  1. Good call, Captain Hindsight! Say, what do you think about that Garza for Young swap? Fill us in.
  2. I agree with this. Also, Hendriks should start all year.
  3. I get that feeling too. I think realistically, he'll be shopped at the deadline, but if comes back huge and is willing to sign an extension to keep him in Minnesota, then you transition him to DH and backup-1B over the next 3 to 4 years, and once Willingham is traded or a free agent, you've got a solid DH without having to move Parmelee.
  4. Nope. Not unless the choice was Twins or stop playing baseball. Let's face it, both sides lit the bridge on fire.
  5. This is pretty much what I'm saying, yes.
  6. I think you've misinterpreted me, perhaps because I left out the part about how (and this is my opinion, so feel free to discount) Deduno, Devries, et al. pitched above their long-term ability last year. In the small sample size we had from them, they actually did pretty well. Throw them out there next year for 30 starts? It'll be a complete and total disaster. That is what makes the team worse. What makes the team not worse is signing Correia, who is perfectly capable of pitching consistently at the 4.5/5.0 ERA level. Correia keeps the team at the 90-100 loss threshold. Trotting out Deduno, Devries, and Duensing for 90 starts next year puts us at 110 losses minimum. That's an important distinction.
  7. If Correia can sit between 4.5 and 5.0 on the ERA scale, which I think is reasonably likely, he doesn't make the team worse. If we give starts to Cole DeVries, who is a ticking time bomb, it's only a matter of time before his ERA balloons, maybe out to 6, 7, or 8. (Think Blackburn last year, or Marquis.) If we give starts to Sam Deduno, the walks will catch up to him. His SSS performance last year isn't representative to what he can do longer-term, and Correia is certainly an upgrade. If we keep giving starts to Deunsing, who admittedly is quite competent out of the pen, we can expect many more 5-run fourth innings. If we keep giving starts to Swarzak, see above. I'll take the likely possibility of an ERA between 4.5 and 5.0 over any of the other pitchers listed. Wouldn't you?
  8. He's being realistic, really. Think about some of the pitchers that were "guaranteed" to help over the past several years. Think the Mets GM, after getting Santana, would have gone back and said some platitude like there's-no-guarantees-in-baseball if he could? I've said it before, and I might as well say it again. I doubt Correia makes the rotation much better. But I also doubt he makes it any worse, and that's an important distinction.
  9. He wants to play for a contender and yet the only teams he's listed as being linked to are the Twins, Royals, Brewers, Cubs, and Padres? Does he know what a "contender" is?
  10. I would consider it because he's young, and with a longer-term deal, he would be more than just a bridge to the next set of pitching prospects; instead, he could actually provide some veteran leadership while Meyer and May get acquainted with the league (heck, even Gibson, Hendriks, and possibly even Wimmers too).
  11. Going to go out on a limb and say yes. I don't like the price tag one bit, but it seems as though that's what it takes to get a guy like that. And if he doesn't require a 3rd year, then all the better. I think he'll be effective for another couple years.
  12. All it took was a million and a half more than what he turned down earlier? WTF? I'd have given him that...
  13. Think maybe this had something to do with the tragic starting rotation? I wonder whether, if Blackburn could have gotten out of the third inning a time or two, we wouldn't have had to trot out Jeff Gray every other day?
  14. Already been mentioned, but that 2008 tiebreaker was pretty heartbreaking. Blackburn actually pitched a hell of a game there; Thome home run was the deciding factor.
  15. Can we do another dozen questions with his 'stache? Q: "What was it like being on your first porn set?" A: "Aw man, it was unreal. There was this one chick...."
  16. This is very well-reasoned, and I appreciate that amid all of the negative hyperbole. Btw, I'm not going to defend the signing either. I think the second year is pretty ridiculous. But when we're constantly ripping on the GM for not just going out and throwing money at pitchers, and then ripping on him for throwing money at a pitcher, things seem a little skewed to me. In any case, I can't see how this makes the Twins better. But I can't see how it would make them worse either. And given the circumstances, I find that to be an important distinction, seeing as Blackburn, Walters, Deduno, and Devries would indeed make the team worse. Maybe this is what it costs to tread water in this free agency year?
