  1. Oh, if a spare tire was any indication of ability to handle criticism, I could run for office.
  2. Fair enough. Minor miracle, then. They do happen.
  3. Nick and others took "what would it take" as what particular things must go right. My reaction was to look at the big picture. Three teams are above .500 in the division; even if we agree the Sox must fall off their current pace, it's reasonable to expect some team other than the Twins will finish above .500. Say it will take 87 wins to claim the division crown. The Twins need to go 51-26 from here on out to achieve that. A .662 clip, Nick mentioned this but didn't take the next step: it means a pace that would be a 107-win team if carried a full season. It's disallowed to say "can't happen". But this is what would have to happen: an historically-good 107-win team emerging from the present situation. Even with all the good things listed so far, starters going 6 innings and so forth, I am not sure I see a 100+ win team adding up from it. So, what would it take? More than we've collectively said so far, except for radioactive spiders. Is it disallowed to say "a miracle"?
  4. Grow a thick hide. Like I have not.
  5. Sounds to me like it's a difference of how one weights ceiling versus floor, with current results mixed in to taste. Buxton could still be an absolute bust, while Hicks may or may not make it to the majors but is showing an ability to master a certain level.
  6. Thank you for speaking up.
  7. Sign me up for Deal #1 too. Second choice is to keep Frankie.
  8. I have been completely discounting Gibson from making a contribution before two years post-surgery, if ever. So progress like this is really a welcome bit of news, which I will try to continue discounting for a while yet.
  9. Big-city snobs. See? Two can play at this game.
  10. Mastro was drafted as a 2B coming out of college and after a season in the low-A league the Blue Jays moved him off of there and into the outfield. When then Twins obtained him there seemed to be a philosophy to let him try 2B again, as perhaps his best chance to get to the majors, but it was less than a full success, and up with the big club he's wound up playing only in the OF. It's not the craziest idea to try it in the second half of a lost season, but the track record is that his most recent AAA coaches didn't consider him ready for prime time there, and his previous team had apparently decided he could not succeed there.
  11. > ask youself: where this team would be with another $18.5M worth of starting pitching? Why would we want 6 more Jason Marquises?
  12. Turn the question around. It's not easy to find a close comp for Liriano, but would you give up, say, B.J. Hermsen and Aaron Hicks (New Britain doesn't have a really promising middle infielder) to get, say, Luke Hochevar? If instead you would try to offer Florimon and Albers to get a Hochevar-type, I'm afraid that's the caliber we'd see for Liriano. I hope I'm wrong and Terry Ryan can work some magic on the phones, but I can't see a team offering two good prospects for Liriano.
  13. We're grilling burgers tonight. Can I have one of the onions from your belt?
  14. I have been in favor of trading Capps, because he's a tradeable commodity, not because I want Perkins closing.
  15. Either way, the choice of Fien to relieve DeVries seems more about getting the guy into a game, any game, moreso than trying to enter the All-Star Break on a winning note.
  16. Having Fien pitch the 8th doesn't seem to go with that theory.
  17. Maybe glunn will speak up, but if you re-read the longest paragraph it looks like "per year" was a typo (brain cramp) as the rest of the analysis was for a 3 year contract.
  18. Thanks for the headsup. jk
  19. You overlook his legendary sleight-of-hand pitch.
  20. He certainly seemed willing. And able.
  21. Aaaaand... Karl Wallenda remains on the tightrope after a serious wobble. Well done.
  22. Nice clutch strikeout of Kinsler. Now to face Andrus - can't walk him to load the bases for Hamilton, so this will be a great test.
  23. A better pitcher too, just going by the record.
