  1. The profit is not all that different from 2010 and 2011. I think the drop in revenue droped them from a contributor to a recipient in revenue sharing. That makes the difference in the profit.
  2. There have been a few posts here and there about signing under 30 free agents. Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, Erik O'Flarety, Salty the catcher, Tanaka, and Ryan Webb were the only free agents on ESPN's tracker. The Twins signed one, tried to sign another. Chamberlain, who probably saved his worse outings for the Twins, or Webb would have been ok additions to the bullpen over Guerrier
  3. What is the purpose then of adding talent by spending if not to contend. I have yet to see a positive comment about the spending on Nolasco, Morales, Kubel, Guerrier or Bartlett. I would be amazed to have people not complain about the team if payroll was at 100 million and still lousy.
  4. Never really thought that over time for any team there were that few great players that played the game for any one team. Thinking there must be something funny with this guy's list I went over to fangraphs. Since 1960 for the Twins by Fangraphs, the 53 best batter by WAR is Jim Kaat. Before anyone goes how pathertic, for the Yankess over that time period the equivalent is Danny Tartabull . AJ Ellis for the Dodgers with Manny's short time there at number 54. Placido Polanco for the Cards. Andre Rodgers for the Cubs at 53 and had worse WAR then Kaat. They went by playing time with the team, not career total WAR
  5. It would not be unreasonable to judge the bullpen by 2 numbers. Blown saves and losses. Those are the 2 numbers that tell me they did not do the job.
  6. Livan Hernandez! I knew there was somebody out there older than Branca stil pitching.
  7. At least you did not comment I was looking for pitchers that were in their mid 90s. I wonder if Ralph Branca has anything left in that arm?
  8. If you look back when the Cardinals first got good they had a lot of older players culled from other organizations.
  9. Looking at the Cardinals and how they maintain is different than rebuilding. They have been very good for a long time. In 07 and 08 they were middle of the pack. One year they add Lohse, the next Carpenter, and off they have been ever since. Not all of their trades work out. Like the list of formrt Twins posted earlier, there are probably a lot of players the Cardinals got very little for, or players no cut loose. How they seem to mantain the pitching is primarily drafting arms with command of a mid 90 fastball and add the other pitches. Gonzales is an exception to this. They appear to do a good job of signing free agents. Lohse did not have an ERA under 4 until he was with them. He was not an overly large contract. Carpenter worked out. They did not keep Jackson. Beltran signed for only 2 years. Holliday may slow down a bit, but they certainly have recieved their money's worth out of him with 2 more years to go. The Twins are trying to add mid 90's pitchers and teach them the secondary pitches. The difference is the Cards have the players in the majors in 2-3 years. Maybe they were lucky with Lynn, Miller and Wacha. The Twins did have a bit of good luck drafting former Candian hockey goalies. Luck is possible
  10. My guess would be you do not understand that you don't have the emperical evidence to play a player but you do anyway to develop them. That happened with Koskie, and Hunter. Sometimes you add a player off from a decline year in that you think they have another good year left. They picked up Thome after a couple of down years. It worked well for 2010 IIRC. Empirical evidence has a place, so doesn't thinking a player can do something because they pass your eye test.
  11. On empirical evidence in 2000 he Twins were sure stupid to let that guy playing 3B continue to play there. After 2 years, that guy they had in CF, on empiraclal evidence, should have been moved for someone else. Why did they bother with Thome? Old and washed up. Dozier, Cuddyer. You make the right decisions you are a genius organization. Make the wrong ones, you are fired.
  12. It does not take into account that pitch framing is still not shown to be called evenly across the game . 2 extra strikes in garbage time or low leverage situations is nothing. There was a study done last year in beyond the boxscore that showed on the pitchers that changed teams the WOWY effect for pitchers with a different catcher was .02 difference on the ERA. The predicted value was .04 based on the model you cite. In general the pitch framing is only half as effective as the claim. So yes it is more than zero, but is it significant enough to change outcomes? No studt shows that.
