  1. Arcia to DH, send down Santana and give SS to Escobar, call up Buxton now, Vargas to 1B and Mauer to LF.
  2. True, and admittedly I was going to add to my post "but then who bats leadoff," but it occurred to me that anyone else couldn't be worse there.
  3. I'd be fine with letting Santana knock the rust off defensively. He's got an excuse for that. I'm more concerned about the offense or lack thereof batting leadoff. I don't think it would be jumping the gun to move him to 9th.
  4. Re: the Hunter signing... I believe it was about 75% marketing and 25% of Terry Ryan's nostalgia and wistfulness... The same attitude that brought back Jason Bartlett to rally the troops from the bench... and that was convinced that Jason Kubel wasn't cooked. Remember when the team was good? Those guys were on the team, therefore bringing them back must make the team better. Ah, those were the days.
  5. Any decent defensive RF could have caught that ball. It did look to me like he took a bad route.
  6. I hope the cavalry is coming over the hill soon. This group looks like it can easily top 100 losses this year, especially if they keep getting pwned by the division rivals.
  7. Whenever this test was, presumably it was the most recent test. It's possible that Santana was using previous to then, but he's been around a while and I'm sure this is not the first PED test he was required to take. As for voiding his contract, that's just not how things work right now. I bet the Yanquis would have been all over voiding A-Rod's contract if that was ever an option. I'm disappointed that Santana is suspended and doubly disappointed that Pelfrey is back to the rotation. I've seen plenty of him. TR said that he went with Pelf because Pelf outpitched May in spring training, which is true, but it's also true that Pelf outpitched Milone, who got the open spot. My interest in this team just took a nosedive. I really want to get excited, but they're not giving us much to be excited about.
  8. .250/.285/.370... the BA will go down and the lack of walks will continue.
  9. .250/.310/.315. He'll be OK, but the Twins need a long-term answer at catcher and it isn't Zuke.
  10. The Twins approach to team building reminds me of how the Royals used to do things. They hype all of their big prospects that are on the cusp, but then bring in a bunch of middling, stopgap veterans like Jose Guillen, Gil Meche, Miguel Olivo, and Bruce Chen. Maybe the prospects aren't ready, but I believe that players can't be ruined forever by an early call up. Even established players struggle at times. If a slump can kill your confidence, then you probably weren't going to be a good player anyway.
  11. The thought had occurred to me, but the question that raises is how a Sano promotion would open up playing time at first with Mauer entrenched there.
  12. For whatever amount of time off they're planning to give Mauer (which shouldn't be much), evidently they feel Vargas isn't adequate to be the #2 first baseman. I think it's a much better idea to give Plouffe some reps in the outfield.
  13. Plouffe working at first base makes me think that Vargas will not come north.
  14. This could be part of why lineup construction has very little correlation with scoring runs. 1. Your leadoff hitter is only guaranteed to lead off once per game. 2. If he hits a home run, your 2, 3, and 4 hitters are less likely to hit into a double play. 3. If he hits a home run, you've already got one on the board when your "big knockers" come up- a bird in the hand vs. two in the bush. 4. He gets more at-bats than anyone.
  15. I would think having your lead-off guy jacking solo shots would be a good thing. It's the best possible outcome for any at-bat.
  16. I would guess if Milone was considered as good as his shiny A's ERA would suggest, then Beane could have gotten more for him than Fuld, and other teams would have been willing to trade better outfielders to get him.
  17. You could say all the same things about Pelfrey, and we've heard before about what a great clubhouse guy Pelf is. I think the job is Pelf's to lose.
  18. I would guess that any team (with the exception of the Padres) that had even tepid intetest in Stauffer would have told him, "sure, we'll see what you can do as a starter in spring training."
  19. The specialization of bullpens combined with the starter's pitch count means more pitching changes than ever. And every time, the manager jogs out to the mound, taps his arm, gives the outgoing pitcher a pep talk and pats him on the behind, then holds an inexplicable pow-wow with the infielders while the reliever jogs in. Then the reliever throws a few warm-up tosses before play begins again.
  20. In that case, you're not the type of fan that MLB is most concerned about. You'll probably watch regardless of how long the game goes. This matter is more about new fans... kids who get bored watching a baseball game, or parents who decide not to take their kids to a weekday evening game because it very well might go past 11:00 p.m. and the kids need to be up for school in the morning.
  21. MLB needs to do away with the manager's challenge. It's not the replay process so much as the manager's stroll out on to the field to stall for time while the dugout reviews the video. Put in place an extra "video" umpire who signals the field crew that a play should be reviewed and take the managers out of the equation. Also on the subject of managers strolling out to the field, is it really necessary to do so for every pitching change?
  22. I suspect that Meyer won't debut until June. That leaves May, Milone, and Pelf. Like I've said before, if all three of those guys are bad in ST, Pelf will be their choice.
  23. I don't disagree with what you're saying... I just think that if all three of May, Milone, and Pelfrey are bad in ST, they'll give the ball to Pelfrey first because they have less invested in Milone and they have plenty of time to get May on track. I still think Meyer is AAA bound for a couple months regardless.
  24. I think the Twins want Pelfrey to pitch well more than they want Milone or May to pitch well. That's why they'll give him every opportunity, maybe to drum up a bit of trade interest or to justify his contract, or both.
