Article: Week in Review: Short But Sweet
jokin replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There's a fair possibility of a rainout on Wednesday. Possibly a good time to skip Odorizzi in the rotation and get him "fixed" on the sidelines and/or a game in rellef before his next scheduled start? -
Article: Tyler Austin Traded to San Francisco
jokin replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How about Austin plus another one of their spare OF/1B/UIF or prospect starters.... "for starters". But, for just Austin, and maybe another mid-level prospect, don't many teams have wild/big velo raw or failing prospects that the Twins might be able to "fix?" They've sure been dumping a lot of guys that fit that description who are now throwing in major league bullpens. -
As it should have. And one amongst multiple pitching developmental failures. Which is why I still give the managing duo the benefit of the doubt. The country club days are over. Players and coaches are much more accountable, and problems more quickly dealt with via intervention/demotion/dismissal. All good.

Are you willing to start a TA-O-Meter, like Spirit Dave did for Aaron Hicks? Just for all of us in the Twins masochist club? Laranch should jump above all of the above, except Kiriloff, by about late 2020. Depending on how next year goes, both for him and the Twins, he might even get a September call-up. -

As I was just writing.... they still do... ie, Who on the farm currently is going to provide some quality RP innings when some of the current pen's arms (inevitably) start to break down? (I have little faith in Reed, Magill or Moya) Wasn't there another Vasquez or Mejia-type floating around out there & worth taking a shot on? -

Disappointing return, for sure. I would have hoped the Twins could have insisted on a high ceiling/flawed minor league pitcher over a mid-ceiling 4th OF type (who are available on the waiver wire seemingly on a daily basis). -
Insurance policies are good until they expire, or until the holder lets it lapse. (And remember, the Twins appear to have chosen not to play Cruz in NL road games.) Austin was clearly always the odd man out, but, he certainly has more potential value vis a vis a potential calamity via injury/suspension than risking one game with your young, healthy ace on the mound.

Without Gordon, Gonsalves, Javier and Kiriloff on active duty.... and with many, many of the others getting off to such poor starts, there's not much on the farm to get too exited about. Were Zach Littel and Ryan Jeffers merely mirages in 2018? Rooker and Larnach REALLY struggling..... but it's early, thankfully.- 15 replies

Harper, Garver, Cave...? Definitely DFA Duffey over axing Austin. It seems dumb to just axe him before April 12 decision day. And as expected, Berrios did fine and DeJong wasn't needed. I preferred risking one game shorthanded at pitching versus losing Austin as an insurance policy for whatever the duration was of his Twins career. Do the Twins think they can sneak him through waivers? Have to think Austin's agent will try to find him a team with less options at 1st.

Pitching situation dictated hitting the panic button. Mejia was apparently eager and ready to answer the call. Looks like he could be a real work horse out there, hopefully, he's well past his injury bugaboo from last year. Back to panic buttons, I have to think there might have been another way to bring up pitching help without DFAing Tyler Austin. IL list, demoting another player/pitcher, etc. IE-> Surely, Garver has an option left? I also would have rolled with and relied on Berrios, giving him the ball and telling him we need 7+ (or more) innings on Sunday- the emerging team ace is up for that kind of challenge. Cruz is (apparently) already sitting out the next 3 NL games. Plus, Austin is/was a great piece of insurance against something catastrophic happening to Cruz/Cron down the road. (Astudillo is not a very legit option at 1st).

Missed the double dribble, but refs also made two inaccurate foul calls on Jerome, forcing him to the bench, that allowed Auburn back into the game. As officiating/reffing goes.... These things tend to even out.

Then why do YOU only have Jeffers at #14? And Rortvedt @ 24? With as much as you value catchers in your overall assessments of prospects, it sure seems you don't value either's potential as much as the Twins do of both?- 96 replies

I would take Gibby at 32 and 33 over what Perez brings to the table in a NY minute. Regarding Hughes extension, any member of the grounds crew who took a quick glance at his career trajectory could have told you that extending Hughes could be one of the last nails in your GM coffin.

Yep. The Dodgers are under serious league scrutiny because of their precarious over-leveraged financial position.

