  1. I'm not sure who you think is saying the starting pitching either is remotely acceptable, or is unimportant. The Twins are 9th in the AL in run scoring, and closer to the 12th spot than to the 8th. The offense is hardly hopeless and can get better on its own, but at the moment it's not a pennant winning collection. "Decent" starting pitching would have to be well above league average, just to reach .500 with this offense.
  2. Thanks for the explanation, PP.
  3. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/power-rankings--reds-climb--mets-tumble--yankees--ndash--ichiro--anyway--ndash--take-a-bow.html Among the ranking of MLB teams comes this gem: 28. Minnesota Twins (40-58; Previous: 25) – After awful start in Chicago, Twins find buyers somewhat leery, ya know? Took me a moment to realize the wordplay. Groan or enjoy, your call.
  4. Pavano, who is out with weakness in his right rotator cuff, is headed to Fort Myers, Fla., for the next phase of his rehab. Did they check his left one too? The weakness might be bilateral.
  5. I guess I'm a dimbulb: could you let me in on the joke? I keep seeing Terry Ryan referred to as JR. His initials are TWR; he's not a "junior" to father of the same name; he doesn't resemble J.R. Ewing as far as I can see. Please help.
  6. There's an understatement. If Ryan can pull that off, say combining Span with a throw-in, he has my further respect.
  7. Reported in other threads, but I thought it worth bringing up in its own right. Ichiro is with the Yankees now. If the Yankees had an interest in Span, it would seem gone now. I believe the "asking a ton" for Span quote was in the context of a Yankees source, so this all adds up.
  8. My take on the original quote was that some peer of Ryan's at a different club is saying he's asking too much. Major league center fielders don't grow on trees and Ryan shouldn't give one away; but an average CF is not going to bring two stud prospects in return. That's what I'm inferring is going on here, that Ryan seems to prefer to stand pat if he is offered only one prospect that is likely to top out at major league average in return. But maybe that is only one GM, and some other one will play ball with Ryan and overpay.
  9. The main reason I won't make a call is I don't know what kind of packages are being offered, nor what my scouts say about the players involved. Nor do I have a clear idea of what kind of money it would take to sign him to an extension. I'm in the camp of not trading him just for the sake of trading him; but if the offer is substantial, I'd be listening. And I'm very leery of a contract that could be untradeable if he reverts to recent form, a situation that would make Blackburn's look like a wise contract by comparison.
  10. That is either a very large cap or a very small boat.
  11. I am worried that McCarthy is a figment of the Oakland stadium. Saunders on the other hand is badly hurt by his current home park. You might get equivalent production out of either pitcher in the same park, and I agree Saunders might be the cheaper one to sign.
  12. You raise a good counterpoint. A lot depends on the individual player - a move to the west coast might affect Willingham more (or less) than some other player - so a lot depends on the GM's assessment of the total picture. It could indeed be the case that Willingham would have been just as happy with the Dodgers had they offered the same price, so that the Twins end up facilitating his getting onto the right team at the right price, if the trade happens. I think a large aspect of the assessment has to be the human factor. Players don't come to as team as a free agent just to be a chip to be bargained away later, even though everyone understands that "it's a business". I trust Terry Ryan's instincts in this regard a lot better than I trusted Bill Smith's. I will still be surprised if Willingham gets traded in his first year with the Twins.
  13. Reading your post, I caught a whiff of stale tutti-frutti gum. I know gum doesn't come with card packs anymore. Just strange how the memory works.
  14. Weighing against a trade is this long-term issue: will shipping Willingham so soon after signing a 3-year deal make future free agents think twice about signing? FA isn't usually a big part of the Twins' "game", but this off-season in particular we think they should be in the market for some pitching. Sure, if some teams knocks you over with a deal for JWill you have to listen, but for more equal deals, maybe you have to play the long game.

  16. I see you are from Minnesota, go to Wrigley Field some day. A long day's drive of 400 miles, for either of us. If your knowledge of geography is half as good as your knowledge of baseball, then you still know nothing about either one. Supposing you've talked to someone before the game, they're likely going to just go along with your strong-held assumptions rather than argue with some stranger.
  17. Anybody here buy a single word of this sentence?
  18. To me, Arcia is projecting like an elite hitter by the time he's 25, as he's holding his own in his short time so far at AA at age 21. The walks will come - Span wasn't walking much when he was at the same stage either. I don't have the L/R splits to go by but I have to believe he can overcome a deficiency if one is there - wishful thinking on my part, so I'm saying I'd go with my coaches and scouts on whatever they say about that. I know you're talking about which minor leaguer to package up, but the comparison I did to Span just confirms to me that Span is the one to trade for a AA pitcher with potential, if you're willing to trade Arcia for that. Cover Span's absence with stopgaps like Revere or even Mastro until Hicks/Arcia are ready, in 2014, say. Span's a table-setter, as are Revere and Mastro, and too many of those put your roster out of whack. In the long run, I think we'll look back at Span as a capable but very average CFer.
  19. At the SABR meeting in late June he was asked that, and responded more tersely than for any other question, approximate this way: "my wife hasn't decided. Next question."
  20. Amusing mis-type there. That of course should be Straker, as Steckel was the gung-ho (and then some) Vikings coach of 1984.
