  1. If Morneau keeps producing at his current clip into 2013, I agree. He's not that old; he just seems like it with his concussion issues. My guess for open-market value assuming health through the end of this season: $5-8 million per year. I would hope the Twins would be able to strike a deal on the low end of that spectrum, but with the possibility of much more money through incentives.
  2. This drives me nuts like a steering wheel in my pants. Same thing when people try to put a "c" into Hendriks. Basically, you lose all credibility talking about players if you can't even spell their names.
  3. Blah, blah, blah, fire the bums! Exactly who do you think was better than Dozier when he was called up? Who is better than Dozier now? Exactly what the **** does Jim Rantz have to do with it?
  4. This simply is untrue. Hardy is most certainly not having a great year at the plate, in large part due to the luck factor involved with his numbers being pulled down by a low BABIP (.235), but his fielding has stayed at a near elite level. But the WAR numbers completely contradict what you state: Hardy WAR 1.1 Value $5M FLD 5.6 (Baseball Reference WAR: 1.5/RAR 16) Dozier WAR 0.0 Value -$0.1M FLD -0.9 (Baseball Reference WAR: 0.4/RAR 5) As a true Gardy guy, Dozier will get plenty more chances at SS or 2B, I agree that he has shown enough flashes to have earned those extra second chances. Can you buy 1.1 or 1.2 WAR with that extra $6 million? I think you can. And if so, the math works. Basically what I'm saying is that nobody really thinks that Dozier is better than Hardy at the moment. But is Dozier minus $6 million in salary commitment better than an over the hill shortstop with good defense, too many injuries, and no bat? Yeah, probably.
  5. Reason #6 is the best one. Actually, since everything is a gamble anyway, I'd prefer to gamble on Willingham for at least one more season. Saying that his value will never be higher discounts the idea that he may stay healthy next year too. In 2011, he hit a career-high 29 home runs; in 2012 so far, he's at 30. Clearly, Target Field agrees with him. So not only would trading him now deprive us of his pop next year, it might also mean that we sold before the peak. Hell, trade deadline 2014 might be the best, who knows? I understand not wanting to ride the Willingham rollercoaster back down to the bottom, but there's no guarantee he's going to get hurt or underperform next year. And if he does, I can at least look back on the decision to keep him and feel okay with it being the best choice at the time.
  6. There are a ton of "ifs" in that scenario, but that's part of what makes it fun. I think the Morneau-to-Texas scenario is very interesting. We would love some solid middle infield help, and if he's Andrus-quality so much the better. I would hate to see Morneau leave, but it may make the better in the long run.
  7. His power has been a real bright spot on the 2012 team, and he's making the FO look pretty good in this case. I also love that they found a right-handed masher who can make use of the left field bleachers at Target Field. I never figured the park for the home run wasteland it was in 2010-2011, and Willingham is starting to prove that it isn't. Here's hoping for 40!
  8. I agree with this. We needed to have tempered expectations from the very beginning, but what Dozier has done isn't really out of the ordinary. He's a rookie who struggled. What else is new? Hopefully, the demotion will give him a message that he's got to listen to the coaches and earn it on the field, but I don't think there's any embarrassment there. Nor should there be. I still have hopes that Dozier will be more than a utility guy. Maybe he won't stick at his position for a decade plus, but he could stick around longer than we think.
  9. WAR with respect to defensive position aside, I agree with this perspective. I don't think it's accurate to say that Plouffe has had a better season. From mid-May until his injury? Yup. (Again, not because Mauer is doing badly; because Plouffe beginning about May 15 was otherworldly.) But that's only about a month, and Mauer has been back to his old rock-solid, consistent self. Perhaps we're splitting hairs.
  10. You missed the point more than Michael Bay missed the point when he made "Pearl Harbor" ...and that's an awful lot, girl.
  11. To begin with, yes. Hendriks (with no "c") needs a steady job. Plouffe got a steady job and ran with it. Valencia had a steady job last season and punted it. The only way we know what we have is if we give him a chance. Hendriks has nothing left to prove in AAA - he's making the International League his bitch. It's time for him to take his lumps in the majors without the specter of demotion hanging over his head. After that, let's see what we have in Pedro Hernandez. Is he going to be a part of the staff or is he organizational filler? We won't know until we try, and we have no real reason not to. The other guy we might give a shot to is Deolis Guerra. I don't think he's ready yet, but maybe give him a September call up?
  12. It is kind of hilarious, actually. I like to hum the Benny Hill theme song whenever a ball gets hit his way...
  13. The Mariners?
  14. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who remembers this. Platooning him with Danny "DFA" Valencia? Gimme a break...
  15. The price must be right. Chances are another team will overpay for him after 2013 if he stays healthy. I don't want the Twins to be the team that overpays. But if he doesn't have a banner year next year, or spends some time on the DL for another wrist/neck-type issue, we might be able to keep him for relatively cheap. Of course I doubt he displaces Chris Parmelee post-2013; the Twins will want the younger, cheaper model. But I also doubt that another club will really want him as a full-time 1B either. He'll be a platoon 1B/DH option, and I think most teams will recognize that.
  16. Yeah, I think September was overly ambitious anyway. At the very least, I'd expect to see him up next September. If all goes well, hopefully sooner.
  17. 1) More or less agree 2) More or less agree How is the Jeff Gray move defensible? No freakin' idea. Honestly, I think a smart use of the bullpen would have been putting out the mini-rally the Sux had going in the 7th. And who the hell cares about tomorrow night if you can't win tonight? Cross that bridge when you come to it. At least if you win tonight, you're assured of winning the series.
  18. Well, Liriano did well, which means I was wrong. Funny thing, he was the worse starting pitcher. And the other was Nick Freaking Blackburn. Too bad about the whole Jeff Gray thing.
  19. Strangely, I feel like I lost the game by seeing that... New York Mets > Jeff Gray
  20. irony alert! Irony alert!
  21. Boom. Done. (Say it in Piven's voice, it makes more sense.) But seriously, I'm okay with the Sux picking him up. Liriano is never good late in the season. He will be lucky if he's worth a single game over replacement the rest of the way...
  22. I can't speak for him, but I find mine in North Minneapolis. The $20 covers the tip. SARS> Avian Flu> Livan Hernandez> Jeff Gray
  23. Because Law said it? Wow. Good reasoning.
