  1. One pitcher gets his appearances cherry-picked by the best analytics the team can muster. The other is told by the manager, "go as hard as you can, for as long as you can". The disparity in performance might not hold up if either one found himself in a different role.
  2. I made it through top of seven. What do I win?
  3. Twins Daily: come for the baseball, stay for the remedial class in cultural literacy.
  4. He might also combine an average propensity for random injuries (broken toe from a foul ball) with a propensity to hurt himself by going a little too much all-out (crashing into walls and other outfielders).
  5. Is Max Muncy just really bad at sliding, or was that an attempt at a dirty play to end the first?
  6. I have to say, the Boston local media are pretty hard to take. I sat through a couple of hours of a cable TV call-in show today in which the hosts kept referring to the Dodgers manager as numnutz and repeatedly called Dozier "D.J." because apparently they thought it was funny. I enjoyed driving through Boston and listening to WEEI the day of October 17, 2004, when the Sox were down 3-0 to the Yankees, much better. There was a certain degree of, shall we say, humility that is not present today. Oh, who am I kidding, it was wailing and gnashing of teeth. Delicious. Bill Freakin' Buckner this, and Bob Freakin' Stanley that. All the ghosts of the past were coming back to haunt them, as they anticipated final doom that night against those entitled Yankees. Sadly, never again. Now they're entitled, too.
  7. Sid was 52 when Rocco Altobelli opened his first salon.
  8. Eh, the other teams will probably be confused too. Try to sneak him through!
  9. They never made any because they were too common.
  10. These were better streets.
  11. Brazil, Venezuela... eh, they're all the same. Somebody should have acquainted Eduardo with Yelp.
  12. Be aware that the Series moves to LA next. But I'm sure the taverns in Boston will be jumping - moreso than in Hartford.
  13. I guess Joe Espada was indeed a serious candidate, so nothing could be decided until the Astros' season was over. But apparently after talking to him the FO still liked Rocco better - or, Espada is leaning toward Toronto? And apparently there were no Red Sox or Dodgers candidates the Twins wanted to interview. So here we are. I'm glad they didn't drag this out. I have no independent opinion on the decision. Cautiously optimistic, because that's the way I roll.
  14. I was just about to post that those who find strikeouts boring should watch that Hernandez AB.
  15. I don't know if this is relevant, since it's nothing to do with the game, but I wandered around the streets surrounding Fenway last night, and posted my observations here: http://twinsdaily.com/blog/159/entry-11254-the-cheapskates-guide-to-attending-the-world-series/
  16. It's a projection, but not that much different than today. Adding up some numbers at http://worldpopulationreview.com/states/ I come up with the top 15 states at 66% of the total US population, meaning that 35 states (70 senators) are 34%. For the sake of this discussion, that seems strong enough, even if someday it drops even further to 30% or whatever. On the other side of the coin, it's not the case that small states monolithically vote a certain way. Tiny little Vermont, Rhode Island, Hawaii and Delaware reliably vote for the Democratic ticket, and various other low-population states can be considered swing states, although not very important swing states in presidential elections since they don't control a lot of electoral college votes. I don't like it, but it's not hopeless.
