  1. In objective sports; like speed skating, track and field, swimming, etc..., athleticism is continuously increasing. Records continue to fall as new techniques and training regimens are discovered or perfected. Why would this not be true in baseball as well? I think if you plucked a superstar out of '70's he would probably be able to play today but wouldn't be anything particularly special. On the other hand if you grabbed said superstar at birth and allowed him to grow up in todays culture I think he'd still be a very good player and possibly still a star.
  2. And Kyle Gibson. Perhaps he also works internationally and liked Salcedo and Soliman? I bet he's a White Sox employee in disguise!!!
  3. Dylan Bundy pitched in the majors his first season of professional ball at 19. Of course then he blew his arm out...
  4. Except that the "current placeholders" have been thought to be more than placeholders in the very recent past and might still be. I think it is probable there will be one spot for "last chance" pitchers; Worley, Hendriks, Diamond. That just isn't true about DeVries and Walters. Now I think it's a fair point to say they won't all have a rotation spot set aside for them but then again the OP didn't say that either.
  5. DeVries and Walters were not considered rotation quality pitchers last season. On the other hand Hendriks, Worley both have been as recently as this season. Correia and Gibson seem to be locks for next season. There is going to be a left hander in the rotation. I haven't looked at LH FA's but somehow I doubt there is a high quality one available. So to me the rotation to start 2014 will probably be: Correia Gibson Internal Candidate (Deduno, Worley, Hendriks) Left hander (Darnell, Hernandez, Diamond, Albers, FA) ??? That leaves one opening for a FA. IMO it will be in the mold of the last 3 or 4 seasons. All the historic evidence points to a low budget, strike throwing, no strikeout pitcher signed to a 1 year deal.
  6. The Twins should trade Justin and $23 million, the money not spent this year on salaries and the remainder of Morneau's contract, to the Orioles for Dylan Bundy. Let's buy us a Bundy!
  7. The point isn't can they keep Sano assuming he's good enough. The question is can they keep all of Sano, Buxton, Meyer, Stewart, Rosario, etc... Those contracts add up. The next question is can you sign any meaningful free agents in addition to paying your core? For those that want to wait for a few years before signing FA's those few millions of dollars could become extremely important. If the Twins spend "only a few millions extra per year", on let's say 4 contracts, that's potentially 8-10 million per year that can't be used on FA's. That is significant money. That's the difference between Anibal Sanchez and Joe Blanton.
  8. Mayo has one up on MLB.com. I'm not sure it has really be updated since the beginning of the season though. P.S. - Mods I know you frown upon full copy and paste but I'm worried that when Mr. Sulbaran gets moved to the Twins page he will not be in the top 20 prospects and thus we would lose all of this information. If this is not a good enough reason feel free to adjust as you see fit.
  9. Let me direct you to this post. And this post. How about this post? One more? My argument all along has been we know very little about the international prospects. Certainly not enough to judge anything at this point. Good or bad. The same goes for Ryan. He has no history suggesting we should just trust that he will get things right. On the other hand he hasn't had the opportunity or budget to either. So again, we must wait a few years before we really know anything.
  10. As much as I bitch about Ryan's moves in FA his trades don't disappoint. This was a great return.
  11. The Royals still have a very strong minor league system. Mayo has 5 Royals in his revised top 100 rankings. His #6 & 7 are Manaea and Hunter Dozier their first 2 picks this season. BA has 3 Royals in his revised top 50 list. The Royals have 3 very good arms at the top of their system in Kyle Zimmer (AA), Yordano Ventura who is hitting triple digits on the gun (AAA) and Manaea who could be an Ace if this spring's struggles were injury related. I think it's a bit premature to proclaim the demise of the Royals. Even with their trade for Shields they are looking strong.
  12. Many of you are claiming the Twins have done a nice job with the international market the last few years, and you might turn out to be right, but at this point I think it is a bit early to judge. So far the prospects have a grand total of 267 PA in the majors. I think the same point applies to this years international acquisitions, nothing really will be known about them for several years. Having a highly ranked farm system can give us hope but in the end what matters is what makes it to the majors and succeeds.
  13. All else being equal 3B is probably worth more than RF but what if the 3rd baseman is below average defensively and the RF is great? I don't know the answer to that one. That is a likely scenario (assuming Stanton is a great OF I haven't looked it up).
  14. Who was the lottery ticket? IMO it was more like a gift exchange at Christmas with the family. You regret the choice as soon as you pick up that shiny package.
