  1. Minor technical matter, but I expect he won't retire until after the season. He incurred his latest injury while performing baseball duties, so he deserves to get paid and this can be done while on the 60-day DL. Same diff, as far as rosters go of course...
  2. That was part of the joke in that movie, I suppose.
  3. What they do in the minors doesn't necessarily relate to major league lineup decisions. If Granite will ever make an impact on the big club, it will be as a leadoff type. They're giving him the chance. If he doesn't reach the potential they see in him, it doesn't really matter how they develop a #9 hitter (or career AAAA player, or DFA candidate).
  4. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/29789-article-get-to-know-miracle-catcher-taylor-grzelakowski/ Seth's article from a few weeks ago.
  5. It did filter its way down through the management chain, didn't it?
  6. Circus Boy will expect demand score updates.
  7. It was a CEO look for about 6 weeks in the, what, 1990s?
  8. July 26-29, at least. Hm, a good time for a deadline deal. They'll save a ton on airfare.
  9. What are you talking about, he's one of the most sought-after players in the game! From b-r.com: September 14, 2017: Selected off waivers by the San Francisco Giants from the Minnesota Twins. November 20, 2017: Selected off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies from the San Francisco Giants. December 11, 2017: Selected off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates from the Philadelphia Phillies. January 18, 2018: Selected off waivers by the San Francisco Giants from the Pittsburgh Pirates. January 26, 2018: Traded by the San Francisco Giants to the Baltimore Orioles for player to be named or cash. Just one off-season!
  10. I'll have to go review the newspaper account to see what adjective was used. A home run was involved, so probably not "stellar".
  11. 2. Aaron Sleegers would prefer you refer to him by the name on his birth certificate, Slegers. Aaron Sledgers and Aaron Slaygars would also make this request. On the other hand A. A. Ron Slegers represents a different category. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd7FixvoKBw
  12. "Low-leverage"? I was using the term pretty loosely. Maybe a little humorously, although I'm hard pressed to explain the joke. Not even being allowed to work through a bases loaded jam certainly isn't classic mop-up, where even a grand slam won't immediately affect the outcome. OTOH a mop-up situation in the 7th is maybe a bigger lead than one in the 9th. Go with "low-leverage" if you prefer; it was a good situation to bring Hughes in, was the main meaning I wanted to get across.
  13. Probably it doesn't have to. My recollection of Catchers' ERA studies is that the supposed ability doesn't carry over very well from one season to the next, the way that batting average and home run power and pitchers' ERA do.
  14. Concur. I'm not ready to believe the hitting slump is over, quite yet.
  15. I don't know if this was reported elsewhere, but Phil Hughes made his NL debut last night and I watched his ninth-inning mop-up appearance on mlb.tv. At first it was encouraging. He had really excellent location, hitting the corners and tempting batters just outside. But, the stuff wasn't there, and a couple of guys got clean singles off of him on pitches that got too much of the plate, and after a walk he had the bases loaded and needed help from Brad Hand to get the final out. His Padres ERA thus stands at a clean 0.00.
  16. Aaron was called up to the big club on May 30 and was put to immediate use that night when Fernando Romero failed to make it out of the second inning at Kansas City. My guy acquitted himself pretty well, carrying the load for the next 5.1 innings and limiting further damage to 2 runs during that time; he struck out 3. The offense made a partial comeback but couldn't quite pull it off, but Aaron would have gotten the win if they had. He's back in Rochester now, so he can rest up while a fresh arm (Duffey's) is available in the Twin Cities.
  17. Since last report Ben has run his hitting streak to 6 games, capped (for now) with a 3-for-4 performance against the Wisconsin Rimber Tattlers on May 30. He got a couple of doubles, and also a walk, while batting in a run and scoring one of his own. His season batting average now stands at .285 and his OPS is a respectable .740. Things are moving in the right direction and a mid-season promotion to Ft Myers doesn't seem far-fetched.
  18. Paradoxically, no. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeno_of_Elea https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeno_of_Citium
  19. Confirms suspicions when he went on this most recent DL stint. I don't know why it had to be kept secret.
  20. Shane Bieber turns 23 today. Let's hope he is sent home in tears for his birthday just as Jose Berrios was on his.
  21. At the moment I'd choose Rosario. Hitting .300 with some pop is a nice All-Star portfolio in this era.
