  1. Reminds me of the time I went bar-hopping and came home with a perfect 10.
  2. The higher up in the organization, the more skills are needed. One reason I'm reluctant to see Terry Ryan go, even if I can name some faults, is that the GM position requires so many skills and our current guy doesn't have (IMO) a fatal flaw in any of them - the next person who sits in the chair will have a different collection of faults and it might not be clear that some of them are deal-breakers until too late. Being field manager is also complex, though IMO less so than the GM position, so I have similar concerns about trading Gardy's flaws for somebody else's. But at the coaching level, well, more than one attribute may be needed, but still the skills seem much less rare. Anderson may indeed still be a good coach, but if he is mistakenly fired his replacement is much less likely to flame out totally, than for the higher-up positions. It's thus less risky to simply go by results and say it's time to move on. I feel the same about any coaching position, if a pattern of failure is showing.
  3. Did he have breakfast this morning? I need to know.
  4. I don't think Anderson is necessarily a "bad" pitching coach. But his job is to find answers and not enough answers have been found the past several seasons. I like Ryan and am OK with Gardy, but I think pitching coach is a weak spot that needs to be addressed.
  5. There there, you there, there is no need to be so certain there.
  6. Hard to maintain, but obviously he's focusing on it so it's possible. Less than 50/50 IMO, but not 1% either.
  7. The rebuild IMO started in earnest the day they traded their cost-controlled starting center fielder. How a team bridges to a next generation that isn't close to being ready doesn't affect the rebuild. As to the topic, no thanks to Washington, no thanks to Towers.
  8. Fun with 19th century numbers involves remembering that the rules were constantly changing. In 1883 a walk required 8 balls, and in 1884 that number was reduced to 6. The league K/BB ratio was 2.57 and 2.38 respectively, so Whitney still stands out.
  9. Or, a new iteration of the Mod Squad or some location on Jump Street, trying a little too hard to blend in with the teener crowd.
  10. "Please, son, I don't want to hear about your junk. None of us does."
  11. "Shoot. Skip, I just noticed, I left my stuff at the hotel." Filing this one for future good use.
  12. Fixed. / snepp kind of beat me to the punch

  14. So, what's the Over-Under on meaningless runs in the bottom of the ninth? I'll suggest 0.5, and take the Over.
  15. The seasons were shorter, setting the bar at a different level, but in thirties and forties there were teams that entered each season for years on end without a ray of hope of contending. Phillies, Browns, ... the list goes on, it really was The Rich Get Richer back then. Connie Mack would tear his teams apart when players would get too expensive. (Sound familiar?) The 1935-1943 A's lost 90 every year, including some 100+ loss stinkers, for a streak of 9. They broke the streak by going 72-82 in 1944, then went back to their old ways with seasons of 98 and 105 losses. I won't dig further to confirm whether nobody else has exceeded this. But our current tale of woe pales in comparison to Ye Bad Olde Days.
  16. An important bulletin about this game: Pee-yew.
  17. I get the Pre-check notation at random times, and haven't been able to figure out a pattern. Reno isn't a hub and I fly too many different airlines, so that might be why the noise is drowning out the signal for me. I filled out whatever info the airlines have asked for, and haven't paid anything (don't think I was even offered the option), so I'm in some in-between level of blessedness.
  18. You know how we know that God is a baseball fan, right?
  19. Such a small sample size, and he's teased us with apparent progress at times, so I'll wait until next June to get very interested. But it's a good trend, no question.
  20. "You Must Be THIS TALL To Ride This Joke"
  21. A mime convention occurs to me as one....
  22. Casey Wilson is pitching? I'd pay to watch that.
  23. S'long Jared, your good outings were appreciated but it's time to part company.
  24. What is your view on Casey Fien (he of the two-run 8th inning to snatch away a win from Hughes)?
