  1. Depends on your taste for control pitching versus power arms, I would think.
  2. Concur. On paper, their big trade addresses weakness, by dealing away from strength. But I think intangibles are going to play a bigger role than usual for them. The guy they discarded was polarizing, and they replaced him with someone differently polarizing. I don't believe this balances out, and instead could be somewhat additive. I don't know anything about Dyson's public personality, but judging by Romo's early interactions, along with previous roster additions, it seems the Twins FO places a significant premium on chemistry and fit. As someone more from the analytic side of the spectrum... I think they may actually be onto something with that.
  3. Anybody get the joke? Pssst is the nickname that Sam chose for his jersey, that time everybody was encouraged to do it. I don't know the story behind it.
  4. Is this one of those joke gloves found in novelty shops, or is he allowed to use one this large in a game?
  5. Davis is EXACTLY the kind of trade chip I hoped they would use. Not because he's a bad player, but he is duplicated too much by others in the system. I never like being the one to part with two young pitchers, but those are the coin of the realm. If they're the difference between making this trade, and not, then I think I'm fine with it. I leave it to the talent evaluators to determine which future Cy Young not to trade.
  6. I was premature with my "Welp" shrug of resignation, it turns out. Pssst. We got Sam Dyson from SF.
  7. Very unlikely the Reds GM would make a move that would be interpreted as a stab in the back by the Cleveland GM.
  8. How's his defense at SS, though? Last time I saw him in person he had several opportunities to shine and did not make the play on any. I hope he's in the lineup Friday night because I might be able to get to Pawtucket to watch the game. (Of course maybe he'll be a Giant or a Pirate by then. )
  9. "Welp." The above is the blog entry I have written and proof-read. It's all ready to go, come 4 pm EDT.
  10. Apparently you don't live in a house with a spouse who wants to crank up the air conditioning, while you want all the fresh air that comes from the windows being open. Or, vice versa.
  11. He can throw tantrums. That's a form of leverage. His reaction (resulting in a closed clubhouse) to being traded to the Mets instead of his beloved Yankees exemplifies why I didn't have huge interest in him, and might have played into why the Twins didn't go hard for him either; you look at the signings of guys like Cruz and Marwin and they seem to be good clubhouse guys. Whereas Stroman's had a certain reputation for a while now, even if the insiders don't speak openly. After that long-toss toward the outfield the other day, Bauer's another guy I don't expect to see in a Twins uniform for similar reasons, though clearly that's become a discussion more for the off-season than this deadline.
  12. In the post-season you can't laugh off a loss, after a 4-inning start, or an 18-inning nailbiter, and say "get 'em tomorrow" like you can in the regular season. There aren't enough tomorrows in the post-season. Boston had one of each of those two game types among their four World Series wins last season; losing one or both games opens the door for LA. You have to have the arms in the bullpen to go many innings that are of high quality, if need be. You don't bring a knife to a gun fight. We have a Rule-5 crunch looming anyway. And the year after that, too. It's a false economy to hang onto every mid-level prospect now. Go get 'em. Not tomorrow, but today.
  13. Moderator's note: Well, this escalated quickly. So I am asking all involved, please stop the bickering, and in particular please leave out the characterizations of GMs, or anyone, as "stupid", "fools", "idiots", et cetera. Using the qualifier "not" doesn't make matters better, since it leaves an obvious implication regarding those with a different opinion. It adds nothing to the discussion, invites disrespect in return, and is well past the line laid out by the Comment Policy.
  14. I don't care very much for the term "expendable". In the right deal, any player is expendable. It makes the term next to meaningless. Two related observations make Larnach or Kirilloff the ones to shop though. First, a team wants to deal from an area of strength or duplication, and we currently have more than sufficient coverage (now and for the future) at the corner outfield positions. Second, the team visibly shied away from taking pitchers with high draft choices. The rationale seemed to be that we avoid risk that way, in favor of position players more likely to develop into valuable major leaguers. Implicit in that strategy is to trade position players for pitching that is closer to major league ready, or even simply established major leaguers. If that strategy is sound (and I have had my doubts), now is the time to put it to the test. Kirilloff's not expendable. But he's one of the few conceivable chips to use if going after the top end pitching talent that we didn't think we could obtain reliably in the draft. There's no sense in waiting forever. The window of contention is open.
  15. Royce Lewis has an OPS of 1.000 at Pensacola. Why is he being left to die on the vine in AA at age twenty???1? Call him up!!!!1!
  16. Well, there was that one time. I still remember it well. As if it was yesterday. Or, maybe the day before. Memory is funny like that.
  17. Is that some of that new rap music the young kids are singing these days? I'm hip to it, daddio.
  18. Certainly not before this trade deadline - you wouldn't jerk a player around like that, telling him to pack for Pensacola and then to pack for some different AA city a few days later. Or, if you're cynical, you wouldn't pay the moving expenses, instead letting the next team do that. <eye roll>
  19. This pretty closely tracks how I'm viewing it, after a night's sleep. A week ago I was saying I don't mind an overpay, because 40-man adds are looming and it's a false economy to haggle too much. I just didn't expect to overpay for Sergio Romo. And, it's an overpay, tacitly acknowledged by both sides, due to the inclusion of "an arm" and the ever-popular PTBNL, in return for what looks like a good bat. Maybe I'm mis-under-estimating Vallimont, but the one scouting report I saw says his fastball sits in the low-90s, not mid-. A draftee from a small college, he's unlikely to have any significant impact in the majors. Which... can be said of nearly every pitcher drafted, but there are shades of likelihood. I'm going with "just an arm" until I see reason to change my mind about that. Maybe the coaches at Ft Myers or Cedar Rapids spotted something when he pitched against them that made them report, "he's just the kind of guy we could get an extra 3 MPH from". I doubt that Diaz would have been a key as part of a package to making a bigger trade, so I guess I have to wait until after the deadline to try to infer whether this was the right use of him as a trade chip. If another trade does happen, involving us giving up as "a sweetener" a player I prize more, I'd have to wonder. That's really the only reason I care. I want careful preservation of assets, I want aggressive use of those assets now - it's a fine line.
  20. Moderator's Note: Apparently some posters forgot that this is a moderated site. We've issued warning points to four members already and removed those posts (along with responses they garnered) - most weeks pass without even one. Please don't become the fifth today. If you like or dislike the trade, state why - nobody has been given a warning point for that. But don't tear into fellow posters, or post disrespectfully about players, or... well, you know what's expected here. Reminder, the site's Comment Policy is available for your review. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/8228-twins-daily-comment-policy/
  21. I got very tired of trading away one guy and getting two or more back, under the old front office. Today's trade harkens back to an era that said you can't forecast anything, so just get quantity and you'll come out ahead of the smarty-pants teams in the long run. Yes, we struck gold with Eduardo Escobar that way, but my memory is that most of those trades turned out exactly as you would imagine - no impact and within a couple of years all the pieces so-acquired had scattered to the four winds. Maybe that trading record is a topic worth someone's time as a careful study Given Diaz's imminent need for 40-man protection, he is of value to only a few teams, so I guess Miami had us over a barrel. But I still long for a time when we're the ones packaging someone like Diaz with a couple of other pieces that don't really fit, to get someone of enviable value in return. Meanwhile, Romo probably is better than the relievers we've recently DFA. But he hasn't been anything close to lights-out in years. A minor piece, someone no other team will envy, that should have cost less than Diaz.
  22. I took the liberty of moving the two posts over there. Hope that helps.
