  1. I agree with this. If Willingham can do it and not embarrass himself, Parmelee can. Just get the bat in the lineup. That's what he's there for.
  2. Not as dramatic, but Adam Dunn was OPSing about 900 with the Nats in 2010. He then went to the Sux and went down to about 550.
  3. I got about as far as the fishhook in the eye part, threw up in my mouth a little, and stopped reading. I'm glad there are doctors in the world, because clearly I can't be one of them. But good for him not letting his eye stop him.
  4. I get your frustration with the topic; I get frustrated with the proliferation of Fire Gardenhire posts. But I don't think it's something that should just be dropped. After all, it is a developing situation. As Slama's ERA drops from 1 to .9 to .8 to .7 to .6 to .59, and Jeff Gray's home runs allowed go from 7 to 8 to 9 to 10, I think it's absolutely true that the issue must be revisited. Although perhaps this is less about Anthony Slama per se than it is about Jeff Gray...
  5. I'm not "convinced" he's the 3B of the future. I am optimistic though - I think it will happen. He's a good player, and he can really square up on the ball. Add in Target Field's almost surprising friendliness to right-handers of his ilk, and I think he has a solid future. On top of that, add in the fact that he can play shortstop and outfield in a pinch, and I think that, worst case, if he's not the 3B of the future, he'll stick on the roster for a long while. Of course, he's got to stay healthy.
  6. Every player is a risk, but Buchholz is only 27, and he's been above average his entire career. (This year, he's about average, but that's the aberration.) Depending on what the Sox would require, I'd jump at the chance to get Buchholz's contract. Given the Twins' need for pitching, it would be a great get. Of course, it seems like it's a moot point. And Jon Lester is nowhere near the same thing.
  7. It may not be the Twins' fault that they missed out on this deal. Morneau probably went on waivers, but the Dodgers were likely blocked by another team. Of course, there's no way to know this for sure. Maybe Terry Ryan just didn't like what the Dodgers had on offer.
  8. I think it's all relative. The Twins are obviously capable of producing runs, and they have a 1B waiting in the wings. What they don't have (at all) is pitching. So it's not that Morneau isn't worth signing at 3 for 7; it's just that he isn't worth signing at 3 for 7 for the Twins. His is not a position of need. Other teams might jump at that deal.
  9. It applies to arbitration cases but it also applies contract extensions (at least under the old CBA). Can anybody with a solid grasp of the new CBA clarify this for us? Would we be allowed to offer Morneau, say, half of what he makes now?
  10. Of course it's bull****, but apparently these are the rules in today's MLB. So I'm not surprised. I would like to echo the comments above and say that I respect him for doing it. And while I'm glad Hamilton didn't actually get drilled in the noggin, it's a great message to send - we're not going to screw around if you throw at our catcher. Of course, I don't think it's going to hurt the Twins' post-season chances much now that Diamond will have to sit out his next turn. Maybe if they were in the race, he should have thrown at Hamilton's ribs. What I wonder is what made Oswalt go headhunting against Mauer?
  11. Ding ding ding! I just looked at some of the other teams. The avocado pickers, the tomato pickers, the shrimp fishermen... Interesting league.
  12. Sonora Naranjeros? What is that, like the "orange pickers" or something?
  13. That guy's terrible! He can't even get his ERA over 1! Wait, how does ERA work?
  14. I hate that I agree with this, because I love Morneau. But business-wise, this is what seems to make sense. I'd love to think that we could get a Morneau extension for Willingham money, but first off, I don't think it would be allowed with the new CBA, and secondly, I think it would make more sense not to rush it so that we can at least listen to offers at the 2013 trade deadline.
  15. I voted for Butera. Mauer is just too important to the future to screw around with. But with Butera, it could be a lot of fun. Of course, would we think it was so much fun after a 5 error game?
  16. Except by Twins fans.... I don't think even Johnny Cochrane could make that argument with a straight face, and I'm talking about keeping a straight face now, in his current state of embalmment. What a surprise you chimed in. Oh wait, that's the only thing you ever talk about. Ever.
  17. After contrasting the Twins' deal with the Padres' in another thread, I'd probably agree. We're not a huge media market, but there's no way that San Diego is nearly twice our size.
  18. His last chance? He's barely had a chance yet. A 23 yo that has had a 2 ERA the whole year in AAA, and you want it to be his last chance? I don't understand this. That's because it makes absolutely no sense. Guys, guys, guys. The Twins have awesome pitchers coming out of their butthole. Let's absolutely cut a guy tearing up AAA at 23.
  19. Seems like that would be a very useful stat. Certainly more useful than WHIP; kind of like a pitchers' version of wOBA. I imagine it would correlate well to the hit vs. run yield rate (e.g. one team getting 5 hits may yield 5 runs, whereas another getting 5 hits may yield 1 run). That sort of stat might finally put the vague concept of "clutch" hitting to rest.
  20. Yep. Perspective. Unless you're the Yankees, you're not winning with free agency. Free agency adds a piece here and there to talent you developed. The miss rate is huge, but not investing in it means languishing.
  21. Maybe somebody who knows for sure can fill me in, but here's a possibility. The Twins signed their TV deal several years back, whereas the Padres just signed theirs recently. Media people have been coming around to the idea that the only thing in television that's safe from the proliferation of the DVR, Netflix, Hulu, etc. paradigm is live sports. Thus, the only way to ensure that people see your commercial is to place it in a sports game. Given that, TV deals for all sports have absolutely skyrocketed over the last few years. These days, it's become the sine qua non of professional sports. It could be that the Twins just have an outdated deal.
  22. I was at that game. Great seats, above the home dugout. Here are some pictures that I took: http://walkoffgame.shutterfly.com/4
  23. I also agree with the idea that there's no urgency in trading either Morneau or Parmelee. Not through waivers, not this offseason, probably not even next offseason, but that depends on whether the Twins will actually be good next year (probably not). Given the fact that our 1B options (Mauer, Morneau) have had serious health issues, and our DH options (Willingham, Doumit, Morneau) have had serious health issues, statistical probability tells us that it's good to have an insurance policy in place. That insurance policy is named Parmelee.
