  1. I wonder that too when I watch him run down the first base line. Sometimes a gamer can get the opposite reputation with fans if he plays hurt and doesn't broadcast it.
  2. It can be looked up. This year in 51 PA with runners in scoring position and two out, he's batting .342 with power for a 1.141 OPS. But don't let that get in the way of a good rant.
  3. Carnac: "Superior, Wisconsin." Ed: Superior, Wisconsin. Carnac: Superior, Wisconsin. Ed: That is the answer to the question found in the envelope you are holding? Carnac: You catch on faster than Burt Reynolds buying drinks for Loni Anderson. Ed: No one could aspire to that kind of speed, mental or otherwise. Carnac: No one? Ed: WIth the exception of yourself, of course. Carnac: You are too kind. Correct, but kind. Ed: We all are awed by your presence. Carnac: Really? That's it? No veiled gibe? This is unexpected. Ed: Simple as that. Carnac: May the fleas of a thousand camels leave you alone this once. Ed: Thank you, Your Magnificence. Would you be so kind as to open the envelope? Carnac: "What city is ranked nationally just behind Inferior, Minnesota?"
  4. Most threads run their course naturally. A few need to be put out of their misery, as beyond a certain point no genuinely new points are being made. This thread has long been past this point, and I'm closing it down.
  5. Aaron Slegers did not get the decision in an 8-4 comeback win over Syracuse Sunday afternoon. Rochester did not take the lead for good until the 8th inning. Slegers went only 5 innings and gave up all 4 runs, 3 of them earned, on 7 hits and 2 walks, plus one wild pitch. He did strike out 6. Syracuse didn't break through for a tally until the third, but there were baserunners in every inning. This broke an informal streak of 5 quite good games where he had gone at least six and two-thirds innings. It also broke a streak of 8 straight starts where he was credited with a W.
  6. I wasn't contradicting your meaning, merely offering a possibly-interesting meaning from baseball's distant past.
  7. 150 years ago "muffin" had a specific baseball meaning, and not a complimentary one. It meant the player just wasn't very good.
  8. I don't know about the last two guys, but no Maas. No Maas. http://static.boxrec.com/thumb/e/ee/Roberto-Duran.jpg/200px-Roberto-Duran.jpg
  9. I have some sympathy with your POV, but the comps you chose share a certain element in common: on defense each was considered passable in CF, at least on a short-term/backup basis, or better. ABWIII is purely a corner OF candidate, and from what I heard not very well regarded in even that limited role (the little I saw him in person I don't recall anything one way or the other). The standards for hitting are a lot higher on the corners. It would be a bit like lobbying for a 3B prospect, and pointing to a succession of SS with worse batting numbers who were tried in preference.
  10. http://hot.tgbus.com/news034/images/pic/enter_01.jpg These are all interesting and creative, but I looked it up and the name is spelled Slegers. (He's my Adopt-A-Prospect, and I gotta stick up for him.)
  11. I see that he was recognized for the same honor for the month of July. Kudos to the young man.
  12. TD game threads are such an educational experience.
  13. Colon may be even older than we realized. From Dozier's postgame interview: "I faced Bartolo five or six years ago when he was probably 96...".
  14. I don't know what Patrick Borzi wants from an interview. A GM isn't going to make definitive statements on hypotheticals or things several months away.
  15. In addition to noting his age, it's also well to consider that Rortvedt's stats include a horrendous start to the season. The numbers all count, of course, but when evaluating a prospect I think you want to check whether he's moving in the right direction. Since mid-May, he's posted a very presentable .267 BA with a little bit of pop and selectivity, leading to an OPS just north of .700. He's not tearing the cover off the ball, but a promotion next year to high-A would not surprise me. He's been pushed because of good reviews behind the plate, I'm pretty certain. The way he flailed around in April was not pretty. But it's debatable, given how he's going now, whether he would have been better served by hitting, say, .300 at E-town.
  16. Essential to it being satire. Which is what makes it tricky to pull off. I try to remind myself not to do it here on TD - that is, when I notice I'm doing it.
  17. Felix has bounced back with a couple of extremely nice games. Saturday night July 29 he went the first nine innings of the 21-inning (!) 2-1 win over the Birmingham Barons. He surrendered only four hits and no walks, striking out eight. The run came in the first inning, on a double and a single followed by a fielding error by third baseman T.J.White, but after that Felix was nearly untouchable, and he finished up by retiring the final 18 batters he faced. I won't try to detail the game itself, except to say that the Lookouts waited until the bottom of the ninth to tie the score and had a chance to win it right there but T.J.White got hisself picked offa first base after being intentionally walked. Ohhhhh, :shoot: that guy. You can read the rest about the game here. Then yesterday, August 3 against the Montgomery Biscuits, Jorge followed up with a game only slightly less impressive: seven and two-thirds innings, four hits (again) plus two walks, notching five strikeouts. This time no runs were scored against him, and Nick Anderson came on to finish the shutout. The two games bring his season ERA down to 3.51. Oh, and he garnered Twins Daily Minor League Pitcher of the Day honors. If he's bucking for a September callup, he's on the right track now.
  18. Trump Says Mueller Just Called Him and Said He’s the Most Innocent Person Ever (I know that all this sort of satire does is make me feel smug while riling up the 85% of country who support Trump and make them dig in their heels further. But I can't help myself.)
  19. Think of all the predictions people made in 2013 concerning 2016, and how well they panned out. I am willing to say nothing of any greater predictive power than "watch what happens next."
  20. Yes and yes. When MLB rules use the word "land" they mean that it touches the ground or other feature of the park. Rules like this would make no sense if landing in a fielder's glove counted: "If a fly ball lands in the infield between home and first base, or home and third base, and then bounces to foul territory without touching a player or umpire and before passing first or third base, it is a foul ball" (Guys also fall into dugouts and into the stands in foul territory every now and then.)
  21. Yes. But that'un never landed.
  22. You'll note how the announcer extols the fans for their classy response. This matches my own personal experience at the ballpark. Knowledgeable fans for the most part. A metric boatload of quotes and analysis surrounding the play can be found here.
  23. http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2017/08/505709/ The latest, direct from the horse's mouth. At least, I think that's the orifice involved.
