  1. Kaz over either of the pitchers we got. That said, I am really pleased that the Twins have done something that is almost certainly going to lead to a better season than we have had the last 3 years. Go Ricky! Go Phil!
  2. Not sure why people are higher on Diamond than Duensing, but neither would entice me to pass on Kazmir if TR was willing to go get him. We have a number of pitchers who may never be more than AAAA, but which one or two can be more? Tough call at this point. I like your ideas. Not optimistic that these moves will happen, but TR has surprised the hell out of me just lately. P.S. how was your crow? Mine was bittersweet.
  3. Well I was wrong. I still don't think that Correia is an elite pitcher, but he held up pretty well for a team that didn't give any of their pitchers very much support. Correia was at least as good as hit stats said he'd be. And as far as TR, he sure passed on a lot of FA pitchers who had bad years (which seemed to be the majority of them). Let's hope Nolasco & Hughes have a great experience in Minnesota.
  4. Like several others, I would have liked to see the LH Kazmir. Nonetheless, I have to say I am more than a little shocked. Absolutely did not expect this much true effort. Think I'll go make some gravy to go with my crow.
  5. This is a fun thread. I really like that people are that high on Vargas. Wasn't sure if his bat was quick enough for him to keep moving along. Apparently a number of you think it is. Nice.
  6. It's really fun that in your imagination Ricky is so excited. Um, me too!
  7. As I have been very, very negative about the idea of TR actually stepping up and making this team really good, rather than just better, I have to applaud this signing. It needs a Garza or a Kazmir to make it a real possibility that we could be competitive inside and outside of our division, but it is a promising start. Kazmir/Garza Correia Nolasco Gibson Deduno/other guys with Meyer sliding in when ready. Things could be looking pretty good.
  8. I believe that most GMs are trying to be careful about how they allocate their resources. They (most) actually try to keep salary escalation in check. In fact, therein lies the problem. I believe TR either has little grasp on what a top-of-the-rotation pitcher costs, or he just cannot get himself to spend the money. I appreciate that he feels responsible to spend the Pohlad money carefully, but Jim Pohlad told him to improve the team. I'm sure he will, but he seems to be looking to do it with league average pitchers replacing poor pitchers. Not the boost we were all hoping for. BTW: sure hope I'm wrong about this.
  9. John - You guys have created a wonderful site here. Even as my optimism drains slowly from my body I cannot keep from coming to this site several times a day. One recommendation: you have the notifications when we get a LIKE. That's nice. How about a notification of when someone hits a REPLY to a post of ours? The reason I ask is that I have gone back to an article I had commented on and see that someone hit REPLY and commented on my comment. Often these are really helpful comments, clarifying something I had missed or explaining something I did not fully understand. It would be fun to be aware of that REPLY earlier rather than later or never seeing it at all. Great site. You, Seth, et al, are responsible for me skipping hundreds of hours a year of doing productive things. Peace
  10. Josh Johnson has signed with the Padres. I wish I could remember who it was, but someone here at TD took the home runs that Hughes had allowed in Yankee stadium and overlayed where they landed on top of a Target Field layout. Pretty much all the home runs in NY would have been home runs at TF. 1. It was a pretty cool tool that he had gotten from Fangraphs, and 2. If you want to see a grand improvement from Hughes you are going to have to see most of it from a reduction in his very high BABIP. IMHO, I think Jimenez is going to cost a fortune. Someone will throw a boatload of money at him. Still would prefer to see Garza and Kazmir.
  11. I was pretty sure that Escobar got sent down in 2013 (to AAA) to play more SS and refine his skills. His .880 OPS in 188 PA showed a fluency with the bat that should have pleased everyone. Can he sustain this? I don't know, but when he came back to the Twins in September (SSS) his offensive numbers were very good for a SS. They featured a .324 BA and a .343 OBP for the 24 year old. I like Florimon as a fielder and wish him the best, but I believe the stronger Twins team has Escobar starting at SS and Florimon perhaps serving as the utility infielder. Like the parallels with Dozier. Good work. Thanks Thry.
  12. Brock - As one who frequently questions the results that Anderson has attained for our pitchers, I would like to point out that neither I nor any of the others (that I remember) bringing up the same questions have singled out Marquis. That is off limits. All that matters for that year, regarding Marquis, is that his daughter made a full recovery. I appreciate that you are sensitive to it. I like to think we all are.
