  1. So, Gibby, how many drinks into your evening's quota are you, at this point?
  2. Sam Mele is a few months older than my father. Sam sounded good in his lengthy video monologue. But my dad does look better.
  3. Alex has had some success in Chattanooga, but it hasn't been as smooth and effortless as in the lower levels of competition. In 9 games and 14 1/3 innings the ERA stands at 5.02 and the SO/9 is a paltry 4.4. But almost all the damage has come in his two most recent games - an inning each, 3 runs each. That'll put some lumps on a reliever's record in a hurry. Hopefully the coaches and he figure something out and turn it right around.
  4. ... proudly holding up a trophy minnow, even as the lake around him is teeming with walleye as far as the eye can see.
  5. Tyler's second half of July, spent in Cedar Rapids, was so-so at best. He batted .245, and didn't hit with a lot of authority (3 doubles only). He did take a free pass when it was offered, so that his on-base average was .365. Still, an aggregate .667 OPS isn't going to turn many heads. For the season, he's got his CR batting average back up .200. Let's leave it at that, and hope for the stellar August that I still think he's capable of.
  6. Vielma's July resulted in a batting average of .338. He walked a little and hit five doubles, so his OPS of .772 shows it wasn't an "empty 300". This brings his season numbers to .265 BA and .618 OPS. While these aren't stellar numbers, you like to see that trend being upward instead of down.
  7. It was a good month of July, up until the very end. Five starts, an ERA of 2.78 and 27 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings. But that masks a very rough 6-1 loss to the Clinton LumberKings on the 29th. Let's just give him a mulligan on that one, shall we? For the season his ERA stands at 2.49 and he's striking out 7.4 per nine.
  8. Does a four pitch walk work better for you instead?
  9. 1-0, middle of the first. The run scored on a ground out. Coulda been worse. CBU.
  10. Uff. Not a strong start to the first inning for Gibson.
  11. "Ticket To Ride" playing on mlb.tv. Must be '65 all right.
  12. So you're predicting a far-reaching ripple effect?
  13. +1, Crarko. You win the Internets.
  14. And hope the opposing team doesn't have a lefty hitter or two on the bench...
  15. One of the two words I was taking issue with, yes.
  16. Headline on the front sports page in this morning's Reno Gazette-Journal: "Cespedes to Mets, Jepsen dealt to Twins" Now who's looking like a big-time trader, hmmmm? Kudos, Terry Ryan. / OK, full disclosure: Jepsen went to high school in Reno, and the full headline was "Cespedes to Mets, Reno's Jepsen dealt to Twins". Gotta love small town newspapers.
  17. In addition to the comments already made, I think Ryan has enough ambivalence about advanced stats to find it difficult to pursue such a player if it's going to be his only one. It's not that he's not smart enough to know FIP, xFIP, BABIP, HR/FB and so forth. It's that he factors in, "how the heck am I going to sell this guy to the ticket-buying fan base? They're just going to see the 5.89." I give credit to Ryan that he'd pursue such a player if he thought it would be a difference maker, damn the PR. But rarely can you separate out such factors so neatly. The Cardinals are in a different place, for making a deal like that one.
  18. A comic-book supervillain’s arsenal of prospects. LOL. Nice one.
  19. Yes, my biggest concern for Sano is that if his bat goes quiet for a while, patience with his glove will stretch thinner than thin.
  20. Escobar is a starting shortstop only on a bad team, or is a valuable utility player on a good one. To me this move just indicates a resignation that holding onto the WC spot is a long-shot at best, maybe even a mirage. (An assessment I happen to hold, which obviously may be coloring my interpretation here.) Enjoy the games while they are still meaningful, and it's certainly not politically correct for the front office of field staff to write off the season completely while the standings still show hope. They are human beings on the field, young ones who are still growing in many cases, and good things may still happen. But be prepared to start looking ahead to '16 if and when they slip even a couple of games behind in the race.
  21. Because everyone is arguing in bad faith, that's why.
  22. Dick Groat.
  23. This is English, correct? Well then, fine. I must go do some research.
  24. They did indeed. And so the net result for me is that the acquisition of Kevin Jepsen solidifies our bullpen so much that... that... he replaces nobody. No pitcher is seen as instantly expendable as a result of him joining. We gave up Hu and Tapia for that. Groovy.
  25. I could do better next time by writing a better-thought-out post than my previous. Ya done good, SampleSize.
