Game log of Balazovic's day: Lansing Bottom of the 1st Samad Taylor strikes out swinging. Kevin Vicuna grounds out, shortstop Michael Davis to first baseman Ben Rodriguez. Chavez Young strikes out swinging. Lansing Bottom of the 2nd Ryan Noda grounds out softly, shortstop Michael Davis to first baseman Ben Rodriguez. Ryan Gold doubles (5) on a fly ball to right fielder Jean Carlos Arias. Freddy Rodriguez walks. Reggie Pruitt walks. Ryan Gold to 3rd. Freddy Rodriguez to 2nd. Jesus Navarro called out on strikes. Reilly Johnson singles on a line drive to right fielder Jean Carlos Arias. Ryan Gold scores. Freddy Rodriguez scores. Reggie Pruitt to 3rd. Samad Taylor triples (4) on a fly ball to right fielder Jean Carlos Arias. Reggie Pruitt scores. Reilly Johnson scores. Pitching Change: Derek Molina replaces Jordan Balazovic. Kevin Vicuna lines out to center fielder Akil Baddoo. He was rolling. Perhaps two long innings by the hitters threw him off? Anyway, I just wanted to dig a little deeper on this one. Maybe not as bad as it looks at first glance. Good day for Thorpe; nice to see him pitch well after getting rocked in the Futures game. For as disheartening as the Twins bullpen has been, I'm disappointed that Moya, Curtiss, Reed, and Duffey haven't seized the bull by the horns. They might be useful pieces, but none of them look like answers to me.

The mistakes have been fairly pointed out, and I don't disagree. Especially with rostering Kinley and Haley over just about any other options. I would point out that this FO has had some successes as well. In regard to Niko Goodrum--I think they successfully avoided a Goodrum 2.0 situation by trading Palacios for Odorizzi. Not to make this a referendum on Odorizzi's performance--just pointing out they traded a guy who profiles an awful lot like Goodrum before it was too late. They were successful in salvaging Kintzler off the scrap heap, eventually turning him into a non-40 man prospect--although Watson has all the look in the world of eventually being one of those guys who gets drafted in the Rule V and then struggles on someone's roster. What is the baseline ratio for Rucinzki to Kintzler's needed to call a FO successful? 10-1? 1-1? 0-1? Jake Cave, thus far, has been a success story. All the more so, perhaps, because on a team with Buxton/Kepler/Rosario supposedly clogging the outfield for years, aggressively going after Cave was rather prescient. I'm glad he's on the team right now, and not Hazelnut Kreamer. I'm just not of the belief you can slap together 95-100 wins worth of WAR and expect to actually win. This team is currently in a "playoff" situation for the next few weeks. The lessons learned could be invaluable if this team wants to win at the highest level next year or the year after.

Article: GM For A Deadline, Part One
Han Joelo replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I can see a team feeling wishy-washy about trading an elite prospect for two full seasons of Yin/Yang Dozier. There would be months of griping as he works through his off cycle. But, a playoff team going all-in by picking up a red hot Dozier? Especially when maybe packaged with a "name" lefty reliever like Duke? Sure, why not. Seriously, names, ages, sentimentality aside--Dozier on the warpath at second base might be just as much WAR value in the second half as Machado at SS. Maybe not Machado at third...- 77 replies

Just when they've become forgotten, Tyler Jay and Kohl Stewart have good games. Wait, did I say forgotten? Wrong word. They'll never be forgotten, that's for sure. Neither will be Clayton Kershaw, which was my hope, but they both might still turn out to be useful MLB players. Or not.

I was going to say this was completely unrelated to anything written in this report, as neither pitched. But I guess they are listed on the top 20 prospects. There are quite a few articles where you could debate the consensus rating Seth, Jeremy, and Tom gave them. Or go check out Thrylos's blog entry on his top 60.

What is truly sensational about that clip of Curtiss--and the play was pretty awesome--is the explosion of hair that occurs as his hat falls off. At first watch. I thought he was wearing a batting helmet...a rather large batting helmet. After watching a few times, I realized it wasn't a batting helmet, but rather, this:

Hope does still spring eternal with me. I think that is the whole reason I bother being a fan (and also a school teacher.). Player development is almost a sport in and of itself--it is less like chess, and more like ping-pong, than most people like to admit. So many variables, but in the end sometimes the ball doesn't bounce your way. The Twins obviously whiffed by taking Tyler Jay at 6 and passing on Benintendi. Would the Red Sox have done the same thing if the spots were reversed? Who knows, and who cares, really. We only have this one reality to live in, and right now the Twins have a recent track record of top picks not working out...at least compared to some hand-picked teams. I'm thrilled with the state of the farm system, and I'm starting to wonder if we aren't massively underrating Kiriloff. A couple of years from now fans on other teams websites may be lamenting the failure of their front office to identify this kid.