  15. I'm not trying to be argumentative here. I really can't see your point of view. Let's say the Twins throw that "junk" out there instead. They lose an extra 2 or 3 games. What value has been lost? They are terrible either way. At least if they lose an extra couple games they might end up with a higher draft pick which has potential value. There is also a chance that "junk" shows he might have a future in the league like Florimon and Deduno. I'm not saying that KC has no value. I'm saying he has no value to the Twins. You put him on another team and those innings and 2 wins might become important.
  16. I agree he had limitations and I am not advocating holding his track record against him. On the other hand he has no track record so the "Have faith he knows what he's doing" argument holds no water either. I think there are legitimate reasons to question his approach. I wonder if the "late bloomers" wouldn't just wait to sign until next summer when they could command a higher price. On the other hand most of these prospects come from extremely poor countries and tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars probably would be extremely tempting. Interesting dilemma.
  17. Can someone explain to me how the Twins will be improved in 2015 because they signed Correia? In order to have "value" some benefit has to be received. If KC was signed by a contending team then the argument could be helping towards contention but the Twins aren't in that situation. He isn't a piece for the future. He isn't going to bring back a piece for the future. He isn't helping us contend. I just don't see the value.
  18. I was speaking about Fernandez in my post not Stanton who Miami might trade because he will become expensive very shortly. As others have already pointed out the Twins have a nice balance in their minor leagues right now. We have 2 players that debuted last season. 3 more this season. We have another 4 or 5 at AAA/AA and even more behind that at A ball and rookie leagues. So no, they're not all at A-ball. I still don't think I'd trade for Stanton though. The Twins big holes look to be SS, 3B, Catcher and Front Line starting pitching. Corner OF is our deepest position.
  19. A couple points. First, signing players from many countries does not mean that they are high upside talents. Only that the Twins are diverse in our countries of acquisition. Second, who are the best three international talents that Ryan signed that have made the majors? The best I could find were Rincon, Mijares and Rivas. Wilson Ramos could become the best if he can ever get healthy and Arcia is worth watching. That is not an impressive list if that's it. I certainly see no reason to have faith that Mr. Ryan (and the Twins) are following Mike's preferred path. Third, naming specific players is pointless. We have no idea who out of the top 30 the Twins like and who they might be willing to spend on. We also have no idea if their offers would be competitive let alone the top offer. I think Mike's fine in saying he wanted more high quality players signed without being specific. That leaves it up to the Twins to decide who and for how much.
  20. The Twins already signed him!
  21. Oliveros and Hernandez are both on the DL. If the rules posted earlier are correct they seem like the would be ineligible. That goes for Meyer and Wimmers too it seems.
  22. Everybody is available for the right price. However, I made an assumption that the Marlins prospects were at A ball similar to the Astros and wouldn't be competing for several years and might be willing to trade him for a haul of prospects that line up better with their own. That isn't true. The Marlins are actually closer to contention than we probably are since most of their top talent is at AA this year. So you're probably right that there is little chance the Marlins would move Fernandez. That said, I would be willing to part with significantly more for Fernandez than I would for Price.
  23. First let me say that I am not trying to pile on here Mike. I appreciate your point of view on many subjects. Often times we end up on the same side of the arguments. Two points. First, I think there is much more information available for the Rule 4 draft, Rule 5 draft and the FA period (with a possible exception of international FA's) than for the international signing period. Do you agree with this? Second, I don't think there is anything wrong with discussing the Twins approach to international signings during the process as long as we realize it is still an on going process. There is still time for the Twins to make a splash. Here is a question. You seem to want the Twins to sign a high upside player. What if the Twins use the remainder of their money, I don't know how much they have left but let's just say $750k, to sign a player not on the BA list. Clearly that would be a player the Twins think has a chance to be very good. Would you be satisfied with that?
  24. I have a gut feeling that Worley will perform well next year again with an ERA around 4. He pitched well his first few seasons and I think he will return to form. He will never front the rotation but he could fit somewhere in the middle for us.
  25. I think this is very similar to the FA pitcher discussions we've had (I'm not looking to restart them I am just drawing a parallel in thought process). You seem to only want players that are guaranteed to be upgrades. I look at it more from a probability perspective. If there is a 60% chance the FA is an upgrade (and he isn't blocking a prospect, the contract is reasonable, yada yada) then the move should be made. To me baseball is too unpredictable to guarantee anything.
