The Twins are chock full of 1Bs and OFs and not enough 40 man spots, while the Marlins are blessed with an abundance of pitchers in their farm system. The Twins should have pushed harder with the Ms to get more immediate major league help- Anderson would have been a nice throw in, Smith should have been brought up for a more robust deal. At least they were/are talking with one of the right teams to get a good deal from. Regardless, on first impressions, the Twins still made a good deal here- but not nearly enough unless there're more impactful moves coming.

I am gratified that I finally have come to your post and I am now certain that it wasn't just me watching the constant shots of Rocco glowering in the dugout in the 7th and 8th innings. It certainly appeared that that's exactly what he was doing. As elsewhere stated, pretty sure with better than even odds that May is IL'd or traded in the next 10 days.

I think intentionally leaving a floundering Trevor May in there for fans to endure nearly 50 of his pitches was about as "adamantly" polite a message as Rocco could possibly send.

Article: Let's Make A Deal, Part II: Payroll
jokin replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Tough decisions coming for the FO, with Rosario the most important of the position players. If they think that Kiriloff will be ready by mid-season 2020, Rosario will likely be the one moved while there's still trade value. Hard to imagine, but they probably can't afford to extend Rosario and replace/re-up all of the departing/extended Starting Pitchers.- 53 replies

Thanks. Not that valuable a stat, then... as "clutch" hitting is generally regarded by baseball statisticians as a myth and an inevitable function of opportunity?

Good to know. But then, how do you get a negative number when you hit a homer?

Fully concur. Rocco has had full confidence in him all season, and Garver has responded. He looks like a wise and confident veteran at the plate, just sitting on a variety of pitches to hit to all fields. It makes me question his WPA rating, though. I mean, how bad was he behind the plate, really?

Larnach for a rental RP? I sure hope not. -
Under-the-radar Cody Stashak is having an under the radar monster season in AA, and now, even more impressively so in AAA. His K/BB is an excellent 71/9 in some 48 innings pitched. WHIP around 1. He's a Rule 5 guy in the offseason. I haven't seen him throw, but it seems worth finding out if he fits in the Twins' plans going forward.

Why Didn't the Twins Make a Trade Already?
jokin commented on Mike Sixel's blog entry in Mike Sixel's Blog
This!!! In the Marlins' case, they are ripe to be taken in a trade for their outstanding pitching depth on both a salary dump and their often-odd decision-making. The Marlins have been going nowhere this year since the offseason- trading away Realmuto. And they're once again stuck with leftover high salary players from their previous "grand plan" to putting a competitive team on the field. Accepting Wei-Yun Chen in a trade (ala Bronson Arroyo)- and additionally getting two younger Marlins pitchers as "the cost" (Smith, Guerrero, Anderson, Lopez, et al)- in exchange for say, two or three Top 20 prospects- should have been explored by the Twins in a June trade. -
And yet, after that fluke single off of Rogers in the 8th, just one pitch left just a fraction more up and out over the plate to Ramirez (OPSing .875 in last 15 games), instead of a bang bang DP, Ramirez ties the game. And then Rogers is the "goat."

Especially THIS, Twins had lots of hard hit balls right at Indian defenders. The game of baseball is one of both inches and split second decision-making. I don't get folks expecting repeat perfection from athletes. Especially coming off of four days off- timing is bound to be off at some point. Re- Polanco's wicked line drive "misplay" to CF.... The hardest play to read for an OF is the line drive directly over his head. To make that play the CF had to make a perfect and instant read right off Polanco's bat contacting the baseball.

The Indians have been a bit of bully over the last 29 games, going 21-8, as they came out of the break. The Twins typically found ways to lose games like this one. Last night, they found ways to win one against a hard-charging AL Central division power. I don't know about the Series, but I think tonight's gutty effort and outcome proved that the boys are making it incumbent upon FalVine to bolster BOTH the SP and RP staff by the end of the month to ensure a legitimate run can be made in order to secure home field advantage going into the playoffs.

Article: MIN 4, OAK 3: Twins Refuse to Lose Three in a Row
jokin replied to AJ Condon's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes. And yes. Mitch Garver in the post-game alluded to where the boys are at physically. Banged up and physically spent... and especially looking forward to recharging the batteries and getting healthy during the All Star Break. In addition, guys are out there playing out of position or coming off the IL a bit rusty, and it shows defensively. He alone caught almost all the innings in these 3 marathons of late, but he still came through when the Twins really needed someone to step up at the plate. Praised the pen, too. They are much-maligned for good reason, but there have been lots of gutty performances recently, tonight being no exception. I thought Rocco played his hand with the relief crew magnificently.... and got a little luck along the way. If Garver can somehow stay healthy, he looks like he can be the heart and soul of this team for the next 5 years- for a guy who was originally touted as just a decent bat, he's doing a lot more than just what shows up in the box score. Rocco sure believes in him much more than the previous manager and FO management did.- 47 replies

He's listed at 220 lbs and likely to pack on more weight before he reaches the Twins. His speed rating at 40 concerns me to if he translates to a major league OF. Sure would like to maximize that arm somewhere else on the field if he can't hack it in RF.

Matt Wallner with 2 OF assists, at Home and 2B. Seth, we know he has a gun out there, what do you know about his range in the OF? Any chance the Twins consider 2-waying him in a RP/OF dual role?

Article: Twins Minor League Report (6/30): Australia Day
jokin replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
First important thing for me after Thorpe's impressive performance was the fine day for Kiriloff. If he's finally coming "back" into his previous form, he changes the roster dynamic for this team starting in Spring Training in 2020. Second thing that caught my eye was how great a venue and what a beautiful location for the Blue Wahoos to play at. Right on Pensacola Bay and within sight of both the Naval Air Station and the National Seashore Park. Wow! Gotta make a trip down there soon.- 6 replies

10 days off for a stomach ailment? The worst case of Montezuma's Revenge usually only lasts for 3-5 days at most (and I don't think the Twins went to Mexico on that last road trip). Methinks management is stretching the spirit of the new IL rule a bit.- 7 replies

Wow, ain't that the truth! I would like to posit that the new "10 Day IL" perhaps has made it verrrry tempting for both management and players to utilize as a short respite, rather than "playing through" the nagging injuries.