  17. Mr. Rosterman, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points. And may God have mercy on your soul.
  18. What do you expect? Dave St. Peter calls a press conference and says "Hey, you know that year 2013? Yeah, **** that noise." Not gonna happen.
  19. Awesome. Guy has the talent to be a perennial all-star. All the more reason to leave him in the minors until we get an extra year of control. Sorry, that's the biz.
  20. That's pretty hard. I went with Worley because he is a year younger than Diamond and five years pushes these guys to 30+, and because Gibson is going to get a late start this year. If Gibson were Ok-ed for 175+ innings this year, I would have voted for him. Pretty much the reason I went with Worley too. Gibson won't break camp with the Twins (and shouldn't if they're going to limit his innings), and Diamond is due for some regression. Don't get me wrong, I have very high hopes for Gibson, and I'm a huge Diamond supporter, but life doesn't cooperate sometimes. Also, I feel like the two prospects, Meyer and May, even if they pan out, won't have enough innings to overcome Worley or Diamond in the next five years. Or likely even Gibson, for that matter.
  21. I concur, only the most cynical believe that the organization doesn't have a plan beyond lining their pockets. The club could definitely be more transparent and consistent in communicating what that plan is to the fan base, but just because they don't doesn't mean there isn't one. I'd rather believe the team is carefully considering the best way to move forward, either pay a boatload of money for some good (not great) help now or keep stockpiling the cupboard and spend the money when those players graduate on some key veteran pieces. I'm willing to accept I could be totally wrong but because I don't know any better than anyone else, I prefer the wait and see approach. The Bilderbergs run the World Government, not the Trilateral Commission, no wait there the same thing,or are they? Conspiracy indeed. +1 Those Bilderbergs, man. They're like the modern-day Templars. And don't get me started on those damn Masons!
  22. I don't disagree with you, JB Iowa, and I as a fan and taxpayer would like some statement to the effect of "yes, our payroll is low now, but just wait and see what happens when our minor league core gets really good in 2015/16." But I strongly disagree with those who claim that they "know" that the Pohlads are just pocketing the money, or that because they used to have a low payroll back in the completely different and not-all-that-far-behind-us Metrodome years, they "must" be doing the same things now. I cannot imagine that the entire front office and ownership of the Twins isn't adapting to the changing situation in major league baseball and the changing Twins' situation in particular. Indeed, maybe it's just smart business to have a low payroll now when expectations are at their bottom and to overspend later when we're only a piece or two away. Unless there's some sort of conspiracy theory. Do we at TD believe the Trilateral Commission runs the world government, too?
  23. Ryan Dempster has turned down a 2 year, $25 million offer from the Red Sox that would have paid him $12.5 million per year, according to ESPN: http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/8725821/ryan-dempster-rejects-two-year-25m-offer-boston-red-sox-source-says According to the story, he fielded an even larger 2 year, $26 million offer from the Royals but turned that down too. Apparently he is really pushing hard for that third year. Maybe he thinks this will be his last contract? So, TwinsDaily, would you give him three years? Would you go to, say, 3 and $30 million? 3 and $33 million? Or if the years are the issue, would you take a pass?
  24. I honestly think Mastroianni is being a bit undervalued here. Do we want him as the everyday centerfielder? Not really. Will we completely implode if we put him there until June? Heck no. You definitely don't throw Hicks into the lineup on day one. It's a bad business decision, and I think it would end up being a bad development decision. I will say, however, that I am intrigued by the idea of Joe Benson if he's healthy. I agree with an above poster who said that when he's healthy, he screams top prospect. If he's back from him multiple injuries of last year, I'd bet that he could compete for an outfield spot this year.
