  1. The potential for this thread going apocalyptically nuclear really looked promising around 3:01 today....
  2. I've been banging the drum on the Marlins boatload of pitching talent and their lack of trading acumen/payroll management problems all season. They actually got a first hand helping of Gallen and didn't jump on the chance to take him back on the plane ride back to the Cities? And Caleb Smith and Anderson could have been obtained for relatively less. Has anyone written an article yet on what the potential waiver claim market is going to look in August under the new rules? Aggravating and frustrating.....
  3. I think all of the bargain/creative deals made today exemplifies your remark. It will be a darn shame if the Twins miss winning the AL Central and/or miss obtaining home field advantage because they didn't act on their obvious pen deficiencies much sooner than deadline day, today.
  4. Absolutely spot on. Take anything Doogie says with a grain of his "self-serving-sources" salt. As that fictional chemistry genius Walter White once said: "Name one thing in this world that is not negotiable."
  5. ...as I was sayin'.... Come on Pohlad and FO! Just take on one bad contract (short term in nature) + give up a middling prospect (like Lewin Diaz, for example?), and you can likely get the targeted player or players you really want/need.
  6. Yep, This third-tier-type deal should have been do-able in early June. But to be fair, Romo has been: FIPping at 1.79 over his last 15 games... with a 0.61 ERA, and a K/BB of 12/1, K/9 of 7.4 and a WHIP of 0.89. Over the exact same time frame, Morin's: FIP is 5.28 5.40 ERA K/9 of 3.09! WHIP of 1.11 The Twins did their homework, and identified a playoff-experienced veteran riding a "Hot-Hand", that can potentially provide some "stability" to the pen; and, who they can possibly ride for maybe 2 months>>> and only gave up a guy they likely were going to be unable to protect, anyway. But yeah, there better be better names than Romo on the roster by next Wednesday night.
  7. The Twins are chock full of 1Bs and OFs and not enough 40 man spots, while the Marlins are blessed with an abundance of pitchers in their farm system. The Twins should have pushed harder with the Ms to get more immediate major league help- Anderson would have been a nice throw in, Smith should have been brought up for a more robust deal. At least they were/are talking with one of the right teams to get a good deal from. Regardless, on first impressions, the Twins still made a good deal here- but not nearly enough unless there're more impactful moves coming.
  8. Making the case for raising the mound back up to pre-1969 levels.... nightly.
  9. These two words resonate with me: Oliver Drake
  10. Lefty Sam McDowell of the Indians temporarily played .2 innings at 1B and another game for one out at 2B before returning to the mound mid-inning- he even got the put out- good thing he didn't need to make a relay throw on a double play!
  11. Definitely demonstrates a distinct change in philosophy from prior regime. Then: >Trading Aaron Hicks for "solid defensive catcher" JR Murphy comes to mind. >Slowed Mitch Garver's ascent to the major league roster for defensive deficiencies. >Drew Butera over Chris Herrmann. Now: >Saying bye-bye to Stuart Turner was one of Falvey's first moves. >Fast-tracking of Ryan Jeffers- who is definitely a "hit-first" catcher.
  12. Yep. As I wrote in disgust last night, the Twins should now be the experts at doing this kind of deadline deal.
  13. In other words, I need to call Vegas and put down a quick C-note on both the Yanks and the over-under?
  14. May threw ~50 pitches in 1.2 IP on Sunday. And combined with his performance that day, he's at best a "walking wounded wing" option tonight. Given the abrupt axing by FalVine of Parker after his stink-up-the-joint effort, none of the veteran RPs are immune from having the boom lowered on them too if they fail miserably tonight.
  15. That way they can make even more of that sweet waiver claim money!, as in the cases of the M boys.
  16. 10-day IL extension from 7-day concussion IL puts him at, tomorrow at the earliest?
  17. I heard he took a call for Ron Perranoski by mistake and hung up on Falvey.
  18. You mean, comparing Juan Rincon, Today?
  19. This. Exactly what I've been talking about. There are guys like this around the league. And these in these circumstances would be so thrilled to unload an undesirable contract, they'll maybe even throw in a guy- or guys- that will also help. Just sweeten the pot appropriately. And no replies about having to throw in Lewis or Kiriloff as the sweeteners. The overpay value for RPs- rental or extended control- has been pretty well established- by the MN Twins- one year ago this month.
  20. Yes. It's essentially what I'm saying. The Twins likely have several if/then "deals" on the table. They just have had to goose up the best of the deals to close it/them. Getting an "ace" closer would have been ideal, but even getting 2-3 guys simply more competent than what currently inhabits the roster shouldn't have been this difficult- given the circumstances in the pen that WE ALL KNEW ABOUT since last winter. The Twins FO has been through this procedure. They should have known how to structure it. They gave up Pressley just one year ago for a basket of maybes!
  21. I'm thinking that something close to this is what might come about. That's simply a variation on the old Twins mantra the previous Twins braintrust used to use- letting their media mouthpieces like Sid and Dougie proclaim that they were the next-to-final bidders for a prized free agent: "Oh, we were so close! We just couldn't risk jeopardizing the franchise."
  22. I was just pointing out it's a fallacious argument to assume that falling for the most ridiculous scenario is what I had in mind. I'm just trying to point out the Twins strong points in getting a deal done, as well as their weak points. Right now, it appears the FO is in full risk avoidance mode, trapped in managerial inertia. Outside the box thinking appears to be absent and payroll restrictions imposed by ownership may also be hampering what HAS TO BE DONE if the Twins are to compete in the 2019 postseason. Trading Lewis or Kiriloff at their current professional low-tide would be a monumental error (particularly for a 2-month rental). But what about Jaylin Davis, who is going nuts in Rochester? Or any of their passel of relatively unheralded pitchers in AA and below who are pitching lights out right now?
  23. No one's assuming that. Falvine make the big bucks for bringing home a pennant. Getting deals done- to fill obvious shortcomings (since the offseason!!!) is part of the job description. They don't get a bonus for "trying."
  24. Again. Unfair. You're assuming I propose an emotional response to a problem with a logical solution? My philosophy is don't be a team like the Marlins, trade with them. Find out who's pissed off Billy Beane, ala Donaldson, and pick up the phone.
