  1. Blackburn was modestly good from 08 to 09, but that sure seems like a long time ago. I'm not optimistic he's going to ever regain that form. Carlos Silva was pretty good for the Twins for a couple years, too...
  2. Michael Cuddyer, but with more power and more defensive value. That is to say, I think Plouffe will put up a better BA and OBP than many are giving him credit for.
  3. The Twins aren't stacked in middle infielders in the minor leagues, so it's not like Nishioka is blocking anyone. But he's sunk cost right now. The best the Twins can hope for is to trade him back to a Japanese team for some cash.
  4. Ouch! That sounds very painful, but not terribly serious. I hope he's back soon.
  5. The side that traded away a good but not great reliever with a multi-million dollar contract for a young, starting-caliber position player with several years of serfdom left. If the Twins could trade Capps at the deadline for a prospect as good as Ramos, I'd be very pleased.
  6. You mean Mauer, right? This is no slam on Mauer, but the other guys on that list - who played under the different circumstances you outlined - caught more often than Mauer. And the rigors of catching is one aspect of baseball that has remained fairly constant - except for the improved body armor that Mauer is lucky enough to have access to.
  7. Nationals trade Matt Capps for Wilson Ramos.
  8. The Twins don't have a lot of outfield depth. The difference between Span and Revere is not insignificant, but if you can improve your rotation enough to compensate for that difference plus some, I'd absolutely trade Span. It would have to be the right pitcher, though. A young guy with credentials that will be under team control for a few years.
  9. It's actually Mansihp. He and Adam Everett play for the Minnestoa Twins.
  10. Scott Diamond.
  11. I agree with people in the organization.
  12. Should Dozier work on some things at AAA? Probably. I don't see who you call up to replace him though. The other potential left-side infielders on the 40-man are Nishioka and Valencia, who've both been awful at AAA. The only infielder warranting a call up is Parmelee, and calling him up would limit defensive options.
  13. I don't remember hearing that Revere didn't play LF well. He can't be worse over there than RF. Pretty sure the real reason that Willingham moved to LF was because the Twins wanted Morneau to DH, which meant Doumit had to play a position other than C, and he was most comfortable in RF. Of course, Doumit hasn't played in the outfield in a long time (and for good reason). But if Willingham is the DH there's no reason to keep Revere in RF.
  14. Everything I've heard about Buxton sounds eerily close to everything I heard about Hicks when the Twins selected him. Hopefully Buxton progresses more quickly than Hicks has.
  15. It would appear that the Twins and Astros weren't the only teams not sold on Appel. And I think the Boras angle is overblown. I've heard conflicting reports on Appel's velocity, from mid-90s to high-90s. And there was that story in the Strib last week about Appel being "too nice" to pitch inside.
  16. Yes, Moyer is 75 years old. He's actually from the Dominican and his name is Jaime Moyér.
  17. Only if Hicks never pans out.
  18. Diamond reminds me of Duensing. I'm a fan of Duensing, but I'm expecting Diamond to come to earth as a starter much like Duensing did.
  19. The Twins had other starters coming up at the time whom I would have rather traded than Garza. And as much as Gardy and Andy didn't like Garza, Delmon Young was in many ways a worse clubhouse presence and that was well known at the time. I forget which Twins FO official said it, but I know I heard that Tampa wouldn't do Garza for Young straight up and insisted the Twins include Bartlett to make the deal. If that's the case, it should have been a big red flag for Bill Smith. The Rays knew what Brendan Harris was, and obviously thought Bartlett was a much better shortstop.
  20. I think the Twins would be better off trying to trade Casilla than Carroll.
  21. I bet there will be very little interest from the Dodgers or any other team to trade for Carroll, who has another year on his deal plus a buyout for an option. I thought the Carroll deal looked bad the minute it was announced. I can't imagine any other team offering him 2 years + in his age 38 season.
  22. I disagree with that last point. It seems this writer has been studying the finer points of Jim Souhan columnry.
  23. I just see it as an outside observer looking at what happened to the Darling of MLB Twins we used to know. Not a very good title, though, because the topic brought up in the title isn't really addressed.
  24. Frequently meaning too many times for any pitcher to get away with against a strong lineup. I agree it was actually a step in the right direction in Liriano's case that he only did it six times, but that's still too many times.
  25. Is Frankie back? If by "back" you mean ready to be a consistent contributor, I'm going to say no. I was at the game. Liriano was falling behind in the count frequently, 2-0 and 3-0. He can get away with that against the feeble A's, but the good teams are going to punish him for that. One thing I did notice was that it looked like he threw his changeup more often than I'm used to seeing, which is a good sign. It's a good pitch and he's been hesitant to use it in the past.
