  1. Interesting. In effect you're attaching a position to Kaepernick, by telling him what he's better off doing, when you don't actually know what he's trying to accomplish. I hope you don't alienate him. For as long as I can remember, when someone stands up to air a grievance, there are those who reflexively say, "sit down, you're rockin' the boat". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJq7J2uzSlc
  2. Not that I particularly advocate tanking the season, but if you can't trust your GM to make decisions for the good of the team and not his own (very understandable) self-interest, he should be replaced now. It's just the nature of the job.
  3. Let alone, spell it. (Yeah, I had to be that guy.)
  4. I'm not quite sure if you covered this or not, but the table of situations and probabilities is based on the outcome of what the manager calls for. But the bunter does not always produce what was asked. Sometimes the bunter pops up, sometimes he fails twice and has to hit away with two strikes (at which point any batter is much poorer). If bunting was 100% effective, it would be a different story. That might be the disconnect.
  5. It's the manager's job to put players in the best situation for them to succeed. A select few players on the roster are good enough to play day-in and day-out. The rest need to be managed. What I'm unclear on is to what degree Kennys's stats are padded by this kind of cherry-picking of opportunities by the manager(s). I think it's not really very much; his low numbers of PA are due to injury or being sent to the minors, rather than being inserted in the lineup when facing an easy pitcher for example. So that 500 AB threshold is indeed the question, and I don't know how to answer it. If he is only one batting-coach tip away from becoming the guy you can simply insert in the lineup and forget about him, then you have to keep him. If not, and his stats reflect astute management, you let him become some other team's problem. I wish I knew. But my instinct is to bring him back another year.
  6. "Say, aren't you the spokesman for that one milk company? I see you on all their cartons."
  7. Anyone who has, for instance, worked for a multinational company and brought an overseas colleague to a game will understand that "but, but, but PATRIOTISM!" isn't actually an unassailable argument for playing the SSB in that circumstance. The whole tradition looks very strange to anyone coming in from outside. (Of course it's the nature of the fascist to be very wary of outsiders in the first place, but I digress.)
  8. "Sorry about your flood. Say, and don't forget about that interest payment due this week. We're open until 5 pm sharp."
  9. Ah, a fellow SABR member, I see.
  10. Mod note: Rather than remove this post, let me remind everyone here that even in a heated topic like politics, we do require posters to maintain a level of respect and decency in what we say to each other. Implying, much less saying, that someone's comments are "insanely idiotic" (et cetera a la Billy Madison) is out of bounds at any time. Rebut if you can and wish to, or ignore, but don't insult.
  11. I'm as stats oriented as the next geek, but there's a psychological side to the game, and I have no reason to believe Molitor can't read what's going on in a player's mind to some degree. Maybe sitting a few games against lefties shifts the player's attention away from "Ugh, there's another lefty going against us today" and toward "Ugh, I'm not in a major league lineup today." Does that make a guy hit better? Maybe not directly, but getting one's mind off one thing ("lefties") and focusing on another ("I like having a job") sometimes helps. I don't see a reason to believe Kepler's been given up on as a fulltime player, and I'm not inclined to quibble about small-bore decision-making.
  12. Checking in late, this is all I need to know. Thanks.
  13. I think Jaykay is referring to the stats from back in May, seen under Dave's name, as part of his profile.
  14. Hey Brian, my dad's birthday was the day before yours, and we took him to Red Lobster too. So. congratulations: you have something in common with a 95 year old man.
  15. I no longer have confidence in the electorate, even for extreme cases like this. The drip just inures too many people to the present horrifying reality. Day 1: a dead body Day 2: denials of involvement Day 3: bloody knife found Day 4: denials of involvement - "fake news" Day 5: fingerprints found on the knife Day 6: denials of involvement - "media bias" ... Day 100: indictment for murder Day 101: "there is nothing new here - time to move on"
  16. I had to look up Munoz's first name because it looked like typo. Apparently I've been remiss as a prospect watcher. Here's hoping he becomes a household name and everyone comes to know how to spell it.
  17. I need to get down there sometime. It's a little off the beaten path for me.
  18. Unlike the Doug Mientkiewicz case, Rasmussen may or may not plan to continue his career on the field. If he does, finding a new job may be difficult at his age. So I hope this was not a close decision for the FO, because it has a different kind of impact on the guy's life.
  19. Moderator's note: Folks, I've needed to take action on multiple posts so far in this thread. Three so far. Please don't be the fourth. Keep the discussion respectful toward others.
  20. This was the largest audience to witness a football game, period - both in person and around the world.

  22. I watched the first half of the episode that was on last night after the game, before being called away to other matters - was that a rerun of the pilot, or the second episode? It had the dude sitting on an egg. I loved Family Guy, was meh about the teddy bear movie, but this is so strained. I can't see this show lasting another month, but I am usually wrong about episodic TV.
  23. This was my emerging conclusion during the election process, confirmed with a shock on election night. The things brought out in the course of his campaign should have been disqualifying. Instead, a sizable portion of the electorate considered it a platform to run on. I look at my neighbors a little more askance now; the black hearts are a lot more numerous than I knew.

  25. Prescient. Win or lose, getting called away for a few hours and then reading this thread before waiting for Gameday to take its sweet time loading up is entertaining. Season. Over.
