  1. I would hate to see Morneau gone, although I have long assumed that we would at some point either this offseason or, more likely, at the deadline. Then again, without knowing what they might bring back, I'm completely ambivalent. Aside from Mauer, I don't think anyone on this team is untouchable.
  2. Good question. Do any of our minor league mavens know anything about this guy?
  3. Remember 2 weeks ago when so many were saying "Why hasn't Terry Ryan DONE anything yet? Derp." Ha.
  4. ESPN called it for Vance Worley AND Trevor May! http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8720706/philadelphia-phillies-get-ben-revere-minnesota-twins-play-cf Helluva return! Props to twinstalker, btw.
  5. Peavy? I'm willing to bet he meant Grienke.
  6. Since we're talking about 3B, what's the status on Deibinson Romero? I know he's also a righty, and so not a candidate for a platoon, per se, but if I recall correctly he OPSed like 800 in New Britain last year. Is he considered competition? He's not on the 40 man. Is he filler or a major league prospect?
  7. I absolutely agree with this. I don't think signing him to multiple years is a recipe for disaster unless you know for a fact that he'll get injured. It's absolutely a gamble with his health history, and it may very well not pan out, but the Twins are a position right now that they have to roll the dice. They have no real choice in the matter. I would guess that something like 2 years at $8m and $10m with a (vesting?) option for a 3rd at $12 would get him. It's on the high side, but in this free agent market, what isn't?
  8. The Orioles are already mostly former Twins, do we really need to be sending more over there?
  9. If we have to wait till 2014, 2015 (two, three seasons) and he's only a #4 pitcher, we got straight up robbed. You really think there's any chance he debuts in 2013? Especially given the Twins' M.O. of slowly advancing prospects? I think 2014's a pretty good bet but 2015 strikes me as more likely than 2013. Will I be disappointed if Meyer ends up only a #4? Absolutely. But I don't think two years of Span, even with his team-friendly contract, was going to draw a return much larger than that in an MLB-ready player, anyway. Nope, I absolutely don't...I've been saying 2015 myself...but if he makes it, and I absolutely believe he will, I don't think he'll just be a number 4 2015 is the most realistic DOA. Would love to see some combination of Johnson and Verlander from the new Staff Ace. To go with Gibson, Diamond, Wimmers and Berrios on the fast-track in June of that year to replace the latest Jason Marquis flop. We can still hope, can't we? DOA? Dead on arrival? God I hope not. Kidding aside, I think we might look for him in 2014. Maybe optimistic, but if he progresses as he should, it could happen.
  10. The production stats already factor in his speed to an extent (the OPS would be lower with the triples as doubles, some of the doubles as singles, and a handful of the singles as outs), his SB/CS isn't quite as favorable as Revere's, and I'm not convinced his other baserunning is that much of an advantage over someone like Florimon - he should not be compared to Willingham on the basepaths to gauge his value. Morover, if we were to trade even a non-top-ten prospect, I would hope for more than someone we can "survive" with. I really think the Dodgers have concluded that Gordon's value will decline to the point he's waiver-wire fodder in couple of years, and are trying to salvage anything better than that now. Or maybe that Hanley Ramirez is simply better? I doubt they have any inclination to waste that investment.
  11. I would be careful making any judgements using stats. He was a college pitcher with an upper 90's fastball playing in A ball. he could have been missing his spots by a mile but still getting swings because he was flat out better than the competition. It wouldn't surprise me if the walks rose quite a bit as he moves up in the minors. FWIW - I like Meyer more everyday and I'm going to try not to get carried away but I also can't wait to see what he does in AA and hopefully AAA this season. Would you be surprised at all if he didn't start in AA this year? I'm not sure I would. High-A would be a distinct possibility to start. However, I would be shocked if he saw no time at AA at all. (Barring injury, of course.)
  12. Exactly.. Completely wrong, actually. There is a finite amount of money available for the Twins to spend on payroll, and that doesn't just fluctuate year to year. Saving one year may mean spending another year. To say that you know exactly what the Twins' payroll plans are for the coming several years is just wrong. You don't. Cool, so we should expect the Twins to spend that saved 18M the saved last year from 2011 payroll? Twins spent 112M in 2011, 94M in 2012, so will they A: not only got back to 112M, but add an additional 1*M they saved? Or B: just go up to 112 again? Or is it neither? The argument wasn't about "should," it was about "does." The fact is that you don't know what management does with it. Their plans are not public. But to answer your alternate question, they should invest it in the future. Whether that means this coming year or in 2015, I don't particularly care, as long as the investments made are wise.
  13. I am shocked, shocked! to find that gambling is going on in here. Your winnings, sir.

  15. Great post. Funny how Terry Ryan was derided for calling the free agent market thin when according to the posters here there aren't any pitchers good enough to play for us. Don't get me wrong, I think the asking prices on some of these players are pretty obscene, but is there any real difference between bitching about the price before the guy is signed and whining about how the team missed out after the guy signs somewhere else? That said, Dempster would be a good idea for a year or two. I really like Dempster. Three years though? Not so much.
  16. On a personal level, I'd love to see him accept a much-lower dollar contract and retire with the Twins. Of course, I'm not sure what incentive Morneau would feel to do that, except maybe the fact that if he did, he might end up with a bronze statute at Target Field someday (let's face it, he's been one of the best Twins to wear the uniform, if not for as long as we wanted). More realistically, he likely believes he has plenty left in the tank, and if another team is willing to throw the dice, he'll go there. If they can't get him extended, he'll be gone at the deadline.
  17. At this point in the Twins' history, I'd rather have that kind of calm confidence in scouting than a skittish ultra-conservatism. You're not going to get to the playoffs without a serious shakeup, and yes, that entails risk. I'll take it. I might regret being on record here, but I like this trade.
  18. I find it unconvincing that "watching" the player gives you a better idea of what he can and cannot do. I'll just leave this here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_biases_in_judgment_and_decision_making
  19. Hell yes. He's 26 and had one bad year last year. When he's on, he can be great.
  20. How do you know that no one offered for Revere instead of Span? Maybe they did, but the Twins didn't bite because (a) they think Revere is as good as Span/better than Span/good enough to bridge the gap to Hicks, and ( Revere costs literally millions of dollars less. Also, your claim that others' claims about Revere viz. Span are "rubbish" is conclusory. At least offer some evidence instead of dismissing other peoples' points of view out of hand. If all your argument consists of is the fact that it was Span and not Revere traded, then you're working off a whole mess of assumptions that you can't back up.
  21. Definitely. See if he can hit the upper 80's on his fastball. 1 year 850k contract at the most. +1. We have to do some serious risk management here. If he's back, let him prove it spring training. If he wants serious guaranteed money, I'll pass. It isn't personal. The Twins simply have no more room for error.
  22. And in case it matters, I'm a big believer in the idea that Hendriks not only can, but will prove himself.
  23. My personal opinion is that, while he may or may not have a spot "sewn up" according to Gardy and the front office, he should be given every chance to succeed or fail. His numbers in AAA were absolutely outstanding, he's still very young, and while he's certainly taken some lumps at the major league level thus far, he has had no real consistent time to prove himself. If I were in charge, I would sit down with him and say: "You're in. Think of this as your major league tryout. If you go out there and get shelled time after time, you'll find yourself off the roster. But if you go out there and have a single bad game, you won't need to worry about whether you'll still be here tomorrow. Now go prove something."