  13. Pardon me Jay, but have you just started following this team? Looking at only 'The very best free agents' would show that the Twins have never been involved when TR was the GM. We ask only that he look to sign someone who could likely be above MLB average. Instead the Twins are linked to Nolasco & Arroyo. These are two fine pitchers, but neither can realistically be expected to be at all exceptional. Both, if they have good years, could measure all the way up to 'average MLB pitcher'. After 3 years of over 95 losses, some of us who have supported the Twins for decades are getting frustrated. Tough to be me, right? But that is why I hang out here. I love baseball. I love the Twins. I am usually an optimist, kind of to the extreme. At this point, however, I cannot imagine the Twins ever having a really good team (like, competitive even into the playoffs) for as long as TR is GM. He cannot get himself to pay what it takes to get better. I have bled Twins all my life. I have never had so little faith in what the future holds. Sano & Buxton, et al, cannot win games with no pitching. As near as I can tell, we will never have enough quality pitching until TR retires, at which point I expect to be dead. So call it an easy target if you like. See how if feels in 20 years.
  14. Seems 'schulb' is a little harsh. He is, at this point, a better ballplayer than at least 99% of the readers of Twins Daily, so you've kind of insulted all of us. And you did it in so few words! Efficiency rocks!
  15. Hugh Morris - JB_Iowa pretty much nailed it. Obviously TR wants to build for the future. I just cannot believe he'll do it through a significant move in free agency. It's just not in his nature. It's like he will forever appear bewildered by the fact that the salary levels aren't where they were 2 or 3 years before. And if the Twins wait around for 3 or 4 really good pitchers to come through the minor leagues and get here at the same time, that could be a really long wait. Possibly centuries. The 1987 and 1991 teams were NOT all home grown. Our GM back then went out and got what the team needed rather than waiting for a tsunami of talent to appear from the minor leagues all at the same time.
  16. Twins traded for Pavano. After that he never pitched for another team. Don't think that qualifies as 'resurrecting a career'. [insert Rick Anderson joke here.]
  17. Hi Vikesfan47 - I think I understand why you are giving up your tickets. As much as I love baseball and the Twins I would be tempted to do the same, were I to have them. It must be a really agonizing decision. That sucks. Sadly, I agree with most of what you wrote. As I see headlines like, "Twins talks heating up with..." and then the name of some MLB average pitcher my frustration grows. Why don't they 'Heat Up' a conversation with someone who, if they have a year like they have had in the past, would be well above average? Alas, I have not been this soured by Twins baseball for decades. So, I get it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Maybe Pohlad was serious. Maybe he'll go talk to Garza himself. Or Kazmir. Because I cannot imagine TR doing anything involving a really good pitcher and free agency that would actually help build a future for this club.
  18. Old Nurse - I usually agree with you. However... I think you have could have a different attitude when you have maybe two starting pitchers you can hope to see in the next 3 years or so (Meyer & Gibson), an expiring contract for your staff Ace (Correia), and you are $40 million under the '52% of revenue' guideline you set for yourself. This team needs pitching, and internal options are too far away to wait around for. Or we can just be the Twins of 1993-2000.
  19. The only guy I am absolutely sure you'd lose is Achter. He may be ready to sit in an MLB bullpen already. A team could very well determine to keep him on their roster all year. I really like Oliveros, too, though I cannot remember why. I'd protect him. The others are not going to take a roster spot in 2014, unless someone gambles on Polanco like we did with Santana. But hey! I don't know! Who out there sees someone else we would really lose? And this is only my 40-man roster ideas. I get depressed that there are minor league drafts I have to protect guys from.
  20. That's some fun stuff that will never happen. Does look fun, though. P.S. If you can get Jurickson Profar for that do you pull the trigger? We got Florimon and Escobar at SS and no one else coming any time soon. Intriguing...
  21. I would start to attend therapy sessions to treat my depression. I would continue to go until the Twins signed an above average pitcher. In other words, I'd just go to therapy until the money was gone.
  22. Yes. It bothers me. A lot. I know it's early. I know there is plenty of time. But that is what you do when you are pussy-footing around, trying to get a deal. The Twins need to stand up and actually PAY for a potential top of the rotation pitcher. There are a few out there that might actually have excellent years. The kind of arms that are not a band-aid for 2014, but maybe useful for the Twins' future. They are so proud of players who leave money on the table to sign here. Well, congratulations. That is part of what has gotten us 3 seasons in a row in which our team lost over 95 games. Arroyo would be fine, but only if there was a significant signing along with him. TR is concentrating on the wrong end of the list right now. I have lost all confidence that he has any intention in signing a pitcher that will be above league average. So much so that I have stopped coming to TD many days. Love the Twins, hate what occurs as a lie of an effort to improve the club. And you don't even have a like button any more. My world crumbles...
