  1. It may not be the year to go all-in at the deadline. I can appreciate that. I wonder though, if the Twins were running away with the division, would it then be OK to make a big trade? Or would a Royals-like record make us think that no improvement would be necessary? My point is that it seems like either the team isn't good enough yet to really push for a championship... or the team is so good that all the pieces are in place and we don't want to mess with the chemistry. Either way, we have an excuse to not play at the grown-up table.
  2. +1. Totally agree. One of my biggest criticisms of TR has been his reluctance to commit to a direction for this team. If he thought the team really had a chance this time, then he needed to get more help than Jepsen. If he thought this team was just an early season mirage, then adding a reliever accomplishes nothing. He could have made a blockbuster deal, or sold off some vets to stockpile for next year. I would have been satisfied with either approach. Instead he chose to sort of halfway ride the fence.
  3. Smith -"we'll give you Ramos for Capps." George Washington (or whoever their GM was) - "you mean proven closer Matt Capps? I dunno..."
  4. If the 2 hour time zone difference was a factor, then couldn't we expect east coast teams to do 33% worse than the Twins while in California? I do think there's something to the Twins clenching up when they see certain jerseys in the opposite dugout (see Yankees, New York). That factor is diluted over time with roster turnover on both sides, so going back decades for evidence isn't going to tell us much. Did they get too much rest over the All-Star break? It certainly doesn't look like the Athletics or Angels did. We're always looking for sneaky angles to explain losing (and winning) streaks. In this case, my opinion is that the Twins are playing woeful, smelly baseball right now and the big reason is that they're regressing towards the mean.
  5. Putting too much pressure on the kid batting him sixth. Molly should have him ninth.
  6. They haven't been able to pare the roster down to seven relievers, but they might send out a reliever to add an extra starter? I don't get it. I know that the next starter could come out of the bullpen in an emergency, but that would throw everybody else off schedule. This six-man rotation idea just sounds like an easy way out of making a decision. I would make a tough choice, rip the band-aid off, and hurt someone's sensitive feelings.
  7. Whatever they do, I don't want to see them go at it halfway. If TR thinks they have a shot, that's great. Go out and find a catcher and some bullpen help. If he doesn't think they have a shot, trade Pelfrey. Trade Suzuki as well if you can get anything potentially helpful.
  8. Oh, and in regards to dinosaur theme parks, life... a ha... hmmm finds a way.
  9. I know there was a lot made of Brunansky working with Mauer on pulling the ball in the air, but how do we know that he's not just doing the same thing he's had success with in games? I have noticed more swings early in the count, but in regards to hit trajectory, it looks all the same to me. Fly balls to left and grounders to second. Defenses haven't had to adjust the shift from what they were already doing.
  10. I have no sympathy for a hitter getting beat by shifts. Either beat the shift or put it over the fence, two things Mauer is unable to do. If it's the concussion, I have sympathy for him, but he needs to get much better real fast or he'll be replaced. Too bad, that's how it's been done forever.
  11. I'm not here to gloat that I totally called this... I'm just going to remind everyone that I like, TOTALLY called this.
  12. In general I'm not a fan of selecting relievers this high in the draft, even if the plan is to turn him into a starter.
  13. I think a trade is a better idea. Let's say the Twins had another starter at AAA beating the door down for a call-up along with Milone. Should they then consider a seven-man rotation? I think you shop Pelfrey and Milone around and take the best deal you can get.
  14. Just about every hitter has better stats with RISP than otherwise, for multiple reasons. Pitchers in the stretch and/or tired, defenses unable to shift... as well as RISP situations more commonly happening with at least one out, so runners are more apt to go early.
  15. It's come to a point where I believe that Joe Mauer is going to hold this team back- not just because of his salary, but because he's playing a position where the Twins will have better options than him, sooner rather than later. I get all the gushy hometown kid stuff... but a tough decision is going to need to be made. Either he is moved to a different position, or *gasp collectively* another team. Think about this-if Mauer was a free agent after 2015, how in demand would he be as a FA first baseman? What kind of contract would the Twins be willing to give him to stick around and provide less-than-premium offense at a non-premium defensive position? Bottom line- I believe Plouffe is a better player than Mauer right now, and given a choice between the two, I would pick Plouffe.
  16. It's good that he's pitching well, and I do believe Milone is currently one of the best five starters on the 25-man, but... What is it they say about Meyer? All the stuff in the world will put up impressive numbers at AAA, but major league hitters will feast on him because he doesn't have control. I think the inverse might be true for Milone. He's got the control to dominate at AAA, but he doesn't have the stuff to parlay that domination to the majors. I remember Kevin Slowey had eye-popping AAA numbers as well...
  17. I would like to see Plouffe get a contract to stick around and play third base a few more years. I'd love to have Sano's bat in the lineup, but I don't think he'll ever be as good defensively there as Plouffe is now. I think Sano is destined for first base anyway. Which means Mauer will have to play a corner outfield spot.
  18. If they call him up after rosters expand on Sept. 1, it would not burn an option. That said, I don't think the Twins should be all that concerned about Buxton's option since he'll very likely get an MLB contract before all his options are used up.
  19. I've never been a believer in Pelfrey, but I hope he continues pitching well. I also hope the Twins don't hesitate to trade him if the opportunity arises, because some space has got to be cleared out.
  20. These kinds of decisions make me think it was a mistake to put Mauer at first rather than the outfield. Sano would be a better fit at first than third.
  21. It comes from the assumption that Sano is a long term fit at third base, so if Plouffe is to stick around he will be forced off the position. Again, the Twins are far more likely to move Sano if they are both around. If they're both in the lineup, why put them in the worse defensive alignment? It would be like playing Rondell White in left field while Jason Tyner is the DH.
  22. My guess is Sano is moved off 3B and Plouffe is signed to a new contract to play there another three years or so.
  23. Actually I have seen him play a bit in person. His arm is good. I'm more concerned that he doesn't have the agility necessary to play an adequate third base.
  24. I don't believe that Plouffe will be forced out upon Sano's arrival. More likely, IMO, Plouffe will stick around at 3B and Sano will have a different position.
