  1. Being ranked 7th isn't a slight, and organizational rankings should be weighted on the upper minors. Having some good prospects who are multiple years away from debuting in the majors is no guarantee of anything.
  2. I'm glad that Ryan feels confident that his team can turn the ship around, but when he says "we'll get this thing squared up" the "we" he's referring to is largely the same bunch that bungled it in the first place.
  3. I get that the Pohlads are ultimately where the buck stops, but I don't believe that they just blindly promoted Smith without consulting with their own people to find TR's replacement.
  4. This is a solid point. When TR stepped down, the organization was so focused internally that it promoted one of "their guys" to a position he couldn't handle rather than taking a look outside to find someone more qualified. I suppose it's possible they could have done worse than Smith, but I doubt it. Who was in the room when that decision was made? And why was Smith the only one to take a fall?
  5. I'd just like to know what corrective measures the Twins have taken to right the ship besides the replacement of Bill Smith with TR. From the outside, it's hard to see what else they've done, and though I'm not a Bill Smith fan, the problems ran much deeper than him.
  6. I believe it was LENIII at the time who said that Molitor wasn't a good fit because the Twins felt that having him on the staff would threaten Gardenhire's authority.
  7. I'm not arguing for the exclusion of Hrbek as much as the inclusion of Radke. If you want to judge the player by postseason success, Hrbek wins. But Radke significantly out-WARs Hrbek, so I don't believe Hrbek is a better player. If Radke was originally from Minnesota, he'd already have his number retired.
  8. Radke was at least as good of a pitcher as Hrbek was a first baseman.
  9. Regardless of how much the Twins have to spend, there's a finite number of pitchers on the market. I suspect that the Twins will try to sign a 2nd tier pitcher and add a couple more lottery tickets.
  10. 1 - agreed 2 - agreed, but it will be of the Steve Holm/Rene Rivera ilk. Return of The Son of Sal? 3 - I doubt it. My expectation is that the Twins biggest FA pitching acquisition will be Pelfrey. 4 - No chance the Twins call him up before they push back his service clock the extra year. Fans will clamor, and the Twins will remind us of what happened with Hicks. 5 - 50/50. The Twins were chattering about moving Duensing back to the rotation, which could have been smoke to try and build up some trade value, but I think any other team would realize that if Duensing was a legitimate option to start there was no one in the Twins rotation that was blocking him.
  11. No one would say that defense doesn't matter. The theme from the OP seems to be that the Twins value good defense over good pitching, because defense is cheaper to get, and a good defense will make a bad pitching staff look better. But when your pitching staff allows a ridiculous amount of balls in play, the potential increases for errors, bad plays, miscues, fielders out of position, home runs, laser line drives, and 12-hoppers through the hole. Even with a good defense, with that much contact there's going to be a bunch of plays that even the best defense couldn't make. As for Fielder... he should be the DH and Cabrera should be at first. It's weird, but I think Cabrera is a better 3B than Fielder is a 1B.
  12. I think the Twins need to look outside the organization to bring in pitchers good enough that turning Pressly into a starter is a non-topic. Pressly as a starter sounds like more of the same type of AAAA pitch-to-contact starters the Twins already have a legion of.
  13. No, the point is that good players on steriods > mediocre players on steroids. There's not enough 'roids in the world to turn Doug Mientkiewicz into Mark McGwire.
  14. I think we tend to forget that guys who don't throw 100 mph and guys who don't hit 40 home runs are just as capable of using PEDs as the ones who do.
  15. You lost me there. The Twins have had their fair share of PED users. Juan Rincon, Matt Lawton, Rondell White, JC Romero all come to mind. And those are just the ones we know about.
  16. I'd trade Doumit for whatever I could get. I get that Mauer's future as a catcher is in doubt but I honestly think that a Pinto/Herrmann combo could give the Twins at least as much offensive production as Doumit and better defense. Willingham... I'd hold on to just in case he has a good first half. The Twins' recent history of holding on to guys to see if they can reestablish some trade value doesn't make me very optimistic about it, though.
  17. They were a good, solid team that took advantage of a weak division. Before the wild card era I don't think any of those Twins teams would have made the playoffs.
  18. I used to like Torii until he made that boneheaded dive in the 2006 ALDS.
  19. At least we can take comfort in knowing that the meager WAR that free agents have given the Twins was acquired cheaply.
  20. If the Twins are expecting to see Sano and maybe Buxton some time in 2014, how is acquiring good free agents in the meantime taking a shortcut? And what about the future HOF player whose prime years are wasting away while TR is kicking the can down the road?
  21. I've heard the refrain that Gardy "gets the most from what he has", but I think that his good teams, especially the early 2000s teams, had more talent than people give them credit for, and the players were frequently underrated.
  22. Which players? Mauer and Perkins presumably will be here for a while, but who cares what Clete Thomas, Eric Fryer, Darin Mastroianni and Chris Colabello think of Gardy?
  23. Because the Twins should be aiming higher than Pelfrey.
  24. Ryan's quote about getting Gardy some better players could be just force of habit, considering how long Gardy's been here, or it could be one of those "vote of confidence/kiss of death" quotes that always comes before a major organizational firing. I get the feeling that it's neither, and the Twins country club isn't going anywhere.
  25. Duensing's role could switch next season | Star Tribune Heard Dick and Bert talking about this on the broadcast last night, and Phil Miller has quotes from Gardy and TR about Duensing moving back to the starting rotation. If a failed starter turned reliever is part of their 5-man rotation at the beginning of the year in 2014, the Twins will be in more serious trouble than I thought they already would be. In fairness, Ryan calls it a "Plan B" option, but if Duensing as a starter is Plan B, why didn't the Twins have him start at all this year? They could have used more Plan Bs.
