  1. After a good play in one inning in a recent game, the next inning he had two that led our own Riverbrian to say something along the lines of "those were plays that make a manager lean over to one of the other coaches and say I can't play him there." I don't think it's really as extreme as that, but it might be a factor. Let him watch and learn from the bench and expose him defensively as gradually as possible.
  2. I suppose so. But honestly, it's a 162 game grind, and along about game 12 or so, waking up when the alarm clock tells you to is gut check time for our guys. Character is huge but most of the bad characters get weeded out by this level. Talent level time. That's what I want to see.

  4. Some people apologize when they mis-speak, or at least move on. Others turn it around.
  5. Perhaps, in a vacuum. And if they're DLing Milone, then the GM will bring *someone* up from AAA. But this isn't what I said. Given a 25-man roster, the manager chooses the starting pitcher. If TR informs him, "I'm bringing up Duffey for the Toronto series", Molitor can say "fine, I'm still starting May." Or he can, as he did, say "I'm starting Duffey". We shouldn't make this into a FO decision.
  6. His very first pitch today was not where he surely wanted it, and I said Uh Oh.
  7. If we're talking about the current decision to bring up a guy from AAA, I'm not sure it's mainly the front office. Surely it's Molitor's choice among the various options. He's clearly got his views about May. Or at least, if I were a MLB manager, and my team was where we are in the wild card race and about to face one of our main competitors for the spot, I would be livid to the point of tendering my resignation if I were told "no, you can't have the starter you want, who you temporarily stashed in the bullpen, to face Toronto, instead I'm bringing up this guy from AAA for you to use."
  8. I believe I checked in at 80, last time someone mounted a mid-season over-under when we were like 9 games over. Now the pendulum has swung the other way and even 80 feels high; but the baseball takes funny bounces so I'll stick with that. It's higher than I was guessing at the beginning of the year.
  9. I just re-read the subject line a different way, and realized that Tony Oliva is, hands down, the best-hitting coach in the system.

  11. "As hard as he can" and "whole" might be overstating it. But another way of saying my previous reply is that it sure looks like a Tell, which you picked up on.
  12. Dozier might see different pitches when runners are on base.
  13. He's on record multiple times that he prefers to wait for the phone to ring, rather than him make the first overture. The intended inference I think is that it gives him the upper hand in the negotiation. The unintended implication is along the lines you said.
  14. Oh, and I like this quote, but only for perverse reasons. It's typical of a person being interviewed to mangle a quote. The better version is, “Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.” I would not have expected Toby to necessarily get that one right.
  15. I would have enjoyed this if I had read it. / did I capture the Yogi spirit?
  16. I think O'Rourke warmed up fully in the 8th, probably making him unavailable at that point.
  17. Checked in and saw the box score, came here to mention something along those lines, see it's already on the record. Here's the link to the quote. http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2015/07/31/twinsights-twins-reportedly-acquire-rhp-kevin-jepsen/
  18. Usually I let typos go, as should we all, but this one was funny.
  19. The guy had as many as 479 plate appearances once in the minors. His second most was 286. And he's 31 so there have been a lot of seasons. So he doesn't seem like a guy who his managers were eager to get into the game as often as possible, even with the relatively small rosters that minor leagues run. It's hard to imagine he'd be a real upgrade over who we've got now. Maybe he's good defensively and would be valuable as a third catcher, on a team that... no, too late, Gardy's gone.
  20. Maybe.
  21. Excellent question, and I look forward to some knowledgeable counterpoints to the ones you made.
  22. An example being the bottom of the ninth with a one-run lead and a runner on third. That would be such a point.
