  1. ...and by sticker price I do not mean the Twins have to go all Grienke or Annibal Sanchez every off-season. They just need to understand that to be competitive they will need to pay for that quality of a pitcher eventually. That may mean trading for an established one (or two) with prospects or paying with MLB players for minor league high upside talent. Acquiring arms is the MOST important and best strategy to build a winning team. Pitching will always keep a team competitive!
  2. One of the problems in the Twins front office is it seems they do not want to overspend. EVER. Shopping at Goodwill, may get you a great deal, but there is a reason it is at Goodwill. To get quality, sometimes you need to pay full-sticker price to get what you want. Contending teams need front of the rotation starters. Bargain shopping for the Pelfrey's and Correia's (or even the Ortiz and Ponson variety) doesn't put this organization into contention. This has worked with Pavano and with no one else! The Twins need to balance their "thriftiness" with market-level (sticker price) spending.
  3. Finding "diamonds in the rough" isn't Terry Ran's issue, IMO. I have said all along that he is a good scout and has the eye to find talent. His issues are in assembling a Major League roster.
  4. If there is anyway that Diamond is being considered for a starting spot we are still in major trouble. Meyer, Gibson, May all need to be in the starting rotation with two others that are likely not in our organization currently. I wouldnt be surprised if Ryan Pressley is stretched out to become a starter as well. Burton will be gone and Fien will fill in as the setup guy. I also wouldn't rule out Florimon still being here. Dozier isn't going to go back to SS, IMO. Mauer will still be the everday catcher in 2015, IMO as well. Pinto primary backup. Hermann will fill a backup catcher/4th OF role. Parmalee will be 1st base or bust by 2015.
  5. @jorgenwest I am going to have to disagree with you as well. This is definitely a top 10 bullpen. With more opportunities, it is also more opportunities to implode. Argument can work both ways. The bullpen has been excellent. They may not be much individually, but as a unit they are managed well and do a very good job.
  6. I think Ryan's greatest strength is that he is a scout at heart. That is great for finding talent around the minors (in other people's system) or for the draft-eligible guys. But when it comes to assembling a major league team I think that is an obvious weakness. He seems like he is the last one to the dance time after time. He only wants to take safe, low-risk players in FA, when sometimes a franchise needs to roll the dice and hope everything works out. Too many Slowey, Blackburn, Swarzak, Correia, etc, etc, etc type of pitchers. They are usually pretty durable, but THEY SUCK!!! Take a chance. Would a 1 year deal for Shawn Marcum have been a worse deal than the 2 year deal Correia is on? Who cares in the middle of a(nother) 90+ loss season. Take some chances. I hope Brian Cashman gets fired and the Twins snatch him up!
  7. The most disappointing thing about this season is not seeingany progress from Trevor Plouffe or Chris Parmalee. We all knew our pitching staff was going to be awful, but held out hope for of the young bats to breakthrough.
  8. People around the league (around the deadline) had said he would be in the 1 year @ $2-3 million range. Little chance of a long-term deal.
  9. I would go after a veteran like Josh Johnson on a one year deal in FA as well as a hitter like Mark Reynolds to play 1B/3B/DH to both serve as guys to bridge the gap, but also provide upside. Both guys still 30.
  10. Guys like Dozier are a dime a dozen. Jamey Carroll would probably net more.
  11. If I could 'like' this a thousand times I would! The Twins lineup is below average at EVERY position, with the exception of catcher. Seriously people, below average everywhere! The only passes I give this year are to Hicks (rookie with promise) and maybe Florimon (first full season at MLB, glove has been pretty solid too). As soon as Rosario is ready, even if its on Opening Day 2014 he needs to get the nod. Dozier can move to utility role.
  12. HIGHLY DOUBTFUL. Why suspend the #3 prospect in baseball, when he is just starting to find his groove in AA? The pimpingof the homer deserved at most a 2 game suspension, if he was contrite, likely just the next day. No way that Sano dropped a "Yes, Sir" and was suspended 4 games.
  13. I think the Sano's defiance "earned" him the additional games. This may have very well been a "I hate the other guy and I lost my mind a bit," but he showed disrespect to his manager, which to me is far worse than having a momentary lapse in judgement after hitting a bomb. The slow trot was worth maybe one game and the treatment to poor treatment of his manager was the other 3 games. What's more damaging: Being treated poorly by someone in the family or that someone treating someone else poorly? If you're treating your own family poorly, you need to sit down and re-evaluate some things.
  14. I strongly disagree with your dream target. The Twins have Pinto and drafted 3 catchers in the very early rounds. Including Hermann, there are plenty of catchers in the organization that could break through. Once upon a time, Austin Romine was considered the next big stud catcher in their system (as was Jesus Montero). Not a fan of any of these prospects.
