Gray is aging, but he’s still a good pitcher. I don’t think he’ll be as good as he was in 2019, but he still has been solid. Here are his 2021 Baseball Savant rankings:
Hardly an “innings eater”
I think Henriquez could be a solid contributor in the next couple of years. Not a huge fan of the trade now but if Henriquez develops into a solid starter/reliever I have no problem with it.
About half of the players you named are still here. In addition, there is now Lewis, Larnach, Martin, SWR, Ryan, Duran, Winder, Petty, Alcala, Jeffers, Winder, Ober, Donaldson, Maeda to name a few that were added by the current regime.
The organization obviously had talent. There was a solid young core, no doubt in my mind. That doesn’t change the fact that the Twins were exiting their worst season in team history. A lot of the players that drove the 2019 team to 101 wins might have been here when the current regime took over, but very few of them were actually good. Buxton was bad in 2016. Berrios was awful in 2016. The pitching cupboards were nearly bare and that doesn’t even account for the three consecutive wasted Top 6 picks from 2013-15.
I agree with your post except for this statement. They inherited literally the worst team in Twins history. Many of the Ryan-drafted core players that are good today weren’t actually good when the current regime took over.
Not trying to give them a pass for 2021 but to say that the franchise was in a good spot in November of 2016 is not accurate.
That’s a lot of holes to fill in one offseason.
I’ve said this before and I still stand by it, the # of games the Twins win in 2022 will depend on how much the pipeline produces. If it does produce, I think the Twins could have a fighting chance in 2022. But this is the year which that needs to start happening, if there is baseball this year. If it doesn’t then it’s a failure.
What a tough road it has been for Lewis with two consecutive lost seasons (one due to COVID and the other due to an ACL tear). Wish him all the best and I hope he becomes a core piece on the team one day.
Possibly. He did show promise at the Major League level last year (he had an ERA+ of around 100), so I think he could get better in 2022. Of course I could be wrong and we shouldn’t rely on him as one of our top starters
What is there to suggest there’s a strong chance he won’t stick? I mean he’s not going to be the ace of the staff (at least I hope not) but I don’t think it’s unfair to slot him in at one of the 3-5 spots.
I don’t think either of these statements are correct. Donaldson was expected to get more around 4 years/$110M, and the Twins got him for $18M less. He’s lived up to the contract he was given. The Twins didn’t make a mistake.
On the other side of that equation, the Twins looked to be a team going for it in 2020. I don’t think it was foolish for Donaldson to come here. Obviously they came up short in 2020 and then Falvey and Levine made a series of ****-ups that resulted in the disaster of 2021. Maybe it will ultimately be a mistake, but in Donaldson’s case it made sense at the time.
Maybe but don’t forget about the red flag that he plays in Coors. Defensively he’s superb but you probably won’t get the offensive production out of him as a Twin than the offensive production that we’ve seen from him as a Rocky.