If I was going to make a bet about the roster in five years, I'd put some money on Miranda and Balazovic. But I don't really quibble with Nick's list either, kind of just highlights the depth of the system.

Thanks for this compilation. Nice to see some of the DSL guys singled out; I don't usually pay much attention to those guys. Its always fun to mine the 28 day and full season numbers for hidden nuggets. Here's three I found: Blaine Enlow's peripheral's haven't changed (except Whip--that's lower) but his ERA has plummeted. Lewin Diaz has more than doubled his season BB% over the last 28 days. Lewis Thorpe and Bailey Ober have obscenely high KK/BB ratios over the last 28 days.

That is awesome about Rodney's reason for pitching early. I mean, in a storytelling, makes you think kind of way. Especially (toes the line tentatively) in these days of immigration...issues. Maybe this will give Molitor some inspiration. And apologies to Yarniveck, if you read this. You sniffed this(or at least something) out in the game thread--touche.

Article: Front Office Flop for the Twins?
Han Joelo replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not sure if this goes along with this thread, but it was interesting (probably the wrong word) to see that Cardinals management fired Matheny and two coaches, despite sitting just 4 games back. I guess I don't see that happening with the Twins, but I couldn't help but feel while watching Astudillo pitch yesterday that his body language was screaming WTF am I doing out here? Baseball is cruel--he finally gets his change at the Big Leagues, and he is on the mound before he is behind the plate.- 134 replies

Article: TB 19, MIN 6: This Never Happened
Han Joelo replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I didn't watch the game via my free MLB.tv trial subscription, the first one I've missed. I did turn it on to watch Willians pitch a little bit. I agree--he was just a little too good, but still not good enough. I'm not sure what the purpose of saving Magill was, nor do I understand the presence of an injured Slegers on the roster. In the end, this was on Berrios. I look forward, hopefully, to the day when he does lock down his "ace" status and figure out how to dominate a game like this. Playing for Molitor should teach him not to leave anything to chance. -
I'm really enjoying my free MLB.tv subscription so far. For every player we lament the Twins letting get away or never developed, there are real success stories, like Cave (so far) and Hildenberger. The damn Yankees haunt the Twins again, though, with losing to Cleveland.

Not going to quibble with the Hitter of the Day--pretty tough choice. Rooker did have a heck of a day at the plate and on the base paths, though.

Brusdar. Kiriloff. Royce. What ever Nick Gordon's rap name is, P-Schniztel or whatever. And of course Stephen. Nice set of monikers.- 74 replies

Article: Twins Daily Roundtable: Second Half Star
Han Joelo replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Reading through everyone's responses reaffirms yet again how crappily the offense has played--and how much potential this team has. The writers were fairly convincing in their reasons, so I can believe it is possible. The Twins had two "stars" the first half, imagine if they had 6 or 7 in the second.- 16 replies

For some reason I'm just stunned that that was Jeffers first homer. I thought it was like maybe his eight. I guess because it is still a smaller sample, but he's slugging nearly .500, but only has 5 total xbh. Great game for E-town anyway; man they've dropped the hammer on a few teams this year. Erv's nickname is Jumbo Shrimp? Did not know that. Wild, wacky stuff. Did you know that Ed?

Article: KC 9, MIN 4: Slegers Slayed by Royals
Han Joelo replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In Logan's defense, he hasn't gotten the opportunity to run the bases much this year, so forgive him for forgetting to stop. But seriously, seems like a classic case of trying to do too much, a hallmark of a "tight" team. I hate it when pinch hitters hit into double plays, like Grossman did for Cave in the 7th. And, just for the sake of my level of engagement, I'd sure rather see Romero pitching. Sleger seems like a good kid. Nothing personal.- 25 replies

You know what I would actually watch? A four team round robin. The other two teams would be a team of snubs voted on by the players, and then the fourth team would be put together by the Fangraphs guys. Or something like that. Each player would pick a small town or neighborhood to play for, and if they won, every kid in that neighborhood gets baseball equipment. If they lose, they don't get nothing, not even a trophy.
