  1. Take out the respective worst 6-week stretches and there's still a gap? So then, worst stretch against worst stretch, or remainder against remainder, and they still lag, either portion. Not good, in other words.
  2. Unless you throw out those other teams' worst month and a half too.
  3. Thome hit .300 a few times whereas the Killer topped out at .288. Even accounting for a higher league average, Thome topped that average by more points than Killebrew did, when he hit .314. Apart from that, hitting .300 is special to many, and it could be that Thome has that in mind when he talks about it. It is a line in the sand you can refer to if you want to say "I wasn't just a basher up there, y'know."
  4. I wondered that too, but it's possible they've already done this, and the conclusion was that it was trauma-related and not really correctable except to give it more time. The guy is probably sick to death of "one more test" by now.
  5. If I hadn't already traveled to the Twin Cities for SABR, this would be worth the trip.
  6. The transactions of the last few days boil down to Blackburn being replaced by Deduno, and Parmelee being replaced by... Fien? So, we're back to a roster of 13 pitchers and 3 catchers. Very little scope for pinch-hitting and pinch-running. I guess this has been hashed to death, but it still seems weird to me. Wasn't so long ago that 11 pitchers were enough for a staff. And I think it detracts from the enjoyment of the tactical game - instead of managers having to anticipate opposing moves and countering them, it's just a matter of running wave after wave of fresh arms out there to throw heat for an inning.

  9. A few good innings and he wouldn't be in this predicament.
  10. Any stats to back that up? Presumably they would be for bases taken when the next guys are hitting; because, at the moment, Ben has a grand total of 6 doubles and 2 triples for the season, for the extra bases gained all on his own. Given all his speed, you'd expect a much greater level of legged-out doubles, and maybe an inside-the-park HR by now, so it's pretty clear that nearly all his hits are of the punch-and-judy variety, and thus don't give his speed much chance to shine. This thread started with a look at Revere's arm versus range, and has now broadened to his total game. With an OPS of only .725, it's still a pretty ordinary production level for RF. Adequate yes, and I didn't expect even this much from him, so I'm cheerfully ready to admit I was wrong to peg him as 4th OF for this season, and he's young so we can hope for more and more improvement. But it's a little soon to anoint him as an asset versus his league competition yet, in a lineup with too many table setters and not enough all-around hitters. I still haven't seen any stats mentioned that show bases taken against right fielders. Is it really the case that league-wide Revere is not showing up as markedly worse at this than other players?
  11. Isn't compensation now granted only when the qualifying offer is quite high, an average of top players or something, in the range of $11M per year?
  12. Your analysis looks sound, and happens to coincide with my snap judgement which is, "no effin' way with this guy."
  13. Not really my intention to open a Plouffe=SS discussion. Gardy's the only one with a vote, in that regard, and that was my point regarding Valencia coming back up.
  14. Wasn't your writing that was being zinged there. Oh, and on-topic: Adam Sandler movies.
  15. > What do you expect from Duensing tonight as he makes his third start? Big game for Delmon against his former team?
  16. I'm trying to figure out how Valencia would help the middle infield situation; he has essentially no professional experience at 2B/SS. Gardy is unlikely to move Plouffe to SS for two reasons: 1) he hated Plouffe's SS play when he was tried there; 2) he likes to give players clear roles and now that Plouffe is hitting a ton he really won't want to upset that bit of status quo.
  17. Too bad. Crushes my fantasy of some team claiming him off waivers and we're rid of the contract.
  18. I want variety, from game to game. A pitcher's duel is good for me only in the context that the offenses are actually capable and would be hitting them out if the pitchers were serving up meatballs. A slugfest is fun when you know that these are capable pitchers and the offense is just having one of those days. A 4-4 game in the seventh is all the more tense if you feel it could swing either way in the final innings - might end up 5-4 in extra innings, might end up 11-5 just as easily. 9-2 is all right once in a while, as long as you're not on the wrong end of it too often.
  19. Let's see: 8 position players, one more for the DH, catching's tough so you need a backup, plus one more position player in case someone gets hurt. Three starting pitchers for the rotation, plus a couple of rookie/graybeards to come in if the starter gets tired or pulls something. Sounds like a 16-man roster should be enough.
  20. The above scouting report is in line with what I guessed from his stats, that the Twins picked him for raw potential, since he has not been a full-time pitcher until this year and might benefit more than most from pro coaching, and that his timeline will be a lengthy one if he's ever to make it to the majors. I'll suggest an over-under of the 2018 season, which would be his age-26 season and would represent skipping no levels. Of course, the "over" includes never making it to the majors at all, which is the fate of most 12th rounders, so I am explicitly not taking bets at this time.
  21. McDonald was acquired via a deadline trade of Octavio Dotel. Maybe Capps can fetch us something similar. In other news: after that inning Revere is in a 5-29 slump. Would be nice if he can break loose today. This just in: Andrew McCutchen is good.
  22. Alexander (Alex) Muren is my adopt-a-prospect. He was born November 6, 1991, in Ramona, California (San Diego County). The righthander is listed as 6'3" and weighs 195. He was drafted in the 12th round of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft, following his junior year at Cal State Northridge. He signed quickly, June 18. His college page holds a wealth of detail that I mainly won't repeat here. In his 2012 college season had a 5-8 W-L record in 14 games (all starts), a 5.30 ERA, and 47 Ks in 91.2 innings. In 2011 he went 2-1 in 13 games (5 starts), 4.69 ERA, 22 Ks in 40.1 innings. It doesn't look like he played in varsity games his freshman year. He played some outfield in addition to pitching, and while in high school he was also an excellent football player (QB and kicking). LEN3's scouting report places his fastball in the 90-94 MPH range. Despite his college experience he was placed in the Gulf Coast League. At this writing, he has not yet appeared in a game for the GCL Twins.
  23. Put me down for Alex Muren. I'll be on vacation until early July so if you want a page for him sooner than that, maybe I should just pass.
