  1. I will be interested in learning Gardenhire's spin on the coaching changes as they emerge. At some point, a manager says "hey, these are MY guys". I guess Gardy isn't going to go to the mat for them.
  2. I've left this thread alone after Darin's callup, but congratulations to him on a nice rookie season in the big leagues. His .252 BA and .678 OPS probably don't fully reflect his contribution as an able fill-in for the outfield. Nice pickup by Terry Ryan and the scouting staff, as well.
  3. Came here for this, leaving satisfied.
  4. Not quite. Boras is Manship's agent I would enjoy seeing the Powerpoint presentation on Manship.
  5. With all the complaints about the groundouts to second, I wasn't too surprised to hear that he was pulling the ball more.
  6. Then we're back to the point of my first response, which is that the original rotation getting only XX starts is not really the core of the problem; that just hands Gardy and Ryan an excuse. "How could we win, when our rotation got only XX starts?" The starting pitching has to be fixed, and (as George Orwell's buddy just said) nothing else matters much until that happens. Necessary, yet not sufficient.
  7. For those who disregard BA, Williams' triple slash was .406/.553/.735 for an OPS of 1.287 and an OPS+ of 235. He led the league in homers with 37. He came in fourth in RBI with 120 (DiMaggio led the league with 125) though he had only 456 official at bats due mainly to being walked 147 times. Oh yeah, he struck out 27 times. Maybe he could have taken the lead in RBI if he hadn't choked with all those strikeouts.
  8. Below average starting, below average offense, middling defense and bullpen? Yeah, 75 wins sounds about right. I'm not sure where that insight really brings us, however.
  9. They'll announce Drew Butera is being considered for a rotation spot after his successful year as a reliever, and are looking to sign Francisco Liriano as a free-agent catcher for him.
  10. Glad you enjoyed it. I dashed it off quickly and it could've benefitted from major editing and improvement - the takeoff on Funeral For A Friend came off as creepy - sorry, it was meant to reflect the toughness any catcher requires.
  11. And yet, with the exception of a healthy Baker, I'm not sure how much closer to contention the team could have been with 162 starts by this quintet. You can't roll back the calendar with Pavano, Liriano and Marquis weren't that much different for their new teams, and there was always the option to let Blackburn start 32 times but why would you. If the goal is getting back to .500 then I suppose the focus can be solely on the starting staff. But if contending (or better) is the aim, you can't really ignore the offense, which was overall not even quite average: 700 runs scored in a league that averages 716 (going into tonight's final game), and OPS+ at 99 so that you can't really blame timely hitting despite comments like that from Gardy. Too many black holes and hustling table-setters in the lineup, to really excel.
  12. You want to know how disengaged I've been this past month of the Twins season? I saw the above lineup, and wondered about Willingham. Upon finding out about his shoulder, I also learned about Mastroianni's broken finger. I've just been checking the daily boxscore, monitoring a few of the batting averages and seeing which pitchers did what, and that's it. Ugh, what a lost season. PS. With Willingham listed day-to-day, yet not playing, I will go out on a limb and guess that Terry Ryan doesn't intend to trade him in the off-season, otherwise he'd have showcased that the injury isn't more serious. Fine by me, but less to talk about during hot-stove time.
  13. > I need to make better decision on how to spend the dollars. We can't have a lot of money tied up in players at Triple-A like Nishioka and Blackburn. I generally like Terry Ryan but I found this disappointing. In one breath, he seems about to take the heat for the signing of Marquis. In the next breath, he's passing the buck to his predecessor. "I need to make better decision on how to spend the dollars... THAN BILL SMITH DID."
  14. Please attribute properly. This was lifted from Tommy John's album, "Goodbye Justin Morneau," which contained the following tracks: "Funeral for a Catcher/Joe Lies Bleeding" "Nishi in the Wind" "D-d-d-dickey and the Mets" "Goodbye Justin Morneau" "Joe Mauer Has No Title (Just Second in BA)" "The Ballad of Erik Komatsu" "All the Young Girls Love Darin" "Butera Can't Hit (But He Can Rock 'n' Roll)" "Saturday Night's Alright for Losing"
  15. You know, sometimes a manager will go to bat for his coaches. "You can fire them, but then you'll have to fire me." Not Gardy this time - "eh, someone's gonna get the ax from top management, I hear." If Gardy actually was OK with a firing, it should be him doing the firing, shouldn't it?
  16. Bruno's qualification is that He Is Fun. As evidence, I offer the anecdote I wrote for my Mastroianni adopt-a-prospect: http://www.twinsdaily.com/showthread.php?963-Darin-Mastroianni
  17. I respect Nishi's walking away from guaranteed money. I wonder though if the Players' Union put any pressure on him to stick to the contract, or will put up a fuss now. In fairness to the players, it should be noted that both sides sign the contract, and precedents like this one can put pressure on some future player to give back something due to nagging injuries or whatnot. I have mixed feelings on the issue, but just wonder about it.
  18. The Dreaded Vote of Confidence, one level down the management chain?
  19. One of my frustrations, the few times I've gotten to speak with players or ex-players, is how un-introspective they seem to be. I once thought a good question for a panel of ex-ballplayers (average players, not stars) would be "what was the opponents' book against you?" - the two times I ever tried that question, both times I got "don't walk him, heh heh heh". Funny answer, not very illuminating. Perkins sounds like someone I would like chatting with.
  20. It'll be a nice problem to have, if and when the day comes, and probably the answers to those questions will sort themselves out on their own; if it's a difficult decision the ones not making the cut can be traded for younger prospects. I don't see a lot of purpose trying to guess now, though IMO you have room for just one table-setter in that scenario and power matters for everyone else.
  21. When your team name is the "Snappers" nobody's prospects wants to play for you.
  22. If you had a roster full of him, you'd be spending only $50M. Of course you wouldn't want a roster like that. (You need Drew Butera to pitch.) But he's not exactly breaking the bank versus paying some AAA guy at minimum. So yes, I agree he's been a good signing.
  23. Thorough, well thought, deeply intriguing, and underlined argument. Nice work. https://www.google.com/search?q=Absolutely+nothing.+Say+it+again%2C+y%27all. In case that was needed.
  24. POTD nominee I was going to post something similar then remembered the part about being banninated for slamming others on this board. Otherwise I would have won your coveted award.
  25. WAR, What is it good for? Absolutely nothing. Say it again, y'all.
