  1. As I realize how this can be construed and wish to avoid such controversy, I'm going to clarify. I'm not attacking you or your belief system. What I am saying is that the Catholic Church is an entirely top-down, teleologically oriented institution. It brooks no opposition. The things you've claimed that your "Catholic" church allows leads me to believe that it has simply misappropriated the name. Ultimately, the doctrine of the real, actual Catholic Church comes straight from the Bishop of Rome. (Tu es Petrus. The Vicar of Christ on Earth. Etc.) Go ask the pope whether allowing priests to marry is okay within the Catholic Church. When you come back with a solid and emphatic "no," you might consider whether you're actually Catholic or you're just calling yourself that. And on that completely-unrelated-to-baseball note, I'm out.
  2. That's clearly not a Catholic church. If I start a sandlot baseball team and call myself the Minnesota Twins, am I actually the Minnesota Twins? Doctrine requires full adherence. That's why it's doctrine...
  3. I doubt that replacing "gay" with "Mexican" would be any more or less idiotic, and he still has a right to his opinion. In fact, I'm not sure that that changes the analysis at all. I think (and this is my personal opinion, so feel free to jump down my throat and call me a horrible bigot) that we should just kind of shake our heads and move on. This world is largely populated by idiots, and that's made manifest in constant and varying ways. Instead, we've taken this as an opportunity to engage in a holier-than-thou circle jerk. Yeah, I disagree with him. That doesn't make me special.
  4. This is true. A 2012-Orioles-like team is highly likely to show up next year, competing out of nowhere at the deadline. Hell, even the Indians were "contenders" in June. The flip side of the coin, though, is that the risk/reward equation disfavors the Twins if either gets off to a sluggish start and can't be flipped, or if either gets injured and just becomes deadweight. This is sort of the equivalent of flipping houses. You buy not because you want to live in it but to make a quick buck. Sometimes it works and you make out like a bandit, but if it falls through your leverage quickly leads to a total loss. I'm of the old school, I guess. If you don't want to own it, don't buy it.
  5. You might also consider thickening your skin. Just as a precaution.
  6. Great to hear this. Let's not forget how good he was in the second half of last season.
  7. That's not true. For example, there are 20 wedges on a dart board. If you threw 20 darts at it randomly, would you really expect to hit all 20 wedges? Randomness usually doesn't look random.
  8. Duly noted. I shouldn't be feeding the trolls anyway.
  9. So we won't hear from you till 2014? Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
  10. It's been said that "if 2/$10m is supposedly reasonable for Correia, how is 2/$15m NOT reasonable for Marcum?" Good point. But it misses the reverse. If you find that 2/$10m is an absolutely terrible deal for Correia (as it seems that everyone does), how is 2/$15 million not a terrible deal for Marcum? Two wrongs don't make a right. The Twins already overpaid for average pitching. I'm okay with their not doing it twice.
  11. $7 million for each of 2 years is a little much for Liriano, period. But expanding on your point, I'm not sure he'd be that great as a reliever. A guy with that kind of control problem and inconsistency could be way more dangerous out of the pen than you think.
  12. Oh yeah, Kickstart my heart, Give it a start, Oh, yeah, baby!
  13. He may have left money on the table seeing the Twins as a place where he is likely to be a starter for the entirety of his contract, and thus able to secure a better contract in 2015 than if he were shunted to the bullpen. If he went to a team that offered him more money but would have likely used him out of the bullpen much of the time due to prospects knocking on the door or perhaps an abundance of other #4/5 type guys, his next contract, if any, might have been substantially smaller. The Twins clearly don't have much in the way of pitching competition right now, and the chance Correia ends up not being a starter is pretty small. Just a guess.
  14. It is, except when it's not. Then it isn't. But it might have been.
  15. Your analogy is off because you seem to be missing the asymmetry. If I'm betting $1, I will take 10-1 odds when the payoff is $10 before I'll take 2-1 odds when the payoff is $1. One is more likely, but the other is far preferable.
  16. I love the low-risk, high-reward thing. On a minor league contract, this guy is basically cost-free.
  17. +1 Dodged a bullet there...
  18. He was a right fielder, and he only had 8 effective seasons, after which injuries made him more or less average. Mauer's stats actually look pretty similar to Oliva's right up until his 1971 season. If Mauer has a few more of those types of seasons, he's a mortal lock. He might already be, because of the catcher advantage. And of course, I think Tony Oliva should have gotten more consideration for the hall anyway. But I'm a homer, and I know it.
  19. Also, Johnny Bench's career OPS+ was 126. And he's kinda the benchmark for catchers. (I know, terrible pun.)
  20. Nice to have this kind of perspective.
  21. My car is older than I am.
  22. I just got caught in a wikipedia tornado.
  23. Actually, we've reached the point where debates about epistemological skepticism are being applied to the free agent market. I can't tell if that's better or worse. I hate the offseason. I'm going back to the thread about sexy GMs.