Try harder to look at the comps. This is the fairest way to evaluate the two. Both extremely athletically gifted, both at premier positions. And regarding "issues", Hicks was chock full of them in his tenure as a Twin. Seriously, how can you forget the many multiple weeks-long AB futilities that both Hicks and fans endured? Hicks had annual demotional/rehab trips to the minors in his first four years. How about phantom injuries and unilateral snap-decisions on stopping and then re-starting his switch-hitting? How about wishing out loud he wished he had chosen golf instead of baseball? Strange stuff, indeed. Face it, Hicks was as big a distraction and disaster in his time in Minnesota, with the same fleeting glimpses of athletic brilliance that Buxton has afforded us in his time here- only by all measurements, both on paper, in the field, and by what was accomplished at younger ages- Buxton of the two is the one who could still put up several 6.5-7.5 WAR years as he approaches 30. We know, and I assume Buxton now knows, what he must accomplish at the plate AND avoid in the OF, if he wants to salvage his career. Like Hicks, and even more so, he has the talent; the question to answer is: When will he have reached the physical and mental maturity to make the commitment to reach his full potential?

With the very apparent move away from signing higher-dollar/long term FAs, we need more than hope. It seems critical to the long-term success of the club to dramatically increasing the Hit/Miss rate on prospects. (BTW- Is there a service that grades clubs on their Hit/Miss rate on say, the first 5 or 10 rounds in the draft, plus the International signing period?)

How about 2 guys that may not be "miles apart???" Aaron Hicks OPS+ by age year 23) 63 24) 76 25) 98 26) 64 [1st year with Yankees] Hicks had 1218 ABs after his 4th season. 27) 122 28) 123 Byron Buxton OPS+ by age year 21) 57 22) 90 23) 93 24) 4 [only 90 ABs, multiple injuries] Buxton has 979 ABs so far. 25) ? 26) ? 27) ? 28) ? -Buxton @ age 21 OPS+ is close to Hicks 1st year @ age 23. -Buxton @ age 22 and 23 OPS+ were 2nd and 3rd years... very comparable to Hicks' 3rd year OPS+ @ age 25. -Buxton's career OPS+ is 80. After 4 seasons, and 2 years older than Buck, Hicks' OPS+ was ~75. -Buxton cumulative dWAR in first 4 years- (4.2) -Hicks cumulative dWAR in first 4 years- (0.6) -Buxton cumulative WAR in first 4 years- (6.9) -Hicks cumulative WAR in first 4 years- (2.0) It's still all about Buxton's upside and putting 2018 far in the rear view mirror.... and nothing else. In answering your question... It's pretty obvious the numbers tell us that we play this one out.

Arraez is sort of a Left Hand Hitting, MI Willians Astudillo. Nothing impresses physically to you by just looking at him. He won't steal a base for you. Or hit for power. But he is very similar to Astudillo regarding contact, BBs and Ks. He had the lowest K% rate, by far, in the Southern League @ 8.2%(w/ 195 or more PAs). His LD% was 2nd highest overall in the Southern @ 27.5%. His swinging strike % was 5th best overall, just a little behind contact-king LaMonte Wade. Does he enough range and glove to make it as a UI?

Yep. I must admit, seeing Kohl for the first time in 2018, was a pleasant surprise. His GB%, weak contact skills and legitimately good stuff on a couple of his pitches gives me some hope, particularly when the IF defense is upgraded with Lewis/Javier/Gordon. I also look forward to no longer pulling my hair out watching, waiting, hoping through 6 long years on the farm, that top young arms are still not ready to attack major league bats. Studies have shown that getting the best arms up sooner is the key to maximizing their career-length and effectiveness-longevity.

The problem with this theory is that it was fairly obvious to most on Twins Daily, and elsewhere, that the Stewart "success" in 2015-16 was largely illusory. His peripherals were screaming for major intervention- if- they were going to salvage anything close to an expected rate of return on a #4 overall pick in the draft. Perhaps his struggles in 2017 can be attributed to the first attempted salvage operation implemented by the new FO. It's apparent that 2014-16 were to some extent a waste of developmental time- and given Stewart's current "prospect/suspect" status at age 24 with the clock ticking, a decision on his future with the Twins- and the fate of their multi-million dollar investment, has to be made without knowing for certain if he is deservedly in the long-term plans or not.
