  1. Depends on what you think a team HOF should be. If it's just a regular HOF plus a couple of guys you want to gripe about not getting into the regular HOF, that's one approach. Most times, it's a good deal more inclusive, and I'm fine with that. To me, an HOF should be approximately "guys who were in the discussion for who are the best few, for a considerable portion of their careers". For the regular HOF that means in baseball as a whole; for a team HOF it means guys who were arguably the best player on that team for a while. Then among those candidates, vote for who you liked best or whatever.
  2. I think you've put your finger on what is exactly at issue.
  3. Is that the one where Gaetti said afterward in self-reproach, "it's pretty tough to play this game with both hands wrapped around your throat"? Or the one where Ron Davis cried?
  4. Then I guess the idea is to wait and see, after bringing Correia home right at closing time, what quality of sammich he makes me the next day, before passing judgement.
  5. Sweet, merciful crap. You'd have to at least imagine the possibility that the league would've intervened. That, or the Colorado National Guard. I prefer the 1968 Dodgers link. Voila! Blackburn = instant Claude Osteen. (Give or take.)
  6. It doesn't disqualify him, any moreso than being young disqualifies someone, but the usual age for a first managing gig is younger than Glynn is and I am not seeing what makes him the guy who should buck the trend. The upside of going with someone similar but 10 years younger is that if you happen to really click with your pick, you've potentially got him for a couple of decades.
  7. I'm logged in, and using Firefox. If I click on Twins Daily - Kevin Correia And The Twins Face Obstacles I get 1 comment (Seth's). Same if I use IE. Same if I clear the cache. To follow up: this morning I clicked on the above link, and I see 101 comments. No idea what changed - nothing changed at my end, I'm sure. And another followup: the problem is now occurring for me in Parker's "All The Way May" article. Clicking on it claims to have only 1 comment, whereas I entered a second comment which I saw show up before I closed the window earlier. Interestingly, if I use the Search tool on the word "Trevor", this thread shows up twice, one claiming 6 comments and one claiming 0. If I click on the one showing 0, I do indeed see a version of the article with 0 comments; if I click on the one claiming 6, I'm back to seeing a version with only 1. I tried to include a screen shot but the reply system said that was too many bytes.
  8. Why is an ERA+ of 99 over the past four seasons (note that I'm anti-cherry picking by excluding his career year of 2008) crappy? Being league-average is hard to do against very talented competition, and is quite far above replacement level. Joe's no ace, but he can contribute to a winning ballclub, and can help stabilize this one.
  9. > May has been able to get batters “out” by throwing three “strikes”. On his way to these “strike outs”, This is an interesting and different way of looking at pitching, indeed at the game itself. You may be onto something here.
  10. I see in MLB Trade Rumors that Philly is looking for a fifth starter now that they traded away Worley. Looking for low risk, high upside. Any way we can pump up Nick Blackburn's reputation and get a prospect or two for him? This guy can be an absolute all-star with a change of scenery. Right? Right?
  11. I think the brain trust sees 2015 as the first season they'll really contend, but if 2014 is the "turn the corner" season then in your scenario it still makes sense for this to be when to bring in the new guy.
  12. Glynn seems kind of old to be getting his first major league managing job. I also don't see what's in his resume that someone hiring would find so fascinating. Not saying he'd be bad, just that there's probably 100 other guys just like him and a bit younger so if he succeeds he'll be around a good long while.
  13. > This is all dependent on him being realistic and realizing he is not going to make top closer money though Someone will pay the man. And I don't see Terry Ryan shelling out for a reliever when he's still trying to patch the starting rotation.

  16. Denard Span was NOT traded to free up money I didn't say he was. At the time of the trade, it was observed that a side effect is that some fewer dollars were now committed, and could be used to get an even spiffier FA starting pitcher than might otherwise be signed. Now, it just happens that the money previously earmarked for Span is almost exactly matched by what will go to Correia. As we heard repeatedly during the recent election, it's just arithmetic - on a team with a finite and not very elastic budget, signing decisions have consequences.
  17. This is key. If he gets someone good, then had this signing occurred later we'd be nodding in agreement about solidifying the staff or whatnot. But... until that other signing occurs, I'm cautiously pessimistic that this is as good as it gets, and that a slightly more expensive option like Saunders woulda coulda shoulda been better.
  18. The discussion about his defense, which I think can be major-league average, doesn't touch on why Maestro would be a depressing concept as a starting CF.
  19. Denard Span is set to earn $11.25M the next two years - Washington pays that now. We were hoping this money would be applied to improving the starting pitching. Well, $10M has now been applied to Correia. If the payroll is a limiting factor, it's because of decisions made like this one.
  20. Does the visiting team still get a percentage of the gate? I usually try to make it down to Oakland when the Twins visit, and I don't expect my policy would change just because of a rebuilding pattern. OTOH, it's just a couple of tickets, depending on who comes with me. If the Twins get 10% of my sixty bucks, that's what, enough to pay for a third year of Correia, right?
  21. I agree with the reservations about using WAR, and also that it is fun to do. I come at it slightly differently, and with focus on free-agent signings: to challenge for a World Series title, you should aim for 50 WAR. If you have a $100M budget more or less, that would be $2M per win. However, the way the Collective Bargaining Agreement works, a lot of your talent can be at near-minimum if you manage things right and have a bit of luck. A team like the Twins can have 10-15 players making minimum or almost - call that $10M in aggregate for 15 players, who can contribute half of your WAR if your youngsters are good. That leaves $90M for 10 players at market prices who will contribute the other 25 WAR, or just under $4M per win. This puts a clear focus on what a "team-friendly" contract like for Span and Willingham gives you, and even puts Mauer's huge contract in a much more positive light if he really can contribute 5+ WAR. It also explains why good-but-not-great pitchers who might give you 3.0 WAR are getting above $10M per year.
  22. Me too, and this is why 99% of the comments (including mine) are just jabber.
  23. That one goes into my quotes file. Thanks.
  24. This is the pipe dream people continue to cling to, that 2014 means anything. It's been clear for several weeks now that 2015 is the target date for serious contention. 2014 is when the team turns the corner, but should not be expected to really go places quite yet. 2013 is all about laying groundwork where it is possible, and otherwise riding it out with as presentable a team as possible. Two-year signings (and guys such as Willingham who will be with us in that period) will make sense in this last light, and have no bearing on the real story of 2015. I'm not thrilled with Correia, as I was hoping for somewhat better "hold the fort" signings, but ultimately the $10M spent will not hold the team back in either year.
  25. If the MLB trade rumors site is to be believed, Youkilis Seriously Considering Yankees: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com, Youk has a $12M offer in hand from the Yankees. Minnesota's paltry revenue stream from funding Target Field pales in comparison to what drives this market.