  15. YES! Sano is definitely on the plus side of at least 220!
  16. How much of the drafting of college relievers turn them starters is to really make them MLB starters? Obviously, there is something to getting low-mileage arms, but could getting these relievers to develop there secondary pitches, before returning them to relievers again be in the cards? I just havent ever heard of the draft relievers to make them starters strategy ever before.
  17. David Ortiz diagrees with you. He plays himself some DH!!!
  18. I think @Nick Nelson nailed it with this, "He gets wild and hands out way too many walks from time to time, but he doesn't get hit hard." In theory, Deduno could walk 3 guys per inning and not give up a run. Whereas guys like, Diamond or Blackburn give up tons of hard hit balls that result in not just singles but extra bases. Hits are worse than walks. Let's have a little more of the controlled chaos!!!
  19. Name one player or pitcher that Gardenhire or Anderson have developed into a great player... ???
  20. It is absolutely coaching, but also the front office. I have not had the luxury of ever coaching baseball (higher than local little league stuff), but I have spent 8 years coaching high school and college basketball. IMO, coaching is coaching. Set aside the X's and O's and even techniques for a minute. Players have to be placed and played to their strengths and to their personalities. If the Twins Way is to have a certain approach at the plate (see Morneau and Mauer), then why do they trade away guys like Garza for Delmon Young? Or have Carlos Gomez be the centerpiece of a Johan trade? Delmon is Delmon, everyone (BA, ESPN, etc) thought he was going to be a star, but his free-swinging ways don't fit our organizational philosophy. Gomez the same thing. These guys were trying to be converted at the ML level, not at the time they were drafted or signed three and four years prior. They had to learn this new "way" on the fly and it was a square peg in a round hole.
  21. I can't answer that either, but if the Twins did "eat" the remaining balance of Morneau's salary (approx $6million) I would assume the Twins would think of this similar to the draft or an international prospect. Would the Twins pay $6 million as signing bonus money for the handful of prospects that Morneau would fetch? My answer is no. If the money was closer to $2-3, then possibly. The Twins paid $6M to sign Buxton and $4+ to sign Stewart. I don't think they like the idea to give away a fan favorite and pay $6M and not get great/elite talent in return. The Marlins' prospects (Matt Dominguez being the headliner) were not elite by any stretch. Morneau's salary will not be "eaten" unless a team is willing to throw in something very substantial in a package that includes, a top 50 talent (which isn't going to happen). The Twins are about as fiscally conservative as it gets.
  22. Morneau can and should be traded. Just like the Carlos Lee example, someone will pay to get the last few drop out of Justin Morneau. Morneau can still hit, btw. He just isn't hitting HR's. He is a much better player than Lee was last year at the same time. Look at what James Loney is doing in TB, compared to his recent time in LA. A change in scenery may be what gets him going. No on the move of Plouffe. There is not an in-house option to replace him until likely late 2014 (Sano) and he isn't part of the problem. MOVE Perkins. His value is through the roof. He's the best pitcher on the market and he's cheap, so every team could be bidding for his services, not just the high-rollers. His vaue will never be higher and his value to a losing team is miniscule.
  23. I heard that same conversation/interview and my interpretation was different. I took it as, Ryan seeks counsel of others not on just his ideas, but the scouts and all parties involved and if he is the outlier, he will concede to the group. Not a my way or the highway type of attitude. I personally don't mind Terry Ryan when he is evaluating talent, I just do not like how he builds the ML club. He is and as stated that he is a scout at heart and he does that part well. But the offseason deals and signings seem to be an area of weakness for him and his staff. I would prefer a complete FO office sweep and let a new GM handle the trading of Perkins. Almost any failed ML starters can develop into a solid reliever. i would be surprised if a guy like Pelfrey turned into a solid to great closer. He's got numerous pitches and velocity, plus he would only have to go one inning. Perkins is replaceable.
  24. No team should ever intentionally tank in the MLB! Players are far to competitive and driven to succeed to do this, so it would be management putting overwhelmed players in this situation. Loading the lineup with AAA or even AA caliber players. But, if the Twins moved Morneau, Willingham and let's say Perkins for a haul of prospects (cumulatively) and it gave Colabello, Parmalee and Tonkin a chance to see what they could do with full time at bats or as a ML closer, then I can tolerate the losing, because the end game is to make your team better in the long-term. To tank for a draft position is not a good enough excuse as the baseball draft is too much of a crapshoot (compared to NFL and NBA). We have seen that Plouffe and Dozier are improving wth regular at bats.
