  1. I've been a proponent of calling the Liriano experiment dead and buried ever since he was traded. Aside from a fluky 2010, his post-TJ career has been pretty damn bad. This is also why our trade return on him was actually a good bit better than I expected and certainly nothing to complain about. On the other hand, if he is as cheap as some are suggesting ($4 million!?), I'd be okay with them throwing a year at him. Maybe a make-good contract would light a fire under his butt finally.
  2. I will give Mr. Ryan his due. He is the biggest con man since P.T. Barnum!!! He is quoted last spring as saying he expected the twins to compete for the central division title. Now as for those incredible central division titles that we did win , remember how strong and mighty our division was. The twins would have been in last place in the eastern division.!! That makes Mr. Ryan a genious? Look at the studs he brought in last year. Jason Marquis. He sure put the fear in opposing batters. A part timer in Doumit? A shortstop who was ready for the baseball nursing home in Carrol? He did get some power from Willingham, but look at his batting average. Pitching and defense win championships!!! Where are they? We had the highest era in the al. we were tied for last in home runs in the al. We had a below average team batting average in the al. I almost forgot about our Japanese star, but then his performance was quite forgetable. Do I need to go on any further about Mr. Ryans genius? You suck at life.
  3. I'm thankful for Joe Mauer's .410 OBP, and the fact that he reinserted himself into the batting race after a very forgettable 2011.
  4. Which is fine, I don't think anyone is saying that we should completely tank next year but it's being interpreted that way. I think what most people mean is not to overcommitt assets with the view of competing in 2013. This is exactly true. I feel like an acknowledgment that the Twins, if they follow the get-younger plan, will probably take some serious lumps is just common sense. It doesn't mean that anybody has said that they shouldn't care about 2013/14, or that they don't want to win in 2013/14, or that they're completely giving up on those seasons, etc. It's just being misinterpreted that way. On the other hand, if it turns out that some of our top minor-league assets are ready to rip it up in the majors ala Mike Trout, then who's really advocating punting on the season?
  5. I'd be interested. Hell, he beat us.
  6. Let him have his $8 million or so per year. Three years? Hells no.
  7. He said "get younger," not use our players and only our players. We can trade for, claim, or acquire pitchers, but they shouldn't be over the hill innings eaters on the downslope. Clearly, if your system has only outfielders, something must be done. That has nothing at all to do with getting younger and exploiting an opportunity. Read. Understand. Post.
  8. I think this is an interesting post, and an interesting idea. I think you're on to something that many of the impatient people here aren't really picking up on. Take the bold-moving Blue Jays this year. They're seeing that the Yankees are old and getting worse, the Red Sox completely cleaned house, the Orioles are lucky like you wouldn't believe, and the Rays are always shedding payroll. For them, it's now or never. Similar to the Tigers last year - they saw a really bad AL Central with a 99-loss Twins team, a Cleveland team that was projected to be even worse than the Twins, a Sux team that was shaky at best, and the Royals are just the Royals. The saw an opportunity and they took it. I think you might be right that the Twins' opportunity is later on. It's going to be tough to compete with the Tigers until age, payroll, and Price Fielder's massive fat rolls catch up to them. I'm not advocating completely punting on the 13 and/or 14 season, because I think shrewd moves and a little luck could make for a surprising run. But I like the idea of getting younger.
  9. 8!? That seems unnecessary...
  10. God, there's so much impatience in this thread. I'd prefer something real to speculation, but maybe that's just me.
  11. Not very, it seems. I think he's going into Ft. Meyers next year - maybe New Britain. He's never been above Low-A.
  12. The puns will be knee-high by July.
  13. You're absolutely not crazy. In my limited research, it seems as though roughly 10% of draftees see the majors, but it's something like 65% of first-rounders. Way more likely, but still a huge failure rate. I think the balance when ranking prospects is between ceiling and likelihood. When you're in rookie ball your likelihood is pretty low regardless of your ceiling. If you're already in AAA your likelihood is way higher, even though your ceiling may be a bench player. In the end, I'd be inclined to weight likelihood far more highly than "scouts" (mainly amateur rankers on the internet) have a tendency to do, especially when you're in the lowest levels of the minors. I haven't publicly published my personal rankings, but I'd have Buxton lower than Sano, Hicks, Rosario, and Arcia for the simple reason that he hasn't done a damn thing yet. If he plays as advertised through A-AA-AAA, then we'll rank him as the top prospect for sure.
  14. Wait, you don't think they'll bring back Brennan Boesch? A guy like that is going to get another shot, his poor performance in '12 notwithstanding. (Even if he did go to that hellhole called UC Berkeley.)
  15. What would you say its DORP is? fDORP or bDORP? Well done, guys. I lulz'd.
  16. Okay, legit question here. Just because Morneau is Canadian doesn't necessarily mean that he's some sort of national hero, does it? I mean he's from British Columbia, and here we are suggesting Toronto as if it's the same thing. They're about as far apart as Seattle and New York. Is the "Canadian thing" really that important?
  17. Oh come on. Now you're just being ridiculous. Posting logical arguments on a message board. What's wrong with you!?
  18. Do you think the Twins are really interested to get Buerhle and his big contract? I dont think they really are. They're going to have to spend money on somebody or they're going to end up with nobody. I don't like Buerhle's contract (hate it, actually) but if you can move Morneau's $14m in trade for it, that's a deal you need to consider. I agree. And as much as I'd rather have Josh Johnson, I just don't think one year from him is going to make that big a difference. And on top that, if anyone is going to age well, it's probably Buerhle. The guy shows no signs of slowing down.
  19. This isn't Terry Ryan's first offseason with the new-look Twins. Or did someone else sign Willingham, Doumit and Carroll last winter? Yeah, that's my bad. But I do think that my point still stands.
  20. I think you absolutely try to reload and compete in a crappy division. If the Tigers can make it to the WS, the Twins could with something like 3 or 4 new pieces (mostly pitchers). The other option, I think, requires that you rush too many prospects. Attempting to reload solves two problems. 1) You don't punt on this season. 2) You delay rushing prospects to the majors and save some money over the long term.
  21. That depends of what you think they could get for Willingham. I would argue that Willingham had a career year and isn't likely to repeat it. If you can get a young middle of the rotation starter for Willingham and sign Hunter to replace him, I say go for it. Hunter's WAR last three years: 2.7, 3.4, 5.5. Willingham's: 2.6, 2.1, 2.9. Hunter doesn't suck in the OF and can still hit. If they can sign Hunter for 8-10M a year, it costs a net of 1-3M a year and potentially gains a pitcher in the process that the Twins don't seem to be willing to sign in FA (at least if the Baker deal is any indication - I know it's early yet). I'll repeat, I don't see this happening in the slightest, but I think it would improve the team. This is a good point, but it seems like there are too many moving parts to be plausible. Which isn't to say that I wouldn't like to see it happen.
  22. Holy crap. Is 30 that old? If so, I'm pretty much screwed, because I haven't even reached AA yet. Seriously though, if the cost is reasonable, I'd be into it.
  23. You literally just posted in the other thread. How is this one necessary? Don't be a dick, dude.
  24. What is "proven" in the context of a $40 million payroll and the Metrodome is not proven when we're talking about a $90 million payroll at Target Field. Let's not forget that this is Terry Ryan's first offseason with the new-look Twins. A little patience, please.
