It very well could be a free agent. But I could easily see trading someone like Wallner or Ober or someone that the new coach doesn't see as part of the 2026 team to some team for a catcher too. I don't have any insight as to who that is. But I do think that's a possibility to look into prior to signing a free agent.

That would be a separate transaction. They can certainly trade for someone, or they can sign someone. I'd prefer a strong defender back there, but with some ABS starting next year (at least where people can appeal a ball or strike) I'm curious how that will affect catchers who have historically been stronger at framing compared to blocking or throwing out runners.

Road to a Rebound: Brooks Lee
Cory Engelhardt replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is exactly how they become relevant again. Getting their core hitters to play to their 75% percentile. They don't need to play to career years or even 90th percentile, but have to get closer to where they normally would be. Hopefully the right coaching staff for this purpose can be put in place. -
There is always next year, or at least that's what I still tell myself

In my head I was starting with Mayer and Casas for Ryan, but I don't know how likely that's happening either. Just fun to throw out ideas :)

Agreed, I certainly didn't think of this 100% on my own. But yeah, IF they are trading Ryan (which I'm not advocating for, just saying) I'm firmly in the camp that they have to get help that would be here in 2026.

I would argue that Teel and Montgomery are/were very much in the realm of what Mayer can be. But I see your point. It was JUST a dart throw idea I had. Plus with Boston having Story at SS and Franklin Arias arguably ready in 2027, Mayer to me is someone that could get moved by them. But yeah, I'm not saying that the Twins need Mayer to trade Ryan, but I also think the rumors of the Twins accepting a LOT less than that is going to be crazy too.

I have no idea if it would be accepted or not. But the caliber of prospect that typically get a playoff level starting pitcher (that isn't a free agent to be) has been high end. That's all. But yeah, it could be elsewhere too. And Boston having Story at SS makes it a move that could be plausible. But yeah, I don't know if that'd be agreed to by any means.

I have this working theory that IF they trade Ryan to Boston, some order of players including Marcelo Mayer and Tristan Casas are coming back. IF Ramon Vazquez is brought on as coach, it's something that I absolutely could see. I don't know how all the other pieces fit (this offseason will be super interesting) but let's say by June you have Culpepper at 2b and Mayer at SS. The Twins front office have been linked to Casas for a time, but who knows what he has with his injury history. All of this is to say that I'll probably change my opinion at some point here, but that up the middle is more interesting to me than Lee and Keaschall. Frankly Keaschall could move to 1B if he needs to and probably be pretty decent there in time. All of what I wrote is to be taken with a large amount of salt here. But the 2b/ss combo could look a LOT different in June 2026 than it does today.

Him coming into spring with back issues last year did not bode well for the upcoming season. Maybe what we saw in 2025 is what he is, but hopefully he can have a healthy offseason and then we see what he looks like in the spring. Also, they have to find the right coaching to get through to players. If players continue to regress with a new coaching staff then it's on the player no?

I have a hard time seeing GG being better than Martin. But you aren't wrong. Martin, if he isn't a starting outfielder BECAUSE Rodriguez or Jenkins has debuted and shown they belong, then I think Martin can still have a place as a utility guy no? I mean, Martin (if you like WAR) was worth 1.0 WAR in 50 games according to fangraphs and 0.7 WAR in baseball reference. That's only a 1/3rd of a season. IF he can play like he did in August and September, and gets into more than 100 games, he would grade out as an average MLB player (2.0 WAR.) That is certainly better than replacement level.

I do think they'll need to add a couple of bats at minimum this offseason. My hope is one of them is a 1B or DH that is capable of that too. It likely could be via trade in some cases. But they will need to add some bats one way or the other. They don't have zero power as a team, but I do agree the one thing THIS lineup truly has missed is Nelson Cruz. They were so much better an offense with an actual middle of the order type bat. If they do keep Wallner, I would play him an awful lot more at DH next year than in the field. But is he the right choice for DH? I don't know.
-
Wallner is so tough to gauge for me. He has real power yes, but he needs either a change of scenery or a real focus on everything hitting wise so that he truly isn't 3 outcomes only. But even how the article is written, I'm not certain a 3 outcomes player is a fit on this team right now. If they can move him for a starting catcher or a good prospect of some kind, I'd be open to it.

I don't hate the idea at all of having a starting outfield next year of Martin and Buxton and Rodan. The range there should be a huge improvement over 2025's outfield defense that included Larnach and Wallner. It also gives room for when Rodriguez (if healthy) and Jenkins are ready to debut, and both should also be better defenders than Larnach or Wallner were in terms of range.
-
I'd love Arraez. His defense leaves a LOT to be desired, but he plays every day and gives great at bats. Those are both things this team needs too. I just would prefer if they did get him that he dh's a lot, and that they ALSO get someone who can be a good defender at 1b. But yeah, maybe the plan is for one of their current infielders to move to 1B?

Josh Naylor (depending on whoever the mystery investors are) is most likely out of their price range. I do think Falvey knowing him from his time in Cleveland doesn't hurt, but I don't see that happening. He is more of a pipe dream for me. But yeah, his defense and attitude and experience hitting in the middle of the order is exactly what this team hasn't had for years now. Ryan O'Hearn is someone that I'd love to get. His range at 1B is pretty solid, and he has experience in the central and with our (current) hitting coach. He's looked pretty good with the Padres too. I don't know if he'll NEED more than a 1 year deal or 1 year and an option. Beyond that, honestly, I'd probably more be looking at the trade market. Naming off names there feels like a shot in the dark, but it's certainly possible that some team really likes giving a chance on Bailey Ober or Matt Wallner for someone who could be a bounce back here too.

I should add, I really want them to have someone at 1B next year who is at least average if not above average defensively. I don't really care if it is a free agent or via trade. There are definitely options available.
