  1. I finally made it out there. I took a picture that I can post later when I'm not on my phone, but the plaque reads: " Kent Hrbek Minnesota Twins 1981 - 1994 Kent Hrbek to his wife Jeanie Hrbek, before the start of the 1987 playoffs "I don't want to win the World Series for me, but for all of the fans of Twins baseball." "
  2. Are they looking for new on-air talent? I'm available.
  3. It says: "Yeah, I'll have a number three with cheese, onion rings, and a chocolate shake. Wait, what? What's this for again?" -Kent Hrbek Okay, so I haven't made it out there yet. Sorry, I've been busy.
  4. I don't think you realize what you just did there. You negated yourself in exactly the way that those who pay attention have already understood: "Knoblauch moved more quickly than the "modern era" Twins. Kinda like Joe Mauer." ...wait, what? Not to be a dick, but this whole premise is stupid because you fail to acknowledge the simple and obvious fact that every single player is different. And that's all there is to it.
  5. I'll try to get out there tomorrow. I'm headed out to the 'burbs in a few minutes or I'd do it right now. (I live about 5 blocks from the stadium.)
  6. I've been on the Dempster train for a while now, but I wouldn't want to give him 3 years. He's old enough as it is. Bring him in by all means, but see if you can do it with fewer years. If that means higher dollars now, then so be it.
  7. Would it be fair to say that maybe Sano would be a better trade piece than Hicks given where he is in the system? Hicks is nearly major-league ready; some have suggested that it may happen in 2013. Sano just finished up a Beloit, and although he could get through the rest of the system quickly, there are some serious question marks on defense and hitting breaking balls that suggest that he may simply need more time. The other piece is the fact that projecting players is really hard. How many "once in a generation" talents have become nothing more than serviceable players once they finally hit the bigs? All things equal, I'd prefer to gamble on the guy who's closer to the major leagues. If Bauer and Sano are in the same prospect class, but Bauer is knocking on the door while Sano is Wisconsin, I'd be inclined to take Bauer. That's even outside the fact that our system is bereft of pitching.
  8. You're absolutely right about this. Of course, none of the cynics here would give the GM or the ownership the benefit of the doubt if they tried it, but that's neither here nor there. Sometimes you've got to go all in to win. Counterintuitively, sometimes, you've got to spend to less with your good players if they're not ready for the final push to the summit.
  9. Most of my points have already been made. 1) He's defensively pretty bad and needs seasoning. 2) He strikes out too much and needs to work on hitting certain pitches. 3) If we start his service clock when both he and the Twins are going to do nothing but suck, we're wasting time that's under team control. One thing that bugs me is this constantly repeated idea that the Twins don't promote their minor league players fast enough. Usually the evidence is one of two things: a comparison to a non-comparable player (as here), or treating unrepresentative players as typical of the system. Every player is different. I think many people here would be surprised at how alike minor league systems and promotions are.
  10. Me too. I would have guessed it was all anecdotal, but there you go.
  11. Bauer is going to cost a hefty package of prospects, plus I'm not so sure they would want Span or Willingham even since they have a pretty loadeded OF with Parra. If they didn't want Span or whatever, I would offer them Sano+more in a heartbeat. Sano+, eh? Trades like this hardly ever happen, am I right? All things equal, I'd rather have a top pitcher than a top hitter, and Bauer is way closer to the majors. Do you think Sano for Bauer straight up would work?
  12. There is an easy fix to this. Due to Revere's extreme contact proficiency,it is more beneficial for him to simply stop swinging when he gets ahead in the count, and avoid terminating his at-bat prematurely by putting a ball in play. Specifically if he avoided swinging on all 2-0, 3-0, and 3-1 counts, I believe he could raise his OBP .040 or .050 points or more overnight. I made some rough calculations to arrive at that conclusion here: How many such counts did he have? Since he has no power, I can't believe he was able to build too many such hitter-friendly counts. 233 counts total in 1064 PAs. Impressive. Just off the top of your head, how many 1-2 counts did Joe Mauer have in innings 3 and 4 in the months of May through July?
  13. Interesting take. I hadn't heard this side of things, although I don't read much about ball outside the Twins. Hellickson, as far I had always known, was very clearly a potential #1. I think this is also pretty interesting. After all, the Rays aren't known for making dumb trades, are they?
  14. I wouldn't worry about it. See, at that rate, in 32 years, the Twins will be undefeated. 2044 Twins, baby!
  15. Literacy would be a plus. Come back when you're done with the second grade.
  16. What??????????????? Don't feed the trolls.
  17. Good one. 2018, Miguel Sano blasts 45 home runs.
  18. Ha! Oh sorry, was that a joke?
  19. depends on who takes over for the 3 stooges and when ...could be another 70s decade for us ,if jipppy pohlad doesnt cut bait and start fishin You're like a broken record. You're like Peter Griffin playing "Surfin' Bird." Just shut up with that schtick already. And by the way, I think Paul Pleiss is right. We're not contending very soon, so stay away from the high-dollar guys, start winning a bit more each year, and build from your farm system up.
  20. I agree. Sure he's not that great, but nor are we paying him like a superstar. And if Coors Field is the source of some of his issues, as it may well be, this could end up working out in our favor. This is a solid, very low-risk signing. The Jeff Gray comparison doesn't seem terribly apt to me.
  21. I find this line of reasoning totally unconvincing. Occam's razor. Is it more likely that the Twins valued Santana at, not $12 million, but say $10 million? Or is it more likely that the Twins are putting on an elaborate dog and pony show, gambling tens of millions of dollars on players that they don't want, all for the PR impact on the very few hardcore fans who are still paying attention in November?
  22. I want to believe that, but public pressure and budget availability leave me a bit worried. He has a 15 year track record of not making that move. I wouldn't worry about it too much. In fact, JR has proven incredibly adept at giving up absolutely nothing and getting something in return for it. Has any player he traded turned out to be a good acquisition for the receiving team? aj? hardy? Remember that AJ Pierzynski was sent to San Francisco for only one year. He did okay, but he was far better with the Sux, who signed him in free agency. Also, we got Nathan, Liriano, and a scrub (Boof) in that trade as well as made room for Mauer. I'd do that again every day and twice on Sunday. And Hardy was traded by Bill Smith.
  23. If they took Parmelee and $20 million, I would certainly hope nothing else would be needed. I'm assuming this wouldn't be a deal the Twins would do unless it's actually a deal that primarily gives the Marlins salary relief. And the Twins would be a great trading partner in that case, because it's not like the Marlins would be dealing him to a conference or league competitor.
  24. Hindsight is 20/20. I'm sure there were more than a few here (maybe with paper bags over their heads now) who were fine with jettisoning the fragile Hardy for the next big thing from Japan. Besides, to reiterate, Gold Gloves are kind of stupid. Mike Trout didn't win one? That pretty much says it all.