  13. SABR ideas should be put into play in roster construction. When the manager has too much influence that is how you get Delmon Young. WHat SABR ideas should the manager be using I already covered. If there is something you think should be done more I am all eyes as to the explanation of the benefit.
  14. The Dodgers go 3 and out. Mattingly is the fall guy and your scenario just went out the window.
  15. Dependends on what you call SABR theories versus Nick. Any descreption of a pitcher statistics wise in terms of ERA or projected or similar statistics in terms of what shows on a stat sheet is of little use to the manager in preparing the team. Now speed, location types of pitches and their movement, frequency and trends how they throw are of use. If you call those SABR because a lot of that data is collected with technology then you do not have as different of point of view. Similarly for hitters. Owar is of little use other than knowing the batters basic skill level. What pitches (location, speed and type) a batter has trouble with or not, a spray chart would be of use. Again, if the data is collected with technology you might consider it SABR where Nick might not. I have not paid attention to what Dougie Baseball has said. I would think that he does not have that good of access to data on the other team in A ball so he has to be a little more old school in his approach.
  16. Glynn was a scout for the Rays before managing Rochester
  17. Agaim, the assumption is that the pitch framing is likely to happen equally across a game. If it happens less in close games the benefit is less. If fit happens more for strike 1, the effect is less. If it happens more on 3 ball counts, the effect could be the umpire not the framing. If it causes pitchers to throw more out of the zone pitches in the era of pitch counts, the benefit would be less as the guy coming in the 5/6 inning is rarely as good as the starter. The best framer over the worst framer. Debate the benifit by picking having one extreme versus the other. Doumit played 50 games a year at cattcher , Lucroy if uninjured 120-130 for a reason. What is the difference between the best full time catcher and the worse? Even a more fair comparison, what is the difference between the average of the best 3 versus the worse 3.
  18. The skepticism is in the actual effect of pitch framing. The basisi of the numbers used to "prevent" runs assumes it is called evenly throughout the game. Where is the proof?
  19. Because he just interviewed for the job of manager. If he did not want the job why would he intervirew?
  20. Cespedes would have likely been traded sooner or later as Oakland would not have resigned him to the type of contract he will get. Lester will net the A's a draft pick. It will be better than the draft pick they gave up. In the end, it ends up poorly for Oakland as they neither get a deep playoff run nor much in the end out of the trade. Boston was going nowhere this year. They have the resources to extdend Cespedes and sign Lester this off season. Thus for moving down in the draft they could end up with Cespedes to show for their efforts. A big win for the big market team. In the end the small market team lost. Bad for baseball. A good try by Beane. The reward was not there.
  21. I was not aware that Santana and Vargas played o poorly that they showed they did not belong. It is not rushing when they show they belong.
  22. Molitor was brought in partly for defensive help, they shift more. That is what the Angels do more of, shifting. In terms of batting order and production, they seem to be scoring despite the hitting woes of many players. You will not find 1000 PA on the Angels team by hitters who are not hitting like you can for the Twins.
  23. http://www.childrenscancer.org/ The cancer society might be following Brian as they have a story of Zach, who's t-shirt Brian posted today https://twitter.com/BrianDuensing52/status/514438515711836160/photo/1 http://www.childrenscancer.org/main/latest/a_portrait_of_zach_sobiech/
  24. You forgot the bullpen. This year they have gave up 228 runs, good for 7th place. They have the second most IP so far this year, but the Angels in that span have given up 192. Second worse xfip and SIERA
  25. Again, phrased slightly differently. When they signed Suzuki to a contract that should be a clear indication to Pinto what his role will be. He is either going to be a backup player with DH/PH duties and should expect 2-3 games a week behind the plate. He has played games against the White Sox, Cleveland and even the Angels since his call up 2 weeks ago. He is playing in that limited role.. Telling someone there is a player ahead of them on the depth charts is merely that, there is a player playing better than you. That player even played in an All Star game this year. I really don't think not being able to unseat an All Star while working on your skills should destroy a player's confidence. I can see how someone might think that not getting into games means you are not very good, but one does have to look a little broader.
