to measure minuscule differences That is from the article. If decimal places are not valid, why did they include them? Fangraphs own argument on WAR is that it is an inprecise tool only usefull to give you a grouping of players. Click on the leaderboard. There as the batting leader is Alex Gordon Listed there as the number one player. Not even listed by offensive WAR. They go by total WAR. It becomes hard to accept the author's defense that WAR is not precise yeat Fangraphs themselves is using it a a precise tool.
  23. I think that Mauer has been unlucky with where foul tips have caught him. I don't think you could ever call him the toughest player but he resisted moving out from catcher for awhile. It is not like he wanted to take an easier path to paycheck. If not for the concussions I think he would still want to be catching. I therefore do not think you could call him soft. Perhaps using Kirk Gibson as a standard of toughness is appropriate. In Gibson's career he never played every game in a season. 3 times in 16 years he played more than 135. 8 times more than 100. For the one person who might not know, he was an outfielder, not a catcher.
  24. Not to many K Not too many IP so far this year Nothing jumps out to say he is a solution Nothing really says he can't be a mop up guy rather than someone else.
  25. I think the brass expected this type of result from May. It would be why explain whu they waited so long to bring him up.
