    They rely on the home run to generate runs, with the issue being they don’t have one major home run threat. This is what an offense looks like when your offensive philosophy sucks. As far as Rocco lighting a fire in the players, I suspect there isn’t much respect there… just might explain these lifeless performances.

    When many of us talk about fundamental baseball the premise is playing solid defense, an awareness off opposing base runners and knowing where the ball needs to go to minimize runs, plate discipline to make opposing pitchers earn their outs, advancing runners and timely hitting or driving in runs from 3rd with less than two outs, smart base running, some team speed,etc.. None of the above require superstar talent, it requires effort and a team first philosophy, and most importantly a manager that can sell it and implement. Many of the losses in the past 2-3 weeks could have gone the other way with just a little solid fundamental baseball.

    I would argue the best teams have a defined closer. I would deviate in a playoff series or must win games…. Not willy nilly because of my predestined data/metric points. Duran has struggled outside of save situations…. I believe the data would back that up.

    They have two reliable arms, well some/most days , Jax and Duran. I have no issue deploying Jax where the situation dictates. Duran should be the closer and used in the 9th and extra inning games, just my opinion . Duran really seems to struggle when pitching outside those roles.

    That’s how your closer should be used, only took 130 games to figure it out.

    Big difference between top and bottom playoff team… I’d rather host the wild card series versus being on the road. Higher seeded team has all 3 games if necessary at their park, pretty big advantage.

    Duran should be pitching in save situations, not the 7th inning or up by 5 runs. Rocco may have some responsibility in his erratic performances

    No doubt the injuries are impacting play on the field, however anyone that has watched/followed this team knew that Buxton, Correa, Kirloff and Lewis were all unlikely to make it through the season without a lengthy IL stint at some point. The Ryan injury definitely sucks, fortunately Festa and Matthews have pitched well and are gaining great confidence and experience. The starting rotation has been a bright spot IMO. From the games I get to see the biggest issue is a lack of identity. What are they doing well. Sloppy defense, terrible at advancing runners and hitting with RISP, no team speed, a BP that has 1 -2 reliable arms and a manager that is so intent on his data driven philosophy that there are no set lineups, the closer being used in questionable situations, not allowing the best remaining hitters to face pitchers based on whether they are right or left throwing…. enough on Rocco As I have said before, living in Wisconsin I end up watching a lot of Brewers games. What a difference in approach. Great defense, team speed, advancing runners, timely hitting, will do anything to get a runner in from third with less than two outs, a set lineup, best players play regardless of right/left matchups, defined BP roles and a manager that demands the fundamentals are executed. And yes they have had some big injuries and traded their best starter at the beginning of the season. Point being, you can win when you do the little things well… something we don’t seem capable of the majority of the time.

    Maybe this is why they look disinterested? Rocco’s lineups, pinch hitting early, having your closer pitch in the 7th might have finally taken their toll.

    Yeah… let the one guy who could actually do some damage sit. Yes he is in a funk, it won’t last forever. Rocco might have a spot on the coaching staff for you😉

    Atlanta is missing several starters including an MVP caliber player and yet we are about to get swept at home. Looking like if they make the playoffs it will be an early exit, they don’t compete against quality teams. Unfortunately they are doing enough for another year of Rocco ball, how depressing.

    That was the catalyst to some bad baseball… and of course head scratching managerial decisions. What’s a downer in this series is Atlanta is missing half their team, so the injury excuse won’t cut it.

    Not sure the year Colome was the closer, blown save after save early in the season seemed to set the tone for the rest of the season. Point being, these last two weeks have handed the team some terrible losses in multiple games that should have gone in the W column. It has to be backbreaking and a morale drain. Hoping for the Red Sox to continue their swoon is not the way to get into the playoffs.

    This cannot be an article to be taken seriously. In just the last two weeks his “data” driven decisions have cost the team multiple games. Said it earlier in the season, Pat Murphy, , first year coach is head and shoulders above Rocco.. He has a less talented team and gets the most out of everyone, the sign of a good manager, IMHO

    Maybe the goal should be not to get down 9-1. Playing some of ugliest ball of the season in September is not ideal, pulling for the teams behind us to loss instead of taking care of business is not going to cut it.

    Not great news on the Buxton front. In other news it seems like sending Varland down and giving Matthews a few starts is a no brainer… he looked great in his first start and could be a a reliable 4 or 5 down the stretch.

    I just don’t get how they can look so disinterested in an important game… it happens way too often in the final game of a series. Is the tone set from earlier in the season when Rocco uses his give away lineups like some games don’t matter.. obviously they are going to lose, but the lack of effort at times is head scratching .

    No thanks, the young arms can match his ceiling/poor production which and potentially blow by it.

    Pumped that they are giving Matthews the start. The organization has been reluctant for years to call up young promising players, for what I can only imagine is maintaining team control. If they are performing in the minors and there is a need/opening on the big league team, bring them up and see if they are ready to provide the help needed.

    Going into the series was hoping for a split, very deflating end to the series after the sweep on Friday. Four more games against Cleveland, hoping to still be fighting for a playoff spot come mid-September. Have to take advantage of every quality start from here with the starters we will be running out… the bats need to be better.
